Multimodality evoked potentials in children with moyamoya disease.

Twenty Japanese children with Moyamoya disease were investigated by examining the multimodality evoked potentials (BAEPs, FVEPs and SSEPs). BAEPs were abnormally prolonged wave I-III and wave III-V in each one (10%). FVEPs were abnormal in 6 (30%), included prolonged latencies, reduced amplitudes and poor waveform in one each, and delayed latencies as well as reduced amplitudes in three. FVEPs significantly correlated with intellectual deterioration (p less than 0.01). SSEPs were abnormal in 13 (65%) significantly more frequent than BAEPs and FVEPs (p less than 0.01); reduction of N20 in 7, de

Cerebral evoked potentials in human chronic Chagas' disease.

Seventy five patients with the diagnosis of chronic Chagas' disease were studied by employing EPs techniques. Two of them had delayed arrival of the signal to the Erb's point and one to the spinal cord when looking at SEPs. Two patients had increment of the time interval between waves Ist and IIIrd, when studying PEATs. These findings were interpreted as due to peripheral nerve fibers damage, a feature described in previous papers. The most striking finding was the prolonged time interval between waves N13 and N20 (SEPs) found in two patients and between waves IIIrd and Vth (PEAT) seen in 7 af

Motor-evoked potentials of facial musculature in dogs.

Motor responses of limb musculature have been elicited by transcranial brain stimulation using electrical and magnetic stimulation. Recording from muscles innervated by cranial nerves has not previously been reported. A unilateral hemispheric craniotomy was performed in 24 dogs. An electric stimulus was delivered directly to the exposed motor cortex via surface electrodes. Evoked electromyographic responses to motor cortex stimulation were recorded from the contralateral orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris muscles. Preliminary investigation into the use of magnetic stimulation of the motor

Multimodality evoked potentials in HTLV-I associated myelopathy.

Multimodality evoked potentials (EPs) consisting of somatosensory EPs (SEPs), visual EPs (VEPs) and brainstem auditory EPs (BAEPs) were studied in 16 cases with HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM). Median nerve SEPs were normal in all cases. In posterior tibial nerve SEPs, the potential recorded at the 12th thoracic spinal process was normal in every case but cortical components were significantly prolonged in 10 cases, although five of these showed no sensory impairment. BAEPs were normal in every case whose hearing was intact, but VEPs were abnormal in two cases whose visual acuities were nor

Somatosensory evoked potentials following lesions of the claustrum.

Ipsi- and contralateral cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded following median nerve stimulation in 12 patients with unilateral brain lesions and in 5 healthy subjects. Computed tomographic scans of brain were performed on admission. In all patients with lesions of the claustrum there was absence of SEP contralateral to the side of the lesion and ipsilateral to the stimulated nerve. This phenomenon did not appear in our material following lesions involving other structures e.g. thalamus or somatosensory cortex. Our observations suggest that the claustrum may influence de

Motor-evoked potentials of tongue musculature in dogs.

Transcranial brain stimulation by either electrical or noninvasive magnetic stimulation has produced motor responses of limb musculature. However, recordings from muscles innervated by cranial nerves have not previously been reported. A right-sided craniotomy was performed in 18 dogs. An electric stimulus was delivered to the motor cortex via surface electrodes and evoked EMG responses were recorded from the tongue musculature to determine conduction time. Magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex yielded EMG latencies similar to those obtained by electrical direct cortical stimulation, thus de

Brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials in spasmodic torticollis.

The pathophysiology of idiopathic spasmodic torticollis is uncertain. Cerebral, basal ganglia, brain-stem, and cervicomedullary lesions have been implicated. Some investigators have found evoked-potential abnormalities, while others have not. We recorded brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials in six patients with otherwise normal result of examinations and laboratory studies. Brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials were recorded from Cz-A1 and Cz-A2 with rarefaction clicks delivered at 11.1/s and 70 dB above sensory threshold with 40-dB contralateral masking. Analysis time was 10 ms, filter bandp

Locus coeruleus stimulation modulates olfactory bulb evoked potentials.

Field-evoked potentials from the main olfactory bulb in response to stimulation of the olfactory nerve and lateral olfactory tract were measured without and with conditioning stimulation of the locus coeruleus noradrenergic system. The locus coeruleus conditioning stimulus suppressed or inhibited the late components of the olfactory bulb potential evoked by orthodromic olfactory nerve stimulation; this inhibitory effect was suppressed by the microinjection of the alpha-adrenergic blocker prazosin into the olfactory bulb. Results indicate that noradrenergic fibers projecting from the locus coer

Measures of auditory evoked potentials during optokinetic stimulation.

In this investigation auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by click stimuli were recorded before, during, and after optokinetic stimulation in subjects that were (N = 10) or were not (N = 10) prone to visually induced motion sickness. The latency of Wave I, and the I-III and I-V interwave intervals were measured. A significant increase in the I-III interwave interval occurred only during optokinetic stimulation. Neither the Wave I latency nor the interwave interval differed with respect to subject groups and this factor did not interact with any other variables. These results suggest th

Short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials in brain death.

