Exploring attitudes toward euthanasia in Iranian healthcare providers: a systematic review of influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia is a polarizing topic in healthcare, particularly in Iran, where Islamic principles emphasizing the sanctity of life shape ethical perspectives. Understanding the attitudes of Iranian healthcare providers toward euthanasia and the factors influencing these views is critical, given the cultural and religious context. The primary objective of this study was to systematically identify and synthesize the key factors influencing healthcare providers' attitudes toward euthanasia in Iran. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Sc

Attitudes, Roles, and Competencies of Clinical Psychologists Regarding Euthanasia Due to Unbearable Mental Suffering.

Since the enactment of Belgium's euthanasia law in 2002, clinical psychologists have played an increasingly significant role in the multidisciplinary approach to euthanasia, particularly regarding cases involving unbearable mental suffering (UMS euthanasia). This cross-sectional study examined the attitudes, roles, and competencies of clinical psychologists in Flanders concerning UMS euthanasia using an online questionnaire (n = 242). The survey explored attitudes towards UMS euthanasia, as well as self-perceived competencies and involvement. Results indicate that most psychologists hold a gen

Euthanasia efficacy and plasma biochemical implications of intraperitoneal thiamylal sodium in three rat strains.

Acceptable euthanasia methods must rapidly induce unconsciousness and death without pain or distress. We evaluated intraperitoneal thiamylal sodium (TM; 150 mg/kg; hereafter TM150) in male Sprague-Dawley, Wistar, and Fischer 344 rats. TM produced immobilization, loss of righting reflex, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest in all strains, with the shortest latencies in Fischer 344. Plasma chemistry showed strain-dependent shifts, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) increases and variable alanine aminotransferase (ALT) responses; chloride and calcium showed small, non-uniform changes a

Comparing various euthanasia devices and methods on 8 and 12-week-old turkey hens.

On-farm euthanasia of poultry is a necessity for minimizing disease spread and removing sick or injured birds to maintain optimum animal welfare. There are numerous methods that are approved for euthanasia of poultry by organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association; however, all approved methods are not easily carried out on-farm or as effective as one another. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare several captive bolt devices (Turkey Euthanasia Device, Zephyr-EXL, Jarvis Stunner, Experimental Crossbow), mechanical cervical dislocation (Broomstick method [BRM]

Physiologic, Behavioral, and Histologic Responses to Various Euthanasia Methods in C57BL/6NTac Male Mice.

Rodent euthanasia using exposure to increasing concentrations of CO2 has come under scrutiny due to concerns of potential pain during the euthanasia process. Alternatives to CO2, such as isoflurane and barbiturates, have been proposed as more humane methods of euthanasia. In this study, we examined 3 commonly used euthanasia methods in mice: intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital-phenytoin solution, CO2 inhalation, and isoflurane anesthesia followed by CO2 inhalation. We hypothesized that pentobarbital-phenytoin euthanasia would cause fewer alterations in cardiovascular response, result in

Anesthesia for euthanasia influences mRNA expression in healthy mice and after traumatic brain injury.

Tissue sampling for gene expression analysis is usually performed under general anesthesia. Anesthetics are known to modulate hemodynamics, receptor-mediated signaling cascades, and outcome parameters. The present study determined the influence of anesthetic paradigms typically used for euthanization and tissue sampling on cerebral mRNA expression in mice. Naïve mice and animals with acute traumatic brain injury induced by controlled cortical impact (CCI) were randomized to the following euthanasia protocols (n=10-11/group): no anesthesia (NA), 1 min of 4 vol% isoflurane in room air (ISO), 3 m

Comparative legal and bioethical perspectives on euthanasia and assisted suicide: a systematic review of european frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia and assisted suicide remain legally and ethically contested practices across Europe. National frameworks differ in eligibility criteria, procedural safeguards, and oversight mechanisms, reflecting diverse cultural, religious, and bioethical perspectives. The recent approval of Spain’s Organic Law 3/2021 regulating euthanasia provides a relevant context for comparative analysis. This review addresses the following research question: To what extent do differences in European legislation on euthanasia and assisted suicide impact the application of core bioethical principles

Conceptions of Medical Assistance in Dying and Euthanasia: A Literature Review on the Role of Religious Affiliation and Religiosity.

Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (EAS) constitute a profoundly significant issue of growing relevance in the context of healthcare. As more jurisdictions legalize EAS, its societal impacts continue to grow, and it is important that religious perspectives are understood and thoughtfully considered in public discourse on this topic. A literature review of quantitative studies examining views on EAS based on religious affiliation and religiosity was conducted across four databases. Extracted data included survey questions, year of data collection, geographic location, population subgroup

Predictors of Support for Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide (EPAS) Among Older Adults in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (EPAS) are highly contentious topics with significant medical, legal, and cultural implications. Previous research suggests that various sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial factors determine attitudes toward EPAS. This study set out to identify psychosocial predictors of support for EPAS. We hypothesized that perceived control, self-efficacy, and social support would each predict support for EPAS after controlling for sociodemographic and health-related variables. METHODS: For this study, we recruited 446 Jewish Israeli adults who w

Euthanasia and end-of-life decisions in terminal illness situations: Exploring attitudes of patients and relatives.

Although euthanasia is an increasingly debated issue, there is little information on the beliefs held by patients with advanced diseases and their relatives on it. As part of the ILive project, our research team aimed at filling that gap by conducting a study on the degree of agreement among Argentine patients with terminal illnesses and their relatives on end-of-life medical decisions using the Attitudes toward Euthanasia (ATE) scale. Data analysis showed that 77 of 153 patients (50.3%) and 73 of 139 patients' relatives (52.5%) scored higher than 30 on the scale. Agreement with performing eut

Intrahepatic Injection of Sodium Pentobarbital as an Alternative to Intraperitoneal Injection for the Euthanasia of Rats (Rattus norvegicus).

The most commonly accepted method of rat euthanasia in North America is intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbital (PB). However, misinjection can occur, and intraperitoneal PB may cause pain and distress. The objective of this study was to test an alternative method of euthanasia: intrahepatic injection of PB. A pilot study was conducted to develop a method of intrahepatic injections (evaluated using CT scans and test injections), followed by a full study comparing intraperitoneal (n = 14) and intrahepatic PB injections (n = 66) in adult rats. Full study outcomes were: 1) time from inj

[Control of canine visceral leishmaniasis by euthanasia: estimated effect based on a survey and mathematical modeling].

Visceral leishmaniasis is an emerging and neglected disease that is currently expanding to urban areas. The incidence of human disease is related to canine infection. Araçatuba and Birigui are municipalities (counties) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with 8-10% seroprevalence of canine infection and that employ control strategies targeting the canine reservoir, based on serological survey and culling of seropositive dogs. Using data from these control programs to parameterize mathematical models, this study assessed the efficacy of these activities. We estimated that current control is capa

Impact of anesthesia and euthanasia on metabolomics of mammalian tissues: studies in a C57BL/6J mouse model.

A critical application of metabolomics is the evaluation of tissues, which are often the primary sites of metabolic dysregulation in disease. Laboratory rodents have been widely used for metabolomics studies involving tissues due to their facile handing, genetic manipulability and similarity to most aspects of human metabolism. However, the necessary step of administration of anesthesia in preparation for tissue sampling is not often given careful consideration, in spite of its potential for causing alterations in the metabolome. We examined, for the first time using untargeted and targeted me

Evaluation of the foetal time to death in mice after application of direct and indirect euthanasia methods.

Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes requires that the killing of mammal foetuses during the last third of their gestational period should be accomplished through effective and humane methods. The fact that murine foetuses are resistant to hypoxia-mediated euthanasia renders the current euthanasia methods ineffective or humane for the foetuses when these methods are applied to pregnant female mice. We have assessed the time to death of foetuses after performing either indirect (dam euthanasia) or direct (via intraplacental injection--a new approach to
