Navigating the Alphabet Soup of Labroligamentous Pathology of the Shoulder.

Because of the widespread use of eponyms and acronyms to describe labroligamentous findings in the shoulder, interpreting shoulder magnetic resonance imaging reports can be challenging. A summary of the appearance of these lesions on shoulder magnetic resonance images can help the orthopedic surgeon to understand these entities as imaging findings and to determine the appropriate treatment for patients with shoulder injuries.

The Popeye sign: beyond the bulge-a proposal for a standardized definition and classification.

The Popeye sign is a classic eponym describing the cosmetic deformity following long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) retraction. While frequently cited, its diagnosis remains subjective and standardized criteria are lacking. Muscle mass, body mass index, and surgical treatment of LHBT pathology as well as patient perceptions can all influence the prevalence and functional effect of the Popeye sign. This article reviews the historical origin of the eponym and its clinical relevance. Furthermore, we propose a novel, standardized diagnostic grading system to quantify the Popeye sign, facilitatin

Taking a Strohl Through History: Putting Strohl Back in Guillain-Barré-Strohl Syndrome.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a popular eponym that comes from a 1916 paper by Drs. Guillain, Barré, and Strohl. These physicians described two soldiers in the French Sixth Army during World War I who developed acute progressive motor weakness. Although Drs. Guillain and Barré have continued to be included in the syndrome's eponym, Dr. Strohl has been forgotten despite having strongly contributed to the original paper. The reasons previously mentioned for Dr. Strohl's absence appear trivial in contemporary practice and thus, his name deserves to be reintroduced to Guillain-Barré-Strohl Syndrome.

Valvular system of the lacrimal drainage pathway and the valve of Rosenmüller.

The valves of the lacrimal drainage system are an enigma with a rich eponymous history. The unidirectional flow of tears along with the ultrastructural demonstration of distinctive mucosal folds on the luminal surface has rekindled an interest in them. The first in vivo direct demonstration of the valve of Rosenmüller and its functions has laid to rest some of the controversies of its existence and that of the valve of Huschke. The dynamic assessment of the valve of Rosenmüller has shown a well-defined functional role in the facilitation of unidirectional tear flow. The present mini review des

Jan (Johann, Johannes) Mikulicz-Radecki's cancer surgery in Krakow times.

Jan (Johann) Mikulicz-Radecki (1850-1905) was one of the most illustrious surgeons in the history of medicine, and eponyms in modern medicine bearing his name are still numerous. In this paper we present only a small part of his achievements, focusing on oncological aspects and narrowing our investigation to the period of 1882-1887, when Mikulicz was a professor in the Medical Faculty of Jagiellonian University, in Krakow.

Chronic facial pain: a clinical approach.

Facial pain is a common presenting complaint requiring patience and diagnostic acumen. The proliferation of eponyms attached to various syndromes complicates the subject. The most frequent cause of pain is likely to be muscle spasm in masticatory or temporalis muscles. This article presents a rank order for the common causes of facial pain that present diagnostic difficulty, such as temporomandibular joint pain, trigeminal neuralgia, giant cell arteritis, and post-herpetic neuralgia.

Syndrome--a changing concept.

Syndrome is one of the oldest terms in the medical vocabulary. Traditionally, the term has been used mainly as a designation for complex medical entities, such as multiple abnormalities, that are characterized by clusters of concurring symptoms, usually three or more. During the mid-twentieth century, the meaning and the use of the term were altered. First to take place was an attempt to eliminate physicians' names from syndrome nomenclature, resulting in a significant increase in the use of descriptive designations in proportion to eponyms. But the trend was counterbalanced by the creation of

The du Bois sign.

According to the current literature, the term "du Bois sign" characterizes the condition of a shortened fifth finger as a symptom of congenital syphilis, Down syndrome, dyscrania, and encephalic malformation. Modern medical dictionaries and text books attribute the eponym to the French gynecologist Paul Dubois (1795-1871). Yet, a literature analysis revealed incorrect references to the person and unclear definitions of the term. Our findings showed that the origin of the term is based on observations made by the Swiss dermatologist Charles du Bois (1874-1947) in connection with congenital syph

Meige syndrome: what's in a name?

Frequently, blepharospasm is associated with involuntary movements of the platysma, lower face and masticatory muscles. Similarly, masticatory dystonia may occur in isolation or in combination with dystonia of other cranial and cervical muscles. The non-possessive and possessive forms of Meige and Brueghel syndromes have been variably and imprecisely ascribed to various anatomical variations of craniocervical dystonia. Herein, the origin of eponymic terms as applied to craniocervical dystonia is reviewed as support for proposed elimination of these eponyms from clinical usage. Although the ter

[Meige's syndrome or segmental craniocervical dystonia: terminology, history and contemporary view].

The term "Meige's syndrome" or "Breughel's syndrome" is used by specialists for the description of blepharospasm with the involuntary movements in the lower part of the face and/or masseter muscle. These eponyms "Meige's syndrome" and "Breughel's syndrome" make some mess in the terminology. The term "segmental craniocervical dystonia" joins different blepharospam-plus phenotypes and reflects contemporary perceptions about its genetic and pathophysiological community. Botulinotherapy is in fact the only way of symptomathic treatment of craniocervical dystonias.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDSs) were originally described by Ehlers in Denmark and Danlos in Paris in 1898 and 1908, respectively. They had both published individual case studies in which the common factor was laxity of ligaments leading to joint hypermobility and hyperextensibility of the skin. The choice of the name of this eponymous disease had been made by Dr Parkes Weber, an eminent London physician in the 1930s, who had a penchant for eponymous diseases, having had no less than seven attributed to himself, at least in part. Unfortunately, this was before the age of a computerised lite

Eugène Apert and his contributions to plastic surgery.

French pediatrician Eugène Apert is best known for his 1906 description of the eponymous Apert Syndrome: the widely recognized congenital condition that is known as acrocephalosyndactyly, which is characterized by distinct craniofacial deformities and bilateral syndactyly of the hands and feet. Subsequent efforts to study and treat this condition have led to contributions from numerous medical and surgical specialties under the guidance of plastic surgery. Apert's influence on medicine, however, extends far beyond what can be appreciated by the impact of his eponymous syndrome. Considered one

The Nomenclature of Chiari Malformations.

The current nomenclature of Chiari malformations includes the standard designations, Chiari 1-4, which were described by Hans Chiari in the late nineteenth century, and more recent additions, Chiari 0, 0.5, and 1.5, which emerged when the standard nomenclature failed to include important anatomical variations. The authors describe these entities and propose that to best optimize clinical care and research, it would be wise to place less focus on the eponyms and more effort on developing a descriptive or pathophysiological nomenclature.

History Page: Leaders in MSK Radiology.

Robert Kienböck (1871-1953) may be regarded as one of the first musculoskeletal radiologists who began his clinical and scientific work 2 years after the discovery of X-rays. He lent his name to Kienböck's disease, a traumatic malacia and osteonecrosis of the lunate, and to several other eponyms of diseases, devices, and parameters in radiology and radiation oncology. With his meticulous analysis of radiographic images of the highest quality, he anticipated many theories that were proposed in later decades.
