Review: myogenic and muscle toxicity targets of environmental methylmercury exposure.

A number of environmental toxicants are noted for their activity that leads to declined motor function. However, the role of muscle as a proximal toxicity target organ for environmental agents has received considerably less attention than the toxicity targets in the nervous system. Nonetheless, the effects of conventional neurotoxicants on processes of myogenesis and muscle maintenance are beginning to resolve a concerted role of muscle as a susceptible toxicity target. A large body of evidence from epidemiological, animal, and in vitro studies has established that methylmercury (MeHg) is a po

Delayed exposure to environmental enrichment improves functional outcome after stroke.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disabilities worldwide. Although exposure to an enriched environment (EE) initiated in the acute phase after stroke has neuroprotective effects and improves stroke outcome, it remains unclear whether EE has positive effects when started in a delayed time frame. Here we show that exposure to EE in the delayed phase notably ameliorates the ischemia-induced impairments in neurological functions and spatial learning and memory. In addition, delayed EE exposure after stroke significantly promotes the survival and neuronal fate choice of hippocampal n

Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) Project.

PURPOSE: The Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) Project is a mother-child pregnancy and birth cohort originally initiated in the mid-1990s to explore: (1) whether enhanced mobilisation of lead from maternal bone stores during pregnancy poses a risk to fetal and subsequent offspring neurodevelopment; and (2) whether maternal calcium supplementation during pregnancy and lactation can suppress bone lead mobilisation and mitigate the adverse effects of lead exposure on offspring health and development. Through utilisation of carefully archived biospecimens to measur

[Environmental Chemical Exposure and Its Effects on Infants' Reproductive Hormones].

In recent years, the birthrate has been continuously declining in Japan. The main causes of the decline are social factors. On the other hand, there is increasing evidence that many environmental chemicals show endocrine disrupting properties. Thus, we hypothesized that exposure to these chemicals would also be a causal for the fertility crisis. In this review, we examined current evidence that focused on environmental chemical exposure in utero and its association with reproductive hormones in children. We have included the findings from a prospective birth cohorts, the Hokkaido Study on Envi

Environmental cadmium exposure, adverse effects and preventive measures in Japan.

In Japan the most heavily cadmium (Cd)-polluted region is the Jinzu river basin, where Itai-itai disease is endemic and the Kakehashi river basin is the second most polluted region.. The village average Cd concentrations in rice were distributed in the range between 0.02 microg/g and 1.06 microg/g in the Jinzu river basin and 0.11 microg g and 0.67 microg g in the Kakehashi river basin. Severe renal damage has occurred widely in the Jinzu river basin. Even after Cd exposure had ceased, renal dysfunction became worse. Dose-response relationships between Cd exposure and health effects were clear

Exposure to environmental chemicals relevant for respiratory hypersensitivity: global aspects.

Trends of air pollutant concentrations that influence the incidence of respiratory diseases and might be influential for respiratory hypersensitivity are presented and discussed. Data for these trends are collected in UNEP/WHO's Global Environmental Monitoring System GEMS/Air which recently has been revitalized and redirected to become a tool for providing the information necessary for rational air quality management. Data are interpreted with respect to WHO's most recent air quality guidelines, which are an update of the air quality guidelines for Europe published in 1987. A WHO study on the

Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke measured by cotinine 125I-radioimmunoassay.

We describe a polyclonal-antiserum-based 125I-radioimmunoassay for cotinine that is suitable for measuring nonsmokers' passive exposure to tobacco smoke in the environment. The standard curve ranged from 0.25 to 12.0 micrograms/L, with an estimated lower limit of sensitivity of 0.2 microgram/L (95% B/Bo = 0.2 microgram/L; 50% B/Bo = 4.0 micrograms/L). The median within-assay CVs for patients' samples with cotinine values from 0.4 to 1.3, 1.4 to 2.4, 2.5 to 4.6, and 4.7 to 15.6 micrograms/L were 13.9%, 7.2%, 5.1%, and 5.7%, respectively. Between-assay CVs for two quality-control sera with avera

Tire-Derived Microplastics as Chemically Complex Environmental Contaminants: Mechanistic Pathways, Exposure Gradients, and Implications for Environmental Health.

