Compressive Optic Neuropathy Caused by Cholesterol Gran- uloma in the Posterior Ethmoid Sinus.

PURPOSE: Cholesterol granuloma is usually associated with chronic middle ear disease. Involvement of the ethmoid sinus by cholesterol granuloma is rare. We describe a case with cholesterol granuloma of the posterior ethmoid sinus causing optic nerve compression. No previous reports were found in our review of the literature. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man had impaired visual acuity and a relative afferent pupillary defect in the right eye. Fundus fluorescein angiography showed a swollen optic nerve head and optic disc leakage. Automated perimetry revealed a severe peripheral visual field defe

[Ethmoid sinus mucocele penetrating to the orbit and anterior cranial fossa - case report].

Paranasal sinus mucocele is the cystic formation lined by inflammatory changed mucoperiosteum. This is slow-growing pathology with a tendency to bone erosion. The symptoms are dependent on the direction of the penetration, and are as follows: increasing headaches, deformations of frontal or orbital region, ophthalmic manifestations such as lacrimation, decreased visual acuity, exophthalmos, ocular movement limitation, diplopia. The most common location of the mucocele is fronto-ethmoid region. The most useful diagnostic tests are a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a computed tomography (CT

Relationship of the anterior ethmoid sinus to the lacrimal sac: a computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the anatomical relationship between the lacrimal sac and the agger nasi cell on Computed Tomography (CT); to correlate the right and left sides on each scan. METHODS: CT scans of adult patients were reviewed for pneumatization of the agger nasi and its relationship to the lacrimal sac. The degree of agreement between the right and left sides was also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 130 CT scans were examined. An agger nasi cell was found medial to the lacrimal sac in 59.23% of scans. On 86.15% of scans, pneumatization was similar on both sides. CONCLUSION: The agger nas

Progressive proptosis secondary to pneumosinus dilatans of the ethmoidal sinus in a pediatric patient.

Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology which consists of an abnormal dilatation of one or more paranasal air sinuses without radiological evidence of localized mucous membrane alterations, hyperostosis, or bony erosion. Sinus walls are therefore of normal thickness. The enlargement of the bone may be generalized or focal, and apart from the aesthetic problem it carries, it is important to bear in mind the possible functional consequences it may imply. Although PD is usually a benign asymptomatic condition, some patients may develop progressive neurological signs and s

[Extended trans-ethmoidal decompression of the orbit for the treatment of frontal sinus mucopyocele].

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a rare disease not infrequently associated with massive bone destruction, orbital and intracranial complications. The authors report a patient presenting with the giant post-traumatic frontal mucopyocele associated with the erosion of the posterior and inferior sinus walls that was clinically manifested as hypo- and exophthalmos and has caused the inferolateral eye deviation and orbital decompression. The patient displayed the ophtalmological symptoms 8 years after the frontal sinus fracture. The mucopyocele was treated effectively with the combination of t

Up-regulation of heparanase in the ethmoid sinus mucosa of patients with chronic sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Heparanase (HPA) is known to be involved in tissue remodeling of various organs with inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of expression and the pattern of distribution of HPA in normal human sinus mucosa, inflammatory sinus mucosa, and nasal polyps to evaluate the possible effect of HPA on the tissue remodeling of chronic inflammatory sinus mucosa and nasal polyps. METHODS: Normal sinus mucosa was obtained from the ethmoid sinus during endoscopic reduction in 25 patients with blowout fractures. Inflammatory sinus mucosa and nasal polyps were ob

Osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus in a nine-year-old child--an unusual occurrence.

Osteoblastoma is a benign bone tumor which is common in the vertebral column and long bone of the extremities. The paranasal sinus involvement is rare. We reported a case of benign osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus in a nine-year-old boy who presented with exophthalmos. The tumor had aggressive growth with cranial base involvement. Radiologic finding was a mottled soft tissue mass with sclerotic margin. Histologic features were the presence of osteoblast, small trabeculae of woven bone and rich vascular fibrous stroma. Differential diagnoses consist of various kinds of fibro osseous lesions;

Ethmoidal sinus osteoma--a primary cause of nasolacrimal obstruction and dacryocystorhinostomy failure.

An osteoma is a slow growing, bony tumor which forms in the sinuses of the skull. Presenting complaints include headaches, cerebral symptoms, or visual disturbances, depending upon the location of the tumor. This paper describes an unusual case of ethmoid sinus osteoma, with epiphora as the primary symptom; it also caused the failure of a previous dacryocystorhinostomy. This case illustrates the need for thorough evaluation of epiphora, including sinus x-rays.

Hypofractionated palliative radiotherapy for advanced ethmoid sinus squamous cell carcinoma: a case report.

Ethmoid sinus cancer is a rare malignancy, that is, often diagnosed at an advanced stage, making surgical intervention challenging. Herein, we report a case of advanced ethmoid sinus squamous cell carcinoma in a female patient in her 90s. The patient presented with right-sided proptosis, ptosis, diplopia, and nasal obstruction. She was considered unfit for radical surgery or chemoradiotherapy because of her age and other comorbidities. She underwent hypofractionated palliative radiotherapy (35 Gy in 5 fractions) targeting the clinical tumor volume only. Clinically meaningful symptom relief and

Human ethmoid sinus mucosa: a promising novel tissue source of mesenchymal progenitor cells.

INTRODUCTION: The identification of new progenitor cell sources is important for cell-based tissue engineering strategies, understanding regional tissue regeneration, and modulating local microenvironments and immune response. However, there are no reports that describe the identification and isolation of mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) from paranasal sinus mucosa, and compare the properties of MPCs between tissue sources within the sinonasal cavity. We report here the identification of MPCs in the maxillary sinus (MS) and ethmoid sinus (ES). Furthermore, we contrast these MPCs in the same

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in Frontal Sinus, Orbital Cavity and Ethmoid Cavity.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are extremely rare soft tissue sarcomas. Among various locations, the trunk and extremities are the most commonly involved sites, with only 15% of such lesions occuring in head and neck region. Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old male who presented with forehead swelling and right eye deviation. Computed tomography images revealed a tumor involving the frontal sinus, ethmoid sinus, and the orbital cavity. The patient underwent a surgical excision of the lesion, which histopathological examination revealed to be a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tu
