Disturbed energy metabolism and muscular dystrophy caused by pure creatine deficiency are reversible by creatine intake.

Creatine (Cr) plays an important role in muscle energy homeostasis by its participation in the ATP-phosphocreatine phosphoryl exchange reaction mediated by creatine kinase. Given that the consequences of Cr depletion are incompletely understood, we assessed the morphological, metabolic and functional consequences of systemic depletion on skeletal muscle in a mouse model with deficiency of l-arginine:glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT(-/-)), which catalyses the first step of Cr biosynthesis. In vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed a near-complete absence of Cr and phosphocreatine in restin

Effect of feed restriction on dynamics of feed intake, milk yield, and energy balance in dairy cows.

Due to climate change, forage shortages may become more frequent, potentially leading to underfeeding in dairy cows. Limited knowledge exists on how milk yield and energy balance evolve during and, in particular, after the underfeeding phase. This study aimed to assess the impact of 2 feed restriction durations (4 and 6 weeks) on the changes in feed intake, milk yield, and energy balance in dairy cows. A total of 42 cows were first fed ad libitum for 3 weeks and then divided into 3 groups of 14 cows. Two groups were underfed by 5 kg of DM per day for 4 or 6 weeks (R4 and R6). After the restric

Associations of sleep patterns with metabolic syndrome indices, body composition, and energy intake in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported short sleep duration is associated with greater risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS), obesity, and higher energy intake (EI). However, studies of these associations in children using objective methods are sparse. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to determine the associations for sleep patterns with MetS indices, body composition, and EI using objective measures in children. METHODS: Free-living sleep and physical activity were measured in 125 children (aged 8-17 years, BMI z = 0.57 ± 1.0, 55% female) using wrist-worn actigraphs for 14 nights. Blood pressure, fasting blood l

Coffee for morning hunger pangs. An examination of coffee and caffeine on appetite, gastric emptying, and energy intake.

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and has a number of potential health benefits. Coffee may influence energy expenditure and energy intake, which in turn may affect body weight. However, the influence of coffee and its constituents - particularly caffeine - on appetite remains largely unexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of coffee consumption (with and without caffeine) on appetite sensations, energy intake, gastric emptying, and plasma glucose between breakfast and lunch meals. In a double-blind, randomised crossover design. Particip

Food intake in free-feeding and energy-deprived lean rats is mediated by the neuropeptide Y5 receptor.

The new neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y5 receptor antagonist CGP 71683A displayed high affinity for the cloned rat NPY Y5 subtype, but > 1, 000-fold lower affinity for the cloned rat NPY Y1, Y2, and Y4 subtypes. In LMTK cells transfected with the human NPY Y5 receptor, CGP 71683A was without intrinsic activity and antagonized NPY-induced Ca2+ transients. CGP 71683A was given intraperitoneally (dose range 1-100 mg/kg) to a series of animal models of high hypothalamic NPY levels. In lean satiated rats CGP 71683A significantly antagonized the increase in food intake induced by intracerebroventricular inje

The comparison of total energy and protein intake relative to estimated requirements in chronic spinal cord injury.

In chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals experience dietary inadequacies complicated by an understudied research area. Our objectives were to assess (1) the agreement between methods of estimating energy requirement (EER) and estimated energy intake (EEI) and (2) whether dietary protein intake met SCI-specific protein guidelines. Persons with chronic SCI (n = 43) completed 3-day food records to assess EEI and dietary protein intake. EER was determined with the Long and Institute of Medicine (IOM) methods and the SCI-specific Farkas method. Protein requirements were calculated as 0·8-1·

Review on the Regional Effects of Gastrointestinal Luminal Stimulation on Appetite and Energy Intake: (Pre)clinical Observations.

