Measuring network's entropy in ADHD: a new approach to investigate neuropsychiatric disorders.

The application of graph analysis methods to the topological organization of brain connectivity has been a useful tool in the characterization of brain related disorders. However, the availability of tools, which enable researchers to investigate functional brain networks, is still a major challenge. Most of the studies evaluating brain images are based on centrality and segregation measurements of complex networks. In this study, we applied the concept of graph spectral entropy (GSE) to quantify the complexity in the organization of brain networks. In addition, to enhance interpretability, we

Measures of angular spread and entropy for the detection of architectural distortion in prior mammograms.

PURPOSE: Architectural distortion is an important sign of early breast cancer. We present methods for computer-aided detection of architectural distortion in mammograms acquired prior to the diagnosis of breast cancer in the interval between scheduled screening sessions. METHODS: Potential sites of architectural distortion were detected using node maps obtained through the application of a bank of Gabor filters and linear phase portrait modeling. A total of 4,224 regions of interest (ROIs) were automatically obtained from 106 prior mammograms of 56 interval-cancer cases, including 301 true-po

Assessing aortic stenosis using sample entropy of the phonocardiographic signal in dogs.

In aortic valve stenosis (AS), heart murmurs arise as an effect of turbulent blood flow distal to the obstructed valves. With increasing AS severity, the flow becomes more unstable, and the ensuing murmur becomes more complex. We hypothesize that these hemodynamic flow changes can be quantified based on the complexity of the phonocardiographic (PCG) signal. In this study, sample entropy (SampEn) was investigated as a measure of complexity using a dog model. Twenty-seven boxer dogs with various degrees of AS were examined with Doppler echocardiography, and the peak aortic flow velocity ( V(max)

Approximate entropy of self-reported mood prior to episodes in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Approximate entropy (ApEn) measures regularity in time series data, while traditional linear statistics measure variability. Using self-reported mood data from patients with bipolar disorder, this preliminary study addressed whether ApEn could distinguish (i) the 60 days prior to the start of a manic or depressed episode from the 60 days prior to a month of euthymia, and (ii) the 60 days prior to a manic episode from the 60 days prior to a depressed episode. METHODS: Self-reported mood data from 49 outpatients with bipolar disorder receiving standard treatment were analysed. The d

Effects of trifluoperazine on calcium binding by calmodulin. Heat capacity and entropy changes.

The possible structural changes of the calmodulin-trifluoperazine (TFP) complex caused by Ca2+ binding have been analyzed by microcalorimetric titrations. Titrations of calmodulin with Ca2+ in the presence of 8-fold molar excess TFP have been made both in the absence and presence of Mg2+, at pH 7.0, and at 5, 15, and 25 degrees C. At high concentrations of TFP calmodulin forms a complex with TFP even in the absence of Ca2+. The reaction of the calmodulin-TFP complex with Ca2+ is exothermic, both in the presence and absence of Mg2+. In the presence of Mg2+ the reaction is driven almost entirely

Topological descriptors, entropy measures, and graph energy modeling in U-carbon allotropes.

The ability of carbon to adopt multiple hybridization states gives rise to a variety of allotropes with diverse electronic behaviors, including insulating, metallic, and potentially magnetic phases. Although metallic and magnetic structures have been explored, intrinsically ferromagnetic crystalline carbon allotropes remain rare. U-Carbon (UC), a recently synthesized crystalline allotrope with mixed sp2-sp3 hybridization, exhibits dynamic stability and intrinsic ferromagnetism under ambient conditions, highlighting its potential for next-generation materials. The aim of this study is to charac

Cooperative Multimetal Chemistry Enables Precision Synthesis of High-Entropy Oxide Nanocrystal Catalysts.

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) offer vast compositional design space for discovering emergent functionalities, yet their controlled nanoscale synthesis remains challenging. Here, we develop a generalizable colloidal strategy that enables precision synthesis of HEO nanocrystals with compositions spanning quinary to septenary systems. Mechanistic studies reveal that differences in precursor reactivity drive a multistage growth pathway and that cooperative multimetal chemistry─where one metal initiates single-phase nucleation and a vacancy-forming metal promotes cation redistribution during growth─en

Decomposed Transfer Entropy for EEG Brain Networks: Parkinson's Disease and Dopaminergic Modulation.

Clarifying the mechanisms of altered brain network communication in Parkinson's disease is crucial, yet conventional connectivity measures do not distinguish whether directed information flow is driven by phase synchrony or spectral amplitude modulation. To address this, we introduce Decomposed Transfer Entropy (DTE), which represents directed information flow as a mechanistic profile comprising phase, spectral, and interaction components. Simulations indicate that DTE identifies distinct coupling types and remains robust under noise; we further benchmark DTE against representative baseline me

Unveiling Swift Heavy Ion Track Morphology in Sr-Based High-Entropy Perovskites.

