STUDY QUESTION: How has the interface between genetics and assisted reproduction technology (ART) evolved since 2005?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The interface between ART and genetics has become more entwined as we increase our understanding about the genetics of infertility and we are able to perform more comprehensive genetic testing.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In March 2005, a group of experts from the European Society of Human Genetics and European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology met to discuss the interface between genetics and ART and published an extended background paper, recommendatio

Autism research depends on the participation of autistic children and adults as well as their families, but researchers have not routinely involved autistic people in the planning or execution of research. Community-engaged research practices, standard in other fields such as areas of public health, are gaining acceptance in autism research, although some researchers and other stakeholders remain concerned about their appropriateness, feasibility, or utility. This study, part of a larger project on stakeholder views on the ethics of community engagement practices in autism research, examines r

Ethics education in biomedical research in India is frequently limited to regulatory compliance, with inadequate emphasis on ethical reasoning, contextual vulnerability, and deliberative review processes. As part of the Silver Jubilee of the Institutional Ethics Committee of St John's Medical College Hospital, a one-day preconference workshop titled "Responsible Researchers and Reviewers: Ethics of Good Clinical Practice" was conducted during the 13th International Conference of Ethics Education. The workshop employed case-based, interdisciplinary discussions focusing on vulnerability, ethics

BACKGROUND: Research involving terminally ill patients presents unique ethical challenges due to vulnerability, fluctuating consent capacity, and risk of undue influence. In Nigeria, cultural norms, religious beliefs, and family dynamics further shape ethical engagement, but empirical evidence regarding physicians' perspectives remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: Exploring physicians' ethical perspectives regarding the involvement of terminally ill patients in research by focusing on consent practices, safeguards, and culturally sensitive approaches to participation.
METHODS: A qualitative descript

We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional analysis of ethical principles and practices in forty-one published research papers with empirical data on HIV prevalence, incidence, or risk factors in humanitarian settings. We identified ten key concepts pertinent to ethical principles and applications, and presented recommendations to inform future HIV prevention research.

HIV phylogenetics is a powerful tool for elucidating HIV transmission dynamics, but ethical concerns have been raised about its use. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey among HIV professional stakeholders in Uganda to explore their knowledge of HIV phylogenetics and associated ethical considerations. Thirty-two participants completed the survey. 87% correctly defined HIV phylogenetics, but some were unable to recognize potential individual harms associated with HIV phylogenetic research (HPR). The most common individual and societal harms of HPR recognized were identification as an HI

Since 1979, The Belmont Report has served as a guidebook for ensuring that basic standards for ethical research are upheld. The Belmont Report calls for special protections of vulnerable research participants, such as people who are incarcerated and economically and educationally disadvantaged individuals who are deemed susceptible to exploitation. With a growing focus on health equity and community-engaged approaches in health equity research, efforts to involve vulnerable participants are increasing. Yet there is little understanding of what matters most to vulnerable populations. This study

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid fractures treated non-operatively and operatively may be complicated by nonunion.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to test the primary hypothesis that the incidence density of scaphoid fracture treatment is higher than previously estimated, to determine the frequency and risk factors for nonunion treatment, and to determine whether the frequency of surgical treatment increased over time.
METHODS: The MarketScan® database was queried for all records of treatment (casting and surgery) for closed scaphoid fractures over a 6-year period. We examined subsequent claims to determi

BACKGROUND: HIV molecular epidemiology (HIV ME) can support the early detection of emerging clusters of new HIV infections by combining HIV sequence data routinely obtained during the clinical treatment of people living with HIV with behavioral, geographic, and sociodemographic information. While information about emerging clusters promises to facilitate HIV prevention and treatment efforts, the use of this data also raises several ethical concerns. We sought to assess how those working on the frontlines of HIV ME, specifically public health practitioners (PHPs) and researchers, prioritized th

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a promising technology for restoring communication in individuals with locked-in syndrome (LIS). BCI technology offers a potential tool for individuals with impaired or absent means of effective communication to use brain activity to control an output device such as a computer keyboard. Exploratory studies of BCI devices for communication in people with LIS are underway. Research with individuals with LIS presents not only technological challenges, but ethical challenges as well. Whereas recent attention has been focused on ethical issues that arise at the ini