Macronutrients in the gastrointestinal (GI) lumen are able to activate "intestinal brakes", feedback mechanisms on proximal GI motility and secretion including appetite and energy intake. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of the current evidence with respect to four questions: (1) are regional differences (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) present in the intestinal luminal nutrient modulation of appetite and energy intake? (2) is this "intestinal brake" effect macronutrient specific? (3) is this "intestinal brake" effect maintained during repetitive activation? (4) can the "intestinal bra

Associations between Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Total Energy, Carbohydrate, and Fat Intakes: A Systematic Review.

A better understanding of the genetic underpinning of total energy, carbohydrate, and fat intake is a prerequisite to develop personalized dietary recommendations. For this purpose, we systematically reviewed associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and total energy, carbohydrate, and fat intakes. Four databases were searched for studies that assessed an association between SNPs and total energy, carbohydrate, and fat intakes. Screening of articles and data extraction was performed independently by 2 reviewers. Articles in English or German language, published between 1994 a

An isocaloric increase of eating episodes in the morning contributes to decrease energy intake at lunch in lean men.

The effects of increasing eating frequency on human health are unclear. This study used an integrated approach to assess the short-term consequences on appetite and metabolism. Twenty normal-weight men participated in: (i) two sessions consisting of a breakfast consumed in one eating episode at T0 (F1), or in four isocaloric eating episodes at T0, T60, T120, and T180 min (F4), and followed by an ecological ad libitum buffet meal (T240) designed in an experimental restaurant. Intakes were assessed for the whole buffet meal and for each temporal quarter of the meal. (ii) two sessions consisting

Effects of dietary polyphenols on neuroregulatory factors and pathways that mediate food intake and energy regulation in obesity.

Polyphenols are natural substances and are enriched in vegetables, fruits, grains, bark, tea, and wine. Some polyphenols have insulin-potentiating and anti-inflammatory effects, both of which are important in obesity. Dietary supplementation with polyphenolic compounds is associated with reduced diet-induced obesity and/or metabolic syndrome in animal and human studies. Insights into mechanisms that regulate food intake and satiety have led to an increased understanding of obesity but the pathogenesis underlying obesity is lacking. Food intake is subject to a complex regulation by the hypothal

Impact of high energy oral nutritional supplements consumed in the late afternoon on appetite, energy intake and cardio-metabolic risk factors in females with lower BMI.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Morning consumption of a single dose of high-energy oral nutritional supplement (ONS) in females with a lower BMI displaces some of the food eaten at breakfast but increases overall daily energy intake. This study investigated the effectiveness of ONS intake in the late afternoon and for longer duration. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twenty-one healthy females (mean ± SD, age 25 ± 5 years; BMI 18.7 ± 1.2 kg/m2) participated in a randomised, crossover study with two experimental trials. In the afternoon of days 1-5, participants consumed either ONS (2.510 MJ) or low-energy PLACEBO dr

Effect of ultra-processed-rich versus ultra-processed-free preload meals at high and low energy density on ad libitum energy intake: a randomized crossover trial.

Ultraprocessed food (UPF) consumption leads to lower satiation under ad libitum conditions compared with less processed foods, with energy density (ED) proposed as a key mediator. However, studies using fixed-energy portions are needed to clarify the impact of UPF on satiety. This randomized, 2x2 crossover trial evaluated the effects of preload meals differing in processing level (0% vs. ≥80% of energy from UPF) and ED (≤1.2 vs. ≥2.0 kcal/g) on ad libitum energy intake and appetite in adults. Each intervention lasted one day and included two preload meals (breakfast and lunch). The primary out

Effects of chronic growth hormone treatment on energy intake and resting energy metabolism in patients with human immunodeficiency virus-associated wasting--a clinical research center study.

In previous studies, treatment with recombinant human GH (rhGH) produced sustained increases in weight and lean body mass (LBM) and decreases in fat mass in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated wasting. To evaluate the effects of chronic rhGH treatment on components of energy balance, we recruited separate subgroups of HIV-positive patients with an involuntary weight loss of 10% or more to undergo paired measurements of resting energy metabolism (n = 6) or food intake (n = 11) before and during the final week of a 3-month rhGH (0.1 mg/kg.day) treatment period.
