Relationship Between Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Clinical Function in Patients With Cerebral Infarction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and clinical outcomes at discharge in patients who have had subacute ischemic stroke. METHODS: A total of 210 patients who have had ischemic stroke, confirmed by MRI within 3 months after onset, were enrolled. Demographics and stroke-related clinical assessment scales, such as the modified Barthel index and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), were collected. Recorded latencies of waveforms I, III, and V of BAEP were bilaterally collected and analyzed. The res

Effects of intensity, attention and medication on auditory-evoked potentials in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) has been associated to an increased processing of somatosensory stimuli, but its generalization to other sensory modalities is under discussion. To clarify this, we studied auditory event-related potentials (AEPs) to stimuli of different intensity in patients with FM and healthy controls (HCs), considering the effects of attention mechanisms and medication. We performed two experiments: In study 1 (n = 50 FM, 60 HCs), the stimuli were presented randomly within the sequence; in study 2 (n = 28 FM, 30 HCs), they were presented in blocks of the same intensity. We analyzed intens

Functional data analysis of single-trial auditory evoked potentials recorded in the awake rat.

Evoked potentials (EPs) reflect neural processing and are widely used to study sensory perception. However, methods of analyzing EP have been limited mostly to the conventional ensemble averaging of EP response trials to a repeated stimulus, and less so to single-trials analysis. Here we applied a new approach - functional data analysis (FDA) - to study auditory EP in the rat model of tinnitus, in which overdoses of salicylate (SS) are known to alter sound perception characteristically, as the same way as in humans. Single-trial auditory EPs were analyzed, after being collected on a daily basi

Audiogram of a stranded Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) measured using auditory evoked potentials.

Quantifying and understanding the impact of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals has been the focus of many researchers both in laboratory settings as well as in the field. This study presents the audiogram of a sub-adult Blainville's beaked whale that stranded in Hawaii. The hearing measurements were conducted using the non-invasive auditory brainstem response technique. A total of 11 sinusoidally amplitude modulated tones were tested ranging from 5.6 to 160 kHz. The audiogram data indicated that the region of best hearing was found between 40 and 50 kHz with thresholds below 50 dB. This fre

Calcinosis cutis following calcium chloride electrode paste application for auditory-brainstem evoked potentials recording.

Circumscribed calcification in the dermis (calcinosis cutis) has been reported following electroencephalographic and electromyographic studies at sites of electrode placement following application of an electrode paste containing calcium chloride. Prolonged exposure and skin microabrasions seem to increase the risk of this rare complication of electrode placement, which has not been previously reported following auditory brainstem evoked potential recordings. We report the appearance of localized dermal calcifications at the sites of electrode placement (forehead and retroauricular areas) foll

Clinical interest of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in 72 children with inadequate language development.

The present study is of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in 72 children, of 2 to 13 years of age, showing inadequate language development. The age of the children was mainly below the age of 4 (39 cases = 54%), peaking between 3 and 4 years of age (33 cases = 46%). Even so, 82% of our patients were 3 years old or over: 64% were boys, 36% girls, the proportion of boys falling off with age 26% (19 cases) of BAEPs recorded were normal, 74% (53 cases) pathological. High prevalence of undiagnosed hearing loss was found. Physiopathological BAEP classification showed endocochlear impairmen

[The use of short-latency auditory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas].

The short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with unilateral neurosensory hypoacusis due to the tumor of the acoustic nerve or other etiology were recorded. It was found that the patients had no potential in the diseased area in monaural sound stimulation, but binaural sound stimulation enabled these potentials to be recorded. With this, the short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with verified neurinoma showed a reduction in the third wave to the point of its disappearance. Those in patients whose neurosensory hypoacusis were unassociated with the development of neoplas

[Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss by ipsilateral masking of brain stem auditory evoked potentials].

The Authors show their original technique for the differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear hearing loss which employs ipsilateral masking of the A.B.R. in order to define the difference in V wave latency between a standard technique (clicks at 21 pps without noise) and a sensitized technique (clicks at 21 pps with noise at S/N of +40). This difference in latency has been named Sensitizing Latency Difference (SLD). Sixty normal subjects, 85 patients with cochlear hearing loss and 6 with retrocochlear hearing loss, were studied. The obtained data showed a SLD value: in normal hearing

[Changes in the early auditory evoked potentials during premature infancy, infancy and early childhood].

We report on the derivation of the early acoustic evoked potentials (EAEP) in 498 healthy normotrophic infants between the 32nd post-conceptional week and the end of the 3rd year of life. The changes of the wave latencies and interpeak intervals in different age periods until they reached the constant values found in adults are followed by 1528 potential derivations. The varying rate of maturation of the auditory pathway in the brain stem can be followed up well by the potential patterns. The time around the 34th post-conceptional week is characterized by a maturation episode of central and pe

Improvement in auditory and visual evoked potentials in jaundiced preterm infants after exchange transfusion.

Two preterm infants with peak serum bilirubin concentrations of 270 mumol/l and 200 mumol/l, respectively showed improvement in the wave peak latencies of the auditory and visual evoked potentials after exchange transfusion. The implications of this observation and the use of evoked potential recording in neonatal jaundice are discussed.

Unusual pattern of somatosensory and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials after cardio-respiratory arrest.

Two patients in coma after cardio-pulmonary arrest showed bilateral absence of all brain-stem auditory evoked potentials contrasting with normal brain-stem reflexes and normal somatosensory cortical evoked potentials. In both patients pre-existing dysfunction of peripheral auditory structures could be ruled out. Subsequent neuropathological analysis showed that the anoxic-ischaemic lesions were restricted to Sommer's sector and the Purkinje cells. These unusual data suggest the hypothesis that a severe hypoxic-ischaemic insult may impair cochlear function and interfere with the activation of t

Impaired brainstem auditory evoked potentials after in utero exposure to high dose paracetamol exposure.

Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic medication regarded as the safest over-the-counter pain and fever relief option during pregnancy. Paracetamol and its metabolites are known to reach the developing fetus through direct placental transfer and can cross the blood brain barrier. Several recent, large-scale epidemiologic studies suggest that in utero paracetamol exposure can increase the risk of neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental delay (DD). Since auditory processing deficits are a com

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at varying frequencies.

INTRODUCTION: As per the World Health Organization, in 2005, more than 180 million people had diabetes worldwide. This figure will be more than double by 2030. Neuropathy is common and late complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Sensory neural hearing loss which is severe at higher frequencies has been reported in Type 2 DM patients. Auditory nerve tract damage increases the latency and reduces the amplitude of the response. Evoked potential recordings evaluate the neural pathways in the central nervous system. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) localize anatomic structures using dif
