Cumulative effects of subsequent concussions on the neural patterns of young rugby athletes: data from event-related potentials.

Our study aimed at detecting a potential cumulative effect of subsequent concussions on the neural activation patterns of young rugby athletes with or without concussion history. Event-related brain potential (ERP) data from 24 rugby players, 22-year-old on average, were retrospectively examined. All underwent a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT2) during preseason and an on-site ERP task (P300) following a recent concussion event (<48 hours). Sixteen players suffered at least one concussion in the previous 3 years and eight were without self-reported past concussion. While no differences

Cognitive reappraisal fails when attempting to reduce the appetitive value of food: an ERP study.

This event-related potential (ERP) study investigated neural correlates of cognitive reappraisal during the exposure to food cues. Thirty-three healthy, normal-weight women viewed images of high-caloric food and non-food items after an overnight fast. The participants were instructed to either passively look at the pictures, or to change (increase, decrease) the appetitive value of the food items. The P300 and the late positive potential (LPP) were higher across all conditions for food relative to non-food pictures. In the 'increase condition' the food images were rated as more appetizing and

Using somatosensory mismatch responses as a window into somatotopic processing of tactile stimulation.

Brain responses to tactile stimulation have often been studied through the examination of ERPs elicited to touch on the body surface. Here, we examined two factors potentially modulating the amplitude of the somatosensory mismatch negativity (sMMN) and P300 responses elicited by touch to pairs of body parts: (a) the distance between the representation of these body parts in somatosensory cortex, and (b) the physical distances between the stimulated points on the body surface. The sMMN and the P300 response were elicited by tactile stimulation in two oddball protocols. One protocol leveraged a

Electrophysiological characterization of hearing in individuals with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have performed Brainstem (BAEP) and P300 Auditory Evoked Potentials simultaneously to assess central auditory pathways in normal hearing individuals with Down syndrome (DS), mainly because of the difficulty in applying these procedures to this population. Previous studies have suggested that individuals with DS might present different patterns of response compared with those of individuals with typical development; nevertheless, the identification of these potentials would be crucial for the establishment of an accurate audiological diagnosis. PURPOSE: To characteriz

Cognitive processing of cluster headache patients: evidence from event-related potentials.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral and central origins of pain in cluster headache (CH) have been a matter of much debate. The development and application of functional imaging techniques have provided more evidence supporting the hypothesis that CH is not a disorder exclusively peripheral in origin, and in fact central regions might be more important. Event-related potentials confer advantages in the functional evaluation of the cortex, but few studies thus far have employed this method in cluster headache. METHODS: Seventeen cluster patients (15 males; mean age = 35.4 years) and 15 age-matched heal

In-clinic event related potentials after sports concussion: A 4-year study.

PURPOSE: Electrophysiological event-related potentials (ERP's) have been reported to change after concussion. The objective of this study is to use a simple 2-tone auditory P300 ERP in routine clinical settings to measure changes from baseline after concussion and to determine if these changes persist at return to play when other standard measures have normalized. METHODS: Three-hundred sixty-four (364) student athletes, aged 17-23 years, participating in contact sports were tracked over consecutive years. In this blinded study P300, plus physical reaction times and Trail Making tests, were c

Psychophysiological differences in schizophrenics with and without delusional misidentification syndromes: a P300 study.

There is a debate on whether delusional misidentification syndromes (DMSs) and schizophrenia are distinct disorders. Information-processing deficits have been found in both. Since the P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) reflects attention and working memory (WM) mechanisms, the P300 elicited during a WM test was studied in schizophrenic patients with DMS in comparison to schizophrenic patients without DMS and controls. Nine schizophrenic patients with DMS, 11 without DMS and 11 healthy controls were tested with a computerized version of the digit span test of the Wechsler batteri

Event-related-potential low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (ERP-LORETA) suggests decreased energetic resources for cognitive processing in narcolepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Event-related potentials (ERPs) are sensitive measures of both perceptual and cognitive processes. The aim of the present study was to identify brain regions involved in the processes of cognitive dysfunction in narcolepsy by means of ERP tomography. METHODS: In 17 drug-free patients with narcolepsy and 17 controls, ERPs were recorded (auditory odd-ball paradigm). Latencies, amplitudes and LORETA sources were determined for standard (N1 and P2) and target (N2 and P300) ERP components. Psychometry included measures of mental performance, affect and critical flicker fusion frequency

Attentive and preattentive processing in narcolepsy as revealed by event-related potentials (ERPs).

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder, characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep attacks, cataplexy and abnormal manifestations of rapid eye movement sleep. Recent studies suggest that neuropsychological impairments in narcolepsy may include memory and attention deficits due to a monoaminergic or cholinergic transmitter dysfunction. To explore the nature of cognitive problems, the P300 and mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related potentials were investigated in narcoleptic patients and matched controls. Narcoleptics showed significantly increased P300 amplitudes relative to controls,

The relation between schizotypy and early attention to rejecting interactions: The influence of neuroticism.

