A Novel Biomimetic Nanosponge Protects the Retina from the Enterococcus faecalis Cytolysin.

Intraocular infections are a potentially blinding complication of common ocular surgeries and traumatic eye injuries. Bacterial toxins synthesized in the eye can damage intraocular tissue, often resulting in poor visual outcomes. Enteroccocus faecalis causes blinding infections and is responsible for 8 to 17% of postoperative endophthalmitis cases. These infections are increasingly difficult to treat due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. Virulent E. faecalis isolates secrete a pore-forming bicomponent cytolysin that contributes to retinal tissue damage during endophthalmitis. We

Enterococcus faecalis causing delayed spondylodiscitis in a case with retained intraspinal bullet.

Delayed presentations have been reported following gunshot wounds (GSW) with retained intraspinal bullets due to migration of projectile or lead intoxication. We report on the rare occurrence of delayed pyogenic spondylodiscitis and neurological dysfunction following injury from low velocity GSW to the spine with a retained projectile. A 55-year-old male presented 4 months following GSW to the abdomen which resulted in colonic injury and L5 fracture. The patient was treated initially with ileo-transverse anastomosis, antibiotics, without retrieval of the bullet. He developed low back pain, cla

Effects of Enterococcus faecalis CECT 7121 on Cryptosporidium parvum infection in mice.

Cryptosporidium is an opportunistic protozoan parasite of humans and animals worldwide and causes diarrheal disease that is typically self-limiting in immunocompetent hosts but often life threatening to immunocompromised individuals. However, there is a lack of completely efficient therapy available. Probiotics have attracted the attention as potential antiparasite compounds against protozoa involved in intestinal infections. This study investigated the effects of administration of probiotic Enterococcus faecalis CECT 7121 on Cryptosporidium parvum infection in immunosuppressed mice. Effects o

EFFECTS OF ROOT CANAL IRRIGANTS ON THE PLANKTONIC FORM OF ENTEROCOCCUS FAECALIS: A REVIEW.

BACKGROUND: Bacteria play an essential role in the initiation and perpetuation of pulpal and periapical pathoses. Enterococcus faecalis is associated with both primary and persistent endodontic infections. However, the frequency of E. faecalis in persistent periradicular lesions has been shown to be very higher than primary infections. AIM: The purpose of this paper was to review the effect of various irrigation solutions such as sodium hypochlorite, chlorhexidine, MTAD and Tetraclean against E. faecalis. METHODS: Papers used in this review were found by searching the key words (Root canal i

An ABC transporter is required for secretion of peptide sex pheromones in Enterococcus faecalis.

UNLABELLED: Enterococci are leading causes of hospital-acquired infection in the United States and continue to develop resistances to new antibiotics. Many Enterococcus faecalis isolates harbor pheromone-responsive plasmids that mediate horizontal transfer of even large blocks of chromosomal genes, resulting in hospital-adapted strains over a quarter of whose genomes consist of mobile elements. Pheromones to which the donor cells respond derive from lipoprotein signal peptides. Using a novel bacterial killing assay dependent on the presence of sex pheromones, we screened a transposon mutant li

Evaluation of the antibacterial efficacy of silver nanoparticles against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as an irrigant or medicament against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms formed on root dentin. METHODS: Dentin sections were inoculated with E. faecalis for 4 weeks to establish a standard monospecies biofilm model. These biofilms were tested in 2 stages. In stage 1, the biofilms were irrigated with 0.1% AgNP solution, 2% sodium hypochlorite, and sterile saline for 2 minutes, respectively. In stage 2, the biofilms were treated with AgNP gel (0.02% and 0.01%) and calcium hydroxide for

Enterococcus faecalis clones in poultry and in humans with urinary tract infections, Vietnam.

Enterococcus spp. as pathogens have increased, but the sources of infection often remain unclear. To investigate whether poultry might be a reservoir for E. faecalis-associated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans, we characterized E. faecalis isolates from patients in Vietnam with UTIs during January 2008-January 2010 and poultry living in close contact with them by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, analysis of antimicrobial drug susceptibility patterns, and sequencing of virulence genes. In 7 (23%) of 31 UTI cases, we detected identical MLST, indisting

First detection of the antiseptic resistance gene qacA/B in Enterococcus faecalis.

