Celiac Disease Course of Eritrean Asylum-Seeker Children Living in Israel Compared to Native Israeli Children.

AIM: The adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD) in celiac disease (CD) is influenced by socioeconomic factors and language barriers, which are especially relevant to minority populations. The study aimed to compare CD outcomes in children of Eritrean asylum seekers living in Israel to those of native Israeli children. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included demographic, clinical, laboratory, endoscopic, and histologic data of all Eritrean children diagnosed with CD during 2015-2023. For each Eritrean child, 5 consecutive Israeli children served as controls. RESULTS: The study

Knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and stigma related to latent tuberculosis infection: a qualitative study among Eritreans in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Tailored and culturally appropriate latent tuberculosis (TB) infection screening and treatment programs, including interventions against TB stigma, are needed to reduce TB incidence in low TB incidence countries. However, we lack insights in stigma related to latent TB infection (LTBI) among target groups, such as asylum seekers and refugees. We therefore studied knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and stigma associated with LTBI among Eritrean asylum seekers and refugees in the Netherlands. METHODS: We used convenience sampling to interview adult Eritrean asylum seekers and refugees:

Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis: playing hide-and-seek with an elusive parasite.

A 27-year-old man of Eritrean origin presented with persistent left-sided abdominal pain. Initial investigation showed signs of liver fibrosis, portal hypertension and splenomegaly. A diagnosis of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis was suspected on grounds of elevated total IgE, grey area antischistosomiasis antibodies and the high endemic status of his native country. However, repeated microscopy of faecal and urine samples, as well as rectal biopsies, failed to demonstrate schistosomal eggs. Finally, the diagnosis of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis was established through demonstration of a Schisto

Chronic anorexia and weight loss due to extensive fibroid compression of the bowel: an unusual complication of uterine fibroids in a patient with a twin pregnancy.

A 36-year-old homeless Eritrean nulliparous woman was admitted to hospital, with abdominal pain, nausea and loss of appetite. She was found to be 17 weeks pregnant with dichorionic diamniotic twins. She was cachectic and had large palpable uterine fibroids. An extensive search for infection and malignancy did not yield any significant results. She was managed with enteral nutritional support and delivered healthy twins by emergency caesarean section at 36 weeks' gestation. She re-presented 19 days postpartum, with fever and abdominal pain. Imaging revealed multiple abdominal collections and la

IgE and Eosinophilia in Newly Arrived Refugees in Denmark: A Cross-Sectional Study of Prevalence and Clinical Management in Primary Care.

Refugees have different disease patterns than the population in receiving countries. Furthermore, refugees face barriers to accessing health care services and treatment. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of eosinophilia and elevated IgE levels in refugees and assess the clinical follow-up. Using a cross-sectional study design, we offered health assessments, including eosinophil count and IgE level measurements, to all newly arrived refugees in a Danish municipality from January 2016 to November 2018. In a subgroup, we assessed the clinical follow-up. The study population

Severe coinfection of dengue and malaria: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In countries like Sudan, where several infectious diseases are prevalent, health care providers should not be satisfied with initial detection of a single pathogen and whenever it is feasible, they should investigate coinfections. Infections with high mortality or severe morbidity should be prioritized during the differential diagnosis particularly for diseases with similar clinical manifestations to reduce the death and disability rates. However, this requires substantial improvement in the diagnostic capacity. ABSTRACT: Here we report a case of dengue and malaria coinf

Imported malaria in Switzerland, (1990-2019): A retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening, mosquito-borne parasitic disease, caused by Plasmodium spp. It is a major public health issue. Malaria in Switzerland is primarily "imported" by infected international travellers, migrants, and asylum-seekers. METHOD: We investigated the epidemiology and characteristics of imported malaria in Switzerland in the period between 1990 and 2019 using data from the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). We also obtained traveller statistics from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). RESULTS: During the last thirty years a total of 8'439 malaria ca

China's COVID-19 aid in Africa: trends and implications for future pandemic preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Chronic underfunding of pandemic preparedness remains a critical weakness in global health security. Without sustained, strategic investment, the world risks repeating the reactive approaches of past crises. This study examines the modes of COVID-19 aid delivered by the Chinese government across African countries and regions, offering a nuanced understanding of China's operational role in pandemic response. In doing so, it contributes to the global health assistance literature by providing a more comprehensive view of China's involvement in the prevention, treatment, and control of

Use of vaccination in a large outbreak of primary varicella in a detention setting for African immigrants.

BACKGROUND: Primary varicella (PV) presents a public health risk for adults in closed residential settings, especially for immigrants from tropical areas where infection during childhood is less likely. METHODS: In this study, an outbreak of PV at a detention facility for illegal immigrants from Eritrea and Sudan in southern Israel is described. Basic demographic information and clinical course for all cases were obtained. RESULTS: One hundred and nine cases of PV, all in young adult men aged 18-40 years, were diagnosed over a 7-month period (June to December 2012). Diagnosed patients were p

Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases in Young Adults Aged 20-24 Years, from 1990-2021: An Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading global health threat, with young adults (aged 20-24 years) increasingly affected, despite a historical research focus on older populations. This study investigates global, regional, and national CVD burden trends in this age group from 1990 to 2021 using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. METHODS: Age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), incidence rate (ASIR), death rate (ASDR), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were analyzed for CVDs in those aged 20-24 years. Trends were stratified by sex, region, and sociodemographi

Violence against women and sexual reproductive health service use among Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia: a latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Violence against women (VAW) is a manifestation of power relations. One in three women experience physical or sexual violence at least once globally. This concern poses a substantial barrier to accomplishing target 5.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to eliminate all forms of VAW. This escalates in humanitarian crises settings. Despite the importance there is a dearth of evidence about VAW in refugee settings in Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted between March and August 2023 in Asayta, Ethiopia. The study population consisted of

Case Report: Delayed Diagnosis of Congenital Malaria by Plasmodium vivax in a Newborn of an Eritrean Woman with Varicella Infection.

Congenital malaria (CM) is uncommon in both malaria-endemic and non-endemic countries. It may be caused by any Plasmodium spp., although Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax are the more frequent etiologic agents. We report a case of delayed diagnosis of CM by P. vivax in a newborn of an Eritrean primigravida. The mother developed pregnancy-related immunodepression and varicella-zoster viral infection 9 days before natural delivery; therefore, the child was admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to administer specific varicella-zoster immunoglobulin prophylaxis and for clini