OBJECTIVES: Schizotypy relates to rejection sensitivity (anxiety reflecting an expectancy of social exclusion) and neuroticism (excessive evaluation of negative emotions). Positive schizotypy (e.g., perceptual aberrations and odd beliefs) and negative schizotypy (e.g., social and physical anhedonia) could relate to altered attention to rejection because of neuroticism. METHODS: Forty-one healthy individuals were assessed on positive and negative schizotypy and neuroticism, and event-related potentials during rejecting, accepting and neutral scenes. Participants were categorised into high, mod

Dissociable mechanisms supporting awareness: the P300 and gamma in a linguistic attentional blink task.

As demonstrated by the attentional blink (AB) phenomenon, awareness for attended stimuli is governed by sharp capacity limits. We used a linguistic AB task to investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie failures of awareness, examining both event-related potentials and oscillatory brain activity to correctly reported and missed second targets (T2s) presented after a correctly reported first target (T1) in a rapid visual stream of distractors. Correctly reported targets occurring at a short lag (250 ms) after T1-within the classic AB period-elicited enhanced late gamma activity relative to

Auditory P300 as a Neurophysiological Correlate of Symptomatic Improvement by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Patients With Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Background. The reduced amplitude, prolonged latency, and increased intertrial variability of auditory P300 have been consistently reported in relation to the symptomatic severity of schizophrenia. This study investigated whether auditory P300 event-related potentials can be used as an objective indicator of symptomatic improvement by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients with schizophrenia. Methods. Ten patients with schizophrenia received 20 minutes of 2-mA tDCS twice a day for 5 consecutive weekdays. The anode was placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and

[P300 findings in patients with corticobasal degeneration].

An auditory discrimination paradigm was employed to elicit the P300 component of the event-related potentials from three patients with clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Presenile and senile dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT), vascular dementia (VD) and age-matched control subjects were also examined. All patients with CBD manifested limb kinetic apraxia, hemiparkinsonism and mild dementia. Brain MRI revealed marked parietal atrophy, which was predominant in contralateral to the extremities with severe motor dysfunction. 123I-IMP SPECT analysis showed asymmetric reduction of c

The Absent P3a. Performance Monitoring ERPs Differentiate Trust in Humans and Autonomous Systems.

To address suggestions that human brain responses to autonomous system errors may be used as brain-based measures of trust in automation, the present study asked participants to monitor the performance of either a virtual human or an autonomous system partner performing a novel, complex, real-world image classification task. We predicted visual feedback of partner errors would elicit the feedback-related negativity and P3 ERP components, and that these components would differ between the human and system groups. Behavioral results showed that while participants calibrated their trust in their

Attentional management of cognitive-motor interference in adults during walking: Insights from an EEG study.

Dual-task paradigms, which involve performing cognitive and motor tasks simultaneously, are commonly used to study how attentional resources are allocated and managed under varying task demands. This study aimed to investigate cognitive-motor interferences (CMI) under different levels of cognitive and motor task difficulty without instruction on task prioritization. 17 healthy young adults performed an auditory oddball task with increasing cognitive and motor (walking vs. sitting) difficulty. Cognitive and motor performances, along with P3 (P3a and P3b) brainwave components, were analysed. Inc

Neurophysiological markers of cognitive deficits and recovery in concussed adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to determine: 1) whether concussed adolescents exhibited deficits in neurocognitive functioning as reflected by neurophysiological alterations; 2) if neurophysiological alterations could be linked to supplementary data such as the number of previous concussions and days since injury; and 3) if deficits in psychological health and behavioural tests increased during diagnosis duration. METHODS: Twenty-six concussed adolescents were compared to twenty-eight healthy controls with no prior concussions. Self-report inventories evaluated depressive and concussive

Visuospatial information processing load and the ratio between parietal cue and target P3 amplitudes in the Attentional Network Test.

In ERP studies of cognitive processes during attentional tasks, the cue signals containing information about the target can increase the amplitude of the parietal cue P3 in relation to the 'neutral' temporal cue, and reduce the subsequent target P3 when this information is valid, i.e. corresponds to the target's attributes. The present study compared the cue-to-target P3 ratios in neutral and visuospatial cueing, in order to estimate the contribution of valid visuospatial information from the cue to target stages of the task performance, in terms of cognitive load. The P3 characteristics were

Feedback-related negativity encodes outcome uncertainty in the gain domain but not in the loss domain.

Outcome uncertainty plays an important role in decision making. The present study used event-related potentials (ERP) combined with a simple gambling task to investigate the time course of outcome uncertainty processing in the gain and the loss domains. Behaviorally, participants showed a preference for the uncertain option in the gain domain, whereas they showed no such preference in the loss domain. In ERP analyses, the feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitudes mirrored the behavioral results: for gains, cue-elicited FRN amplitudes were more negative for uncertain than for certain cues, w

Toward an ERP-driven diagnostic approach for reading impairments.

This preliminary study attempted to use Event Related Brain Potentials (ERPs) to identify different causes for slow reading performance. At least two unique brain activity patterns were found for below average readers. Based on visual inspection of the N170 ERP component elicited by words in a lexical decision task, participants were either classified as N170-normal or N170-absent. Although both groups showed very dissimilar brain activity patterns, they did not differ in any reading or cognitive measures. Differences in brain activity were discussed as indicators for disturbances at specific