Tire-derived microplastics (TWPs) are now recognized as one of the largest and most persistent sources of environmental micro- and nanoplastic pollution, yet their implications for human health remain incompletely characterized. TWPs contain complex mixtures of synthetic polymers, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, antioxidants, and transformation products such as 6PPD-quinone. These constituents exhibit chemical reactivity and biological activity relevant to oxidative stress, endothelial injury, inflammation, immune perturbation, and metabolic disruption-processes increas

Environmental determinants of health: Measuring multiple physical environmental exposures at the United States census tract level.

Physical environment plays a key role in determining human health risks. Exposure to toxins, weather extremes, degraded air and water quality, high levels of noise and limited accessibility to green areas can negatively affect health. Furthermore, adverse environmental exposures are often correlated with each other and with socioeconomic status, thereby compounding disadvantages in marginalized populations. Moreover, despite their importance in determining human health risks, the role of multiple environmental exposures is not well studied, and only a few resources contain aggregate environmen

Environmental PAH exposure and male idiopathic infertility: a review on early life exposures and adult diagnosis.

The male reproductive system is acutely and uniquely sensitive to a variety of toxicities, including those induced by environmental pollutants throughout the lifespan. Early life hormonal and morphological development results in several especially sensitive critical windows of toxicity risk associated with lifelong decreased reproductive health and fitness. Male factor infertility can account for over 40% of infertility in couples seeking treatment, and 44% of infertile men are diagnosed with idiopathic male infertility. Human environmental exposures are poorly understood due to limited availa

Exposure to environmental chemicals among Korean adults-updates from the second Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2012-2014).

National biomonitoring program can offer solid scientific evidence on exposure profiles of environmental chemicals at a national level, and provide a snapshot of changing exposure level over time. Therefore, several countries have maintained such programs for developing environmental health policies. The Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) was designed to understand the level of human exposure to environmental chemicals by time and location, and to identify possible sources of such exposure. The 2nd stage of KoNEHS, which was conducted between 2012 and 2014, examined a total o

Infantile Botulism in the Absence of Dietary Exposure to Honey: A Case Likely Related to Environmental Spore Exposure.

Infantile botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening neuroparalytic condition caused by botulinum toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum colonizing the infant's gastrointestinal tract. Early manifestations are often subtle and nonspecific, frequently leading to delayed or missed diagnosis. We report a case of a four-week-old infant who developed progressive hypotonia and respiratory compromise secondary to infantile botulism. The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of botulinum toxin in the stool, and the patient was treated promptly with botulism immune globulin. This case highligh

Effects from environmental Mn exposures: a review of the evidence from non-occupational exposure studies.

OBJECTIVE: The risk posed to human health by environmental manganese exposure is unknown. Occupational-exposure outcomes may not extrapolate to environmental exposures due to the healthy worker effect and differences in dosage parameters which may affect the biological response. This paper attempts to combine the existing literature on non-occupational Mn exposures with results from our current study in SW Quebec on environmental Mn exposure (Mergler et al., this issue) within the framework of a biologically-based, dose-response (BBDR) model. BBDR MODEL: The basic BBDR model consists of seven

Environmental Exposures, Chronic Sinusitis, and Olfaction in People With Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Environmental air pollutants may contribute to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), but their relationship with upper airway disease in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) remains poorly understood. This study evaluated associations between long-term ambient air pollutant exposure and CRS severity and olfactory dysfunction in adults with CF and CRS. METHODS: 80 adults with CF and comorbid CRS were prospectively enrolled from 2019 to 2023 at multiple U.S. academic rhinology centers. Long-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, NO2, and ozone was estimated using the nearest U.S. Environmental

Embryonic exposure to environmental levels of roundup affects neurodevelopment in zebrafish.

N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine (glyphosate) is the most sprayed herbicidal chemical in the world. Although glyphosate is considered safe in humans and higher animals due to its targeting of the shikimate pathway found only in plants and microorganisms, recent in vivo and in vitro studies show evidence of toxicity across a range of systems, including the vertebrate brain. Given that developing brains with immature blood-brain barriers can be especially sensitive to environmental contaminants, here we test the effects of embryonic exposure to environmental levels of glyphosate or its commercial form