Resistance to disinfectants is well investigated in staphylococci and pseudomonads but nearly unexplored in bacteria of the genus Enterococcus, despite their rising significance as nosocomial pathogens. In this study, Enterococcus faecalis (n=585) from blood (n=42) and stool (n=109) of hospitalized humans, from faeces of farm animals (n=226), and from food (milk and dairy products, n=96; meat and meat products, n=112) were screened for the presence of qac-genes (qacA, qacB, qacC, smr [qacC+qacD], qacEΔ1, qacG, qacH, qacJ) via PCR. The isolates' susceptibility to a quaternary ammonium compound

The Enterococcus faecalis superoxide dismutase is essential for its tolerance to vancomycin and penicillin.

OBJECTIVES: Enterococcus faecalis is a human commensal that has the ability to become a pathogen. Because of its ruggedness, it can persist in the hospital setting and cause serious nosocomial infections. E. faecalis can acquire multiple drug resistance determinants but is also intrinsically tolerant to a number of antibiotics, such as penicillin or vancomycin, meaning that these usually bactericidal drugs only exhibit a bacteriostatic effect. Recently, evidence has been presented that exposure to bactericidal antibiotics induced the production of reactive oxygen species in bacteria. Here, we

Horizontal transfer of virulence genes encoded on the Enterococcus faecalis pathogenicity island.

Enterococcus faecalis, a leading cause of nosocomial antibiotic resistant infections, frequently possesses a 150 kb pathogenicity island (PAI) that carries virulence determinants. The presence of excisionase and integrase genes, conjugative functions and multiple insertion sequence elements suggests that the PAI, or segments thereof, might be capable of horizontal transfer. In this report, the transfer of the E. faecalis PAI is demonstrated and a mechanism for transfer elucidated. In filter matings, chloramphenicol resistance was observed to transfer from strain MMH594b, a clinical isolate pos

[Venous and capillary diffusion of Enterococcus faecalis during experimental bacteremia in the chicken].

Capillary and venous diffusion of bacteria were studied in chickens after intravenous inoculation with a strain of Enterococcus faecalis isolated from a case of septicaemia in a human neonate. One group of 13 chickens was inoculated with 10(8) bacteria/animal and another group of 20 chickens with 10(7) bacteria/animal. The level of bacteraemia in the first group of chickens was similar in capillary and venous blood. With 10(8) E. faecalis, the clearance of bacteria was very weak. The level of bacteraemia in the second group was significantly higher (after 180 min) in capillary than in venous b

Biological Traits and Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Novel Enterococcus faecalis Bacteriophage EFP6.

Enterococcus faecalis is a prevalent opportunistic pathogen associated with chicken embryonic and neonatal chick mortality, posing a significant challenge in poultry farming. In the current study, E. faecalis strain EF6, isolated from a recent hatchery outbreak, served as the host bacterium for the isolation of a novel phage EFP6, capable of lysing E. faecalis. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a hexagonal head and a short tail, classifying EFP6 as a member of the Autographiviridae family. EFP6 showed sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and resistance to chloroform. The lytic cycle du

Genotypic and phenotypic characterization of Enterococcus faecalis isolates from periprosthetic joint infections.

UNLABELLED: Over 2.5 million prosthetic joint implantation surgeries occur annually in the United States. Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), though occurring in only 1-2% of patients receiving replacement joints, are challenging to diagnose and treat and are associated with significant morbidity. The Gram-positive bacterium Enterococcus faecalis, which can be highly antibiotic-resistant and is a robust biofilm producer on indwelling medical devices, accounts for 2-11% of PJIs. E. faecalis PJIs are understudied compared to those caused by other pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Thi

Profiling Antibiotic Susceptibility among Distinct Enterococcus faecalis Isolates from Dental Root Canals.

Enterococcus faecalis, a leading multi-resistant nosocomial pathogen, is also the most frequently retrieved species from persistently infected dental root canals, suggesting that the oral cavity is a possible reservoir for resistant strains. However, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for oral enterococci remains scarce. Here, we examined the AST profiles of 37 E. faecalis strains, including thirty-four endodontic isolates, two vanA-type vancomycin-resistant isolates, and the reference strain ATCC-29212. Using Etest gradient strips and established EUCAST standards, we determined minimu