Simultaneous recording of somatosensory evoked potentials to median nerve stimulation above the upper and lower neck in brain-dead patients revealed that all cervical responses were preserved in 10%, whereas a marked reduction in amplitude or even loss of N 13b at the level of the C2 spinous process was observed in 90%. Of the patients, 55% revealed an additional loss of N 13a, recorded at the level of the C7 spinous process; in 15% all cortical and spinal evoked potentials were missing, but Erb's point waves were still normal. These results suggest two different origins of the main negative w

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in rheumatoid cervical subluxation.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) were recorded in 34 patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis. Eighteen had atlanto-axial subluxation and 16 had no roentgenological evidence of cervical subluxation. Four patients in the group with cervical subluxation showed pathological SSEP values from both median and tibial nerves indicating conduction block in the upper cervical medulla. In the group with no cervical subluxation, 6 patients had prolonged SSEP latency, 5 of these on recordings from the tibial nerves with normal median nerve latencies and one with only bilaterally prolonged median ne

Lateral dominance and visual evoked potentials in albinos.

Lateral preferences for the use of eye, hand, and foot were assessed in 17 male and female albino subjects, aged 15 to 52 yr. Visual evoked potential (VEP) recordings suggested that optic fibres were abnormally decussated in these subjects, as others have shown. Fewer albino subjects showed the lateral preference for the use of hand/eye and foot/eye similar to that of normals. It is postulated that the abnormal decussation of optic fibres may underlie the reduced preference for the use of the same hand and eye, and foot and eye, in albinos.

Early somatosensory evoked potentials in supratentorial brain tumors.

Early somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in 33 patients with supratentorial brain tumors (9 benign tumors, 17 glioblastomas and 7 metastases). All the cases were studied with CT scan and all but 2 were surgically explored and histologically classified. Evoked potentials were statistically analyzed regarding the nature and site of the tumors. The temporal malignant tumors showed the most significant alterations in latencies, particularly for waves P25, N34 and P44.

[Visual and acoustic evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis].

A central topic of recent research on multiple sclerosis (MS) concerns the development of sensitive neurophysiological techniques with the ability to detect lesions at the earliest possible stage. Specifically, the recording of evoked potentials has during the past decade demonstrated its diagnostic value by disclosing clinically silent lesions especially of the optic nerve and brainstem region. The visual evoked potential (VEP) was registered in 177 patients with definite, probable and possible MS (McAlpine). Abnormal latencies were obtained in 86/46/34% of these three patient groups, respect

Interhemispheric transmission: assessment with vibratory somatosensory evoked potentials.

Interhemispheric transmission time (ITT) was derived from vibratory somatosensory evoked potentials (VSEP) arising in homologous cortical sensory--association areas of normals. Two different vibratory sources, an audiometer bone oscillator or an Optacon, were used to stimulate each index finger independently. ITT was calculated by subtracting the latency of the first major peak over the contralateral cortex (CL) from the latency of the corresponding peak over the ipsilateral area (IL-CL = ITT). Readily identified aberrant values were observed and rejected from the series of measurements leavin

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials and chronic alcoholism].

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were obtained from 25 chronic alcoholic patients. The patients had been drinking heavily for an average of 15 years and a minimum of 5 years. All patients were totally abstinent for a minimum of 3 weeks. The morphology of waves were often altered. All presented prolonged I-III, III-V, inter-peak latencies (IPLs) and a loss of amplitude of wave V. The I-III, III-V and I-VIPLs were increased between 30 and 40 years, and III-V and I-VIPLs between 40 and 50 years. The incidence of abnormal BAEPs in patients with alcoholic epilepsy was not different fro

Auditory brain-stem evoked potentials in Bell's palsy.

In an attempt to assess objectively the integrity of the auditory pathways in patients suffering from Bell's palsy, an audiometric evaluation was performed and auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEP) were obtained from 24 patients within the first week from the onset of facial weakness. Despite negative audiometric findings, significant ABEP abnormalities (greater than 2.5 SDs) were observed for 25% of the sample. In each case the ABEP deviation suggested prolonged brain-stem conduction time; for some patients the aberration was only apparent with an increased stimulus repetition rate. Th

Equipotential maps of pattern-evoked potentials in man.

Pattern-evoked cortical potentials for half field stimuli were recorded from 16 electrodes on the scalp, and equipotential maps were constructed. For right and left half field stimuli, the maximal values of the maps were found over the hemisphere ipsilateral to the visual half field stimulated. For lower half field binocular stimuli, the maxima were more anterior than for monocular stimuli (for upper field stimuli, inverted location differences were found). In hemianoptic patients, the maxima were obtained over the impaired hemisphere regardless which part of the visual field was stimulated. T
