Identification of colorectal malignancies enabled by phasor-based autofluorescence lifetime macroimaging and ensemble learning.

SIGNIFICANCE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most frequent cancers and a leading contributor to cancer-associated mortality globally. CRCs are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, which leads to high mortality and morbidity. This outcome is exacerbated by high rates of recurrence and postoperative complications that contribute substantially to poor prognosis. Advancements in endoscopic assessment have improved CRC prevention, early detection, and surveillance over the years. Yet, CRC remains one of the most significant health challenges of the 21st century. Label-free optical spec

SR-TWAS: Leveraging Multiple Reference Panels to Improve TWAS Power by Ensemble Machine Learning.

Multiple reference panels of a given tissue or multiple tissues often exist, and multiple regression methods could be used for training gene expression imputation models for TWAS. To leverage expression imputation models (i.e., base models) trained with multiple reference panels, regression methods, and tissues, we develop a Stacked Regression based TWAS (SR-TWAS) tool which can obtain optimal linear combinations of base models for a given validation transcriptomic dataset. Both simulation and real studies showed that SR-TWAS improved power, due to increased effective training sample sizes and

Cough2COVID-19 detection using an enhanced multi layer ensemble deep learning framework and CoughFeatureRanker.

In response to the pressing requirement for precise and easily accessible COVID-19 detection methods, we present the Cough2COVID-19 framework, which is cost-effective, non-intrusive, and widely accessible. The conventional diagnostic methods, notably the PCR test, are encumbered by limitations such as cost and invasiveness. Consequently, the exploration of alternative solutions has gained momentum. Our innovative approach employs a multi-layer ensemble deep learning (MLEDL) framework that capitalizes on cough audio signals to achieve heightened efficiency in COVID-19 detection. This study intr

Identifying trigger cues for hospital blood transfusions based on ensemble of machine learning methods.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic shock is the leading cause of preventable death with most patients dying within the first six hours from arriving to the hospital. This underscores the importance of prehospital interventions, and growing evidence suggests prehospital transfusion improves survival. Optimizing transfusion triggers in the prehospital setting is key to improving outcomes for patients in hemorrhagic shock. Our objective was to identify factors associated with early in-hospital transfusion requirements available to prehospital clinicians in the field to develop a simple algorithm for prehospit

Selective ensemble methods for deep learning segmentation of major vessels in invasive coronary angiography.

BACKGROUND: Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is a primary imaging modality that visualizes the lumen area of coronary arteries for diagnosis and interventional guidance. In the current practice of quantitative coronary analysis (QCA), semi-automatic segmentation tools require labor-intensive and time-consuming manual correction, limiting their application in the catheterization room. PURPOSE: This study aims to propose rank-based selective ensemble methods that improve the segmentation performance and reduce morphological errors that limit fully automated quantification of coronary artery

Automatic classification of distal radius fracture using a two-stage ensemble deep learning framework.

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are one of the most common types of wrist fracture and can be subdivided into intra- and extra-articular fractures. Compared with extra-articular DRFs which spare the joint surface, intra-articular DRFs extend to the articular surface and can be more difficult to treat. Identification of articular involvement can provide valuable information about the characteristics of fracture patterns. In this study, a two-stage ensemble deep learning framework was proposed to differentiate intra- and extra-articular DRFs automatically on posteroanterior (PA) view wrist X-rays

Classification of Alzheimer's Disease Using Ensemble of Deep Neural Networks Trained Through Transfer Learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the deadliest neurodegenerative diseases ailing the elderly population all over the world. An ensemble of Deep learning (DL) models can learn highly complicated patterns from MRI scans for the detection of AD by utilizing diverse solutions. In this work, we propose a computationally efficient, DL-architecture agnostic, ensemble of deep neural networks, named 'Deep Transfer Ensemble (DTE)' trained using transfer learning for the classification of AD. DTE leverages the complementary feature views and diversity introduced by many different locally optimum soluti

Sevoflurane-induced amnesia is associated with inhibition of hippocampal cell ensemble activity after learning.

General anesthesia could induce amnesia, however the mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that suppression of neuronal ensemble activity in the hippocampus by anesthesia during the post-learning period causes retrograde amnesia. To test this hypothesis, two experiments were conducted with sevoflurane anesthesia (2.5%, 30 min): a hippocampus-dependent memory task, the context pre-exposure facilitation effect (CPFE) procedure to measure memory function and in vivo calcium imaging to observe neural activity in hippocampal CA1 during context exploration and sevoflurane/home cage session. Prediction of tau accumulation in prodromal Alzheimer's disease using an ensemble machine learning approach.

We developed machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict abnormal tau accumulation among patients with prodromal AD. We recruited 64 patients with prodromal AD using the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset. Supervised ML approaches based on the random forest (RF) and a gradient boosting machine (GBM) were used. The GBM resulted in an AUC of 0.61 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.579-0.647) with clinical data (age, sex, years of education) and a higher AUC of 0.817 (95% CI 0.804-0.830) with clinical and neuropsychological data. The highest AUC was 0.86 (95% CI 0.839-0.885)

Computer-aided diagnosis of breast ultrasound images using ensemble learning from convolutional neural networks.