This paper proposes an ethical framework for evaluating biosafety risks of gain-of-function (GOF) experiments that create novel strains of influenza expected to be virulent and transmissible in humans, so-called potential pandemic pathogens (PPPs). Such research raises ethical concerns because of the risk that accidental release from a laboratory could lead to extensive or even global spread of a virulent pathogen. Biomedical research ethics has focused largely on human subjects research, while biosafety concerns about accidental infections, seen largely as a problem of occupational health, ha

Journalists who cover scientific research, including chemistry research, have an obligation to report on alleged cases of research misconduct when knowledge of these surface. New Government definitions of research misconduct, beginning in the late 1990s with the Clinton Administration, have helped scientists, policymakers, as well as journalists sort out and make sense of alleged research misconduct. Journalistic reporting on research misconduct includes many challenges: gathering information from sources who are intimidated or afraid to speak, strict adherence to journalist ethics that take o

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention research has been fraught with ethical concerns since its inception. These concerns were highlighted during HIV vaccine research and have been elaborated in microbicide research. A host of unique ethical concerns pervade the microbicide research process from trial design to post-trial microbicide availability. Given the urgency of research and development in the face of the devastating HIV pandemic, these ethical concerns represent an enormous challenge for investigators, sponsors and Research Ethics Committees (RECs) both locally and internationally.

The transition from innovation to standard of care for fetal surgery should be guided by ethical considerations. We provide an ethical framework that identifies criteria for the investigation of fetal surgery. This framework addresses the initiation and assessment of clinical trials to determine whether they establish a standard of care, describes an appropriate informed consent process, considers whether selection criteria should include the abortion preferences of the pregnant woman, and considers whether physicians have an obligation to offer referral to such investigation. This ethical fra

This paper aims to provide a description of how authors publishing in medical ethics journals have made use of empirical research data in papers on the topic of gamete or embryo donation by means of references to studies conducted by others (secondary use). Rather than making a direct contribution to the theoretical methodological literature about the role empirical research data could play or should play in ethics studies, the focus is on the particular uses of these data and the problems that can be encountered with this use. In the selection of papers examined, apart from being used to desc

Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities experience significant health inequalities, yet alcohol consumption within these communities remains under-researched. This paper offers a methodological and ethical contribution by reflecting on two qualitative studies of alcohol use in Romany Gypsy and Traveller communities in the United Kingdom: project 1 explores youth drinking, and project 2 examines intergenerational drinking narratives. Drawing on a collaborative partnership with Friends, Families and Travellers, we highlight the importance of equitable partnerships and the role of peer researchers

Peer research, where individuals with lived experience adopt the role of researcher, is increasingly used in studies with young people, particularly on sensitive topics and with marginalised groups. It is valued for its potential to reduce power imbalances and generate rich data. However, conceptual and theoretical gaps remain, particularly concerning ethical complexities and power dynamics. This critical review examines how peer research with young people is conceptualised and implemented in health and social work literature. A systematic search yielded 54 studies involving young people (aged

The South African National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) states in its 2024 Ethics Guidelines that human biological material (HBM) and data cannot be privately owned under South African law. This position conflicts with established legal principles, guidelines by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and South African university policies, all of which support private ownership of HBM and data. Private ownership is not only legally sound but also ethically necessary, providing a framework for accountability, ensuring fair recognition of institutional contributions, an

As AIDS activists voiced their demands for "drugs into bodies" in the late 1980s, American scientists injected drugs into the body of a highly controversial research animal-the chimpanzee. This paper examines the controversy over the use of chimpanzees in U.S. HIV/AIDS research that led to the decline of chimpanzees as laboratory animals. The author suggests that the AIDS epidemic raised the public profile of laboratory chimpanzee research, heightening its pre-existing financial and ethical problems. The scientific and lay debate sparked by chimpanzee AIDS research demonstrates the intersectio