The incorporation of multiple cations on a single lattice site in the high-entropy oxides is considered the key driving factor for modifying the known atomic-level response to energetic ion irradiation due to the presence of structural disorder; however, these effects are not well-understood yet. In this work, we present atomic-level insight into irradiation-induced nanoscale phase transformations in a perovskite-structured high-entropy oxide, Sr(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3 (Sr(HE)O3), subjected to 774 MeV swift Xe heavy ions, where damage is dominated by inelastic ion-lattice interactions. Entropy-mediated solidification stabilizes and enhances energetic release in amorphous energetic materials.

The formation of stable amorphous phases in rigid organic small molecules is fundamentally hindered by their pronounced crystallization tendency. This challenge is particularly acute in energetic materials, in which the amorphous phase must be stabilized without inert additives to preserve high energy density. Here, we overcome this longstanding obstacle by realising a stable amorphous energetic material based on the small molecule explosive (4,4',5,5'-tetranitro-1H,1'H-2,2'-biimidazole-1,1'-diamine, DATNBI). The amorphous DATNBI (AEM-DATNBI) prepared via a melt quenching process, exhibits a g

Tailored Bond Heterogeneity through High-Entropy Doping for Efficient Acidic Water Oxidation.

Ru-based catalysts are promising alternatives to Ir for the oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, yet their practical deployment is hindered by rapid dissolution in acidic environments. Conventional elemental doping microscopically improves stability through localized Ru-O-dopant interactions but fails to stabilize undoped regions, while high-entropy materials provide macroscopic structural robustness at the cost of active-site dilution. Here, we introduce a high-entropy doping (HED) strategy that integrates multiple foreign elements at the atomic dopant lev

Quantifying heartbeat micro-fragmentations post-myocardial infarction using wavelet entropy and complexity.

Wavelet-based entropy and statistical complexity can quantify subtle alterations in the multiscale organization of ventricular depolarization that are not necessarily apparent during standard electrocardiographic inspection. This study evaluates the transferability, robustness, and methodological sensitivity of these descriptors in a large two-database post-myocardial-infarction setting. We analyzed 12-lead ECG records from the PTB Diagnostic Electrocardiogram Database and PTB-XL. A predefined analysis cohort contained 5,887 control (CTRL), 118 early/healing post-infarction (MI7), and 294 heal

Synthesis of High-Entropy Alloy Nanomaterials for Electrocatalytic Multi-Electron Transfer Reactions.

Electrocatalytic multielectron transfer reactions are essential for clean energy conversion and the synthesis of value-added chemicals, yet their practical development is limited by the low selectivity, insufficient stability, and high cost of conventional catalysts. High-entropy alloys (HEAs), particularly in nanoscale forms, have emerged as a promising catalyst platform because their diverse local atomic environments, tunable electronic structures, and enhanced structural stability enable flexible regulation of complex reaction pathways. This review highlights the fundamental features, devel

Blood-brain barrier integrity and brain entropy in reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Elucidating functional brain dynamics under different blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeabilities may resolve the enigmatic pathophysiology of reversible cerebral vasoconstriction (RCVS); however, relevant investigations are lacking. We aimed determine the relationship between brain functional dynamics and BBB permeability in patients with RCVS. METHODS: We prospectively recruited RCVS patients and healthy controls (HCs) from November 2016 to January 2023 in Headache Center in a tertiary medical center (> 3000 beds) and adjacent communities. Consistent Brain Entropy Changes During Rumination Across Three Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners.

Rumination, characterized by repetitive and self-referential thinking, is closely linked to depression and a broad range of psychiatric disorders. However, previous research has predominantly relied on task activation or network-level approaches, leaving critical gaps in our understanding of local brain activity dynamics during ruminative states. To address this, we employed brain entropy (BEN), a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based neuroimaging measure, to quantify the temporal irregularity and complexity of local brain activity during rumination. We analyzed a publicly a

Nearest neighbor permutation entropy detects phase transitions in complex high-pressure systems.

Understanding the high-pressure phase behavior of carbon dioxide-hydrocarbon mixtures is of considerable interest owing to their wide range of applications. Under certain conditions, these systems are not amenable to direct visual monitoring, and experimentalists often rely on spectrophotometric data to infer phase behavior. Consequently, developing computationally efficient and robust methods to leverage such data is crucial. Here, we combine nearest neighbor permutation entropy, computed directly from in situ near-infrared absorbance spectra acquired during depressurization trials of mixture

Modified multiscale Renyi distribution entropy for short-term heart rate variability analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiscale sample entropy (MSE) is a prevalent complexity metric to characterize a time series and has been extensively applied to the physiological signal analysis. However, for a short-term time series, the likelihood of identifying comparable subsequences decreases, leading to higher variability in the Sample Entropy (SampEn) calculation. Additionally, as the scale factor increases in the MSE calculation, the coarse-graining process further shortens the time series. Consequently, each newly generated time series at a larger scale consists of fewer data points, potentially result

ADHD Symptoms Increase Perception of Classroom Entropy and Impact Teacher Stress Levels.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder among school-age children, characterized by persistent behavioral patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. These behaviors can create stress for teachers and negatively affect teacher-student interactions. This study hypothesized that a high frequency of ADHD students in the classroom can increase internal and external entropy, ultimately resulting in a negative stress impact on teachers. The physical concept of entropy, which measures the degree of disorder in a system, was used to better un