Breast ultrasound and computer aided diagnosis (CAD) has been used to classify tumors into benignancy or malignancy. However, conventional CAD software has some problems (such as handcrafted features are hard to design; conventional CAD systems are difficult to confirm overfitting problems, etc.). In our study, we propose a CAD system for tumor diagnosis using an image fusion method combined with different image content representations and ensemble different CNN architectures on US images. The CNN-based method proposed in this study includes VGGNet, ResNet, and DenseNet. In our private dataset

Assessment of an ensemble of machine learning models toward abnormality detection in chest radiographs.

Respiratory diseases account for a significant proportion of deaths and disabilities across the world. Chest X-ray (CXR) analysis remains a common diagnostic imaging modality for confirming intra-thoracic cardiopulmonary abnormalities. However, there remains an acute shortage of expert radiologists, particularly in under-resourced settings, resulting in severe interpretation delays. These issues can be mitigated by a computer-aided diagnostic (CADx) system to supplement decision-making and improve throughput while preserving and possibly improving the standard-of-care. Systems reported in the

Ensemble machine learning prediction of posttraumatic stress disorder screening status after emergency room hospitalization.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in a substantial minority of emergency room admits. Inexpensive and accurate person-level assessment of PTSD risk after trauma exposure is a critical precursor to large-scale deployment of early interventions that may reduce individual suffering and societal costs. Toward this aim, we applied ensemble machine learning to predict PTSD screening status three months after severe injury using cost-effective and minimally invasive data. Participants (N = 271) were recruited at a Level 1 Trauma Center where they provided variables routinely collected at

A machine learning ensemble to predict treatment outcomes following an Internet intervention for depression.

BACKGROUND: Some Internet interventions are regarded as effective treatments for adult depression, but less is known about who responds to this form of treatment. METHOD: An elastic net and random forest were trained to predict depression symptoms and related disability after an 8-week course of an Internet intervention, Deprexis, involving adults (N = 283) from across the USA. Candidate predictors included psychopathology, demographics, treatment expectancies, treatment usage, and environmental context obtained from population databases. Model performance was evaluated using predictive R2$\l

Ensemble learning of inverse probability weights for marginal structural modeling in large observational datasets.

Inverse probability weights used to fit marginal structural models are typically estimated using logistic regression. However, a data-adaptive procedure may be able to better exploit information available in measured covariates. By combining predictions from multiple algorithms, ensemble learning offers an alternative to logistic regression modeling to further reduce bias in estimated marginal structural model parameters. We describe the application of two ensemble learning approaches to estimating stabilized weights: super learning (SL), an ensemble machine learning approach that relies on V-

Sampling Conformational Ensembles of Highly Dynamic Proteins via Generative Deep Learning.

Proteins are inherently dynamic, and their conformational ensembles play a crucial role in biological function. Large-scale motions may govern the protein structure-function relationship, and numerous transient but stable conformations of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) can play a crucial role in biological function. Investigating conformational ensembles to understand regulations and disease-related aggregations of IDPs is challenging, both experimentally and computationally. In this paper, we first introduce a deep learning-based model, termed Internal Coordinate Net (ICoN), which l

A comparative performance analysis of ensemble learning and regularized neural networks in cardiovascular risk prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Heart disease classification using small structured clinical datasets requires evaluation procedures that account for sampling variability, model-selection bias, probability calibration, and clinically relevant operating characteristics. This study presents an internally validated comparison of classical classifiers, modern tree ensembles, and regularized artificial neural networks using a cleaned Cleveland heart disease dataset containing 303 observations, 13 predictors, and a binary outcome. METHODS: Continuous variables were standardized, nominal variables were one-hot encode

Hyperspectral inversion of winter wheat nitrogen content based on feature optimization and stacking ensemble learning.

Rapid, non-destructive crop nitrogen monitoring is a core pillar of precision fertilization and mass-balance nutrient management, which requires real-time uptake data to balance fertilizer inputs, crop demand and environmental nitrogen losses. But hyperspectral data redundancy, background noise and black-box machine learning models limit inversion generalization performance and interpretability, hampering field-scale mass-balance management. Using jointing-to-filling winter wheat canopy hyperspectral data, we built a three-tier progressive framework of preprocessing, feature selection and mode

Ensemble-based high-performance deep learning models for medical image retrieval in breast cancer detection.

As digital imaging in healthcare grows quickly, dealing with vast medical image data is getting trickier. Content-Based Medical Image Retrieval (CBMIR) systems help with this, but they struggle because of the gap between simple image details and what these images mean in a clinical setting. This paper presents a new approach using deep learning for CBMIR that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and Explainable AI (XAI). Using the Breast Ultrasound Image (BUSI) dataset for training, this hybrid model classifies images and finds the relevant results b
