Sideroxylonal B, a natural dimeric acylphloroglucinol, demonstrates promising anticancer potential through a dual mechanism of action involving both cytotoxicity and selective enzyme inhibition. In preliminary screening against the NCI 60 human tumor cell line panel at a concentration of 10-5M, sideroxylonal B exhibited moderate but selective antiproliferative activity, particularly against leukemia (CCRF-CEM, RPMI-8226), breast (MCF7), and renal (CAKI-1) cancer cell lines. Notably, sideroxylonal B selectively inhibits tumor-associated carbonic anhydrase isoforms hCA IX and XII (Ki = 28.1 and

South Africa's commercially planted timber is mainly from the non-native genera Acacia (acacia), Eucalyptus (eucalyptus), and Pinus (pine). These trees are popular because they are fast-growing, stress-tolerant, and commercially profitable. During timber processing, woodworkers can be exposed to wood dust through inhalation or dermal contact. Occupational exposure limits (OELs) have been developed to help protect workers against adverse health effects from overexposure to wood dust. In South Africa, the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents of 2021 (RHCA 2021) list an inhalable OEL-maximum

The fruits of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. are known to have a plenty of medicinal properties, such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive activity. Our previous study found that the phloroglucinol-sesquiterpene adducts in the fruits of E. globulus were immunosuppressive active constituents, especially Eucalyptin C (EuC). Phosphoinositide 3-kinases-γ (PI3Kγ) plays a pivotal role in T cell mediated excessive immune responses. In this study, EuC was first discovered to be a novel selective PI3Kγ inhibitor with an IC50 value of 0.9 μmol·L-1 and selectivity over 40-fold towards the

The general objective of this study was to evaluate Eucalyptus globulus bark extract as a candidate component of wood preservatives with a reduced load of synthetic biocides. Extraction conditions were screened using a 23 full factorial design with a center point, identifying 75 °C, 60% ethanol and 1 h as the highest-yielding conditions (5.94%) within the tested ranges. In four-week laboratory wood-block assays, the extract alone did not exceed 40% inhibition of wood-staining fungi, whereas hinokitiol reached complete inhibition at 0.4%. Combining the extract (5%) with hinokitiol (0.4%) achiev

A rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration can have positive or negative effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) pools, with likely impacts on soil nutrient availability, which can in turn, drive ecosystem-level impacts. Much of the soil nutrients are locked in the more stable mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) pool compared to the more labile particulate organic matter (POM) pool, but how elevated CO2 (eCO2) affects these pools is unclear. In this study, we examined how 12 years of eCO2 affected the POM and MAOM C, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) pools at two different depths (0-10 and 10-20

E. globulus leaves have been mainly exploited for essential oil recovery or for energy generation in industrial pulp mills, neglecting the abundance of valuable families of extractives, namely, triterpenic acids, that might open new ways for the integrated valorization of this biomass. Therefore, this study highlights the lipophilic characterization of E. globulus leaves before and after hydrodistillation, aiming at the integrated valorization of both essential oils and triterpenic acids. The lipophilic composition of E. globulus leaves after hydrodistillation is reported for the first time. E

The response of Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel workers to essential oils, epicuticular wax and hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Eucalyptus maculata was evaluated. Hexane extracts of E. maculata interfered with the recognition mechanism among workers. The main active compounds identified from this plant were the sesquiterpenes elemol and beta-eudesmol. These compounds may be responsible for the resistance of this species to ant attack.

Background: Recently, the use of volatile compounds as spatial repellents have received special attention as a promising strategy for adult An. gambiae s.l control. Anopheles gambiae s.l is a primary vector of malaria, an arthropod-borne disease of global significance. Current strategies for controlling mosquitoes heavily rely on vector control methods. Understanding the responses of these vectors to volatile compounds will be helpful in the formulation of repellants or attractants for control vector populations. This study was conducted in Nwoya district, Uganda, one of the high-malaria-trans

Ticks are of great economic importance to humans and animals due to their role in disease transmission. The application of synthetic, chemical acaricides on the animal and/or the environment (the most used tick control method globally) has led to the selection of tick populations that are resistant. Their adverse effects on ecology and human and animal health cannot be overemphasised. As a result, the search for alternatives that are natural and can overcome these adverse effects are strongly indicated. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and adult immersion test (AIT), this stu
