Effects of core-lower limb coordinated Pilates on gait and balance in women with flexible pes planus: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

In this pilot randomized controlled trial, we assessed the effects of a core-lower limb coordinated Pilates exercise on gait and postural balance in women with bilateral flexible pes planus. Twenty-two women aged 34.64 ± 9.59 years with bilateral navicular drop ≥10 mm assessed by the navicular drop test (NDT) were randomly assigned to either a Pilates training group or a control group. Gait parameters - including foot off, step time, stride time, walking speed, and cadence - were assessed using a validated three-dimensional motion analysis system. Postural balance was quantified as center of p

Application of a Foot Plate in the Taylor Spatial Frame for the Treatment of Acquired Equinus or Equinovarus Deformities.

Fine wire frames are extensively utilized in the management of complex lower limb fractures and for deformity correction. Patients may develop equinus or equinovarus deformities in their feet due to the intricacies associated with the treatment. This may occur due to an inability to exercise and bear weight on the foot for various reasons or, more commonly, as a consequence of reverse tibial bone transport, in which the corticotomy is performed at the distal fragment, resulting in proximal bone transport. This technical note delineates the application of a foot plate to an existing fine wire f

Outcome evaluation using an artificial intelligence-based facial measurement software for facial nerve grafting in head and neck and skull base surgery.

BACKGROUND: Interposition nerve grafting is an indispensable technique for facial nerve reconstruction in head and neck, and skull base surgery. The prognostic factors are inconclusive, partly due to limited objective assessment systems for facial nerve function. This study aimed to apply an artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial asymmetry measurement system to assess facial nerve grafting outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of 23 patients who underwent facial nerve grafting between 2011 and 2020. Oral asymmetry and synkinesis severity were measured using AI. RESULTS: Oral

Effect of the 'Pilates stance' and Pilates-based matwork training on measurements of height, waist circumference, and interscapular distance.

BACKGROUND: Standardised guidelines for stance are used to improve interobserver reliability in anthropometric measurements in clinical practice. A key feature of the stance in Pilates is the 'drawing in and up' of the abdomen. The aim of this study was to study the impact of the Pilates stance on height, waist circumference and interscapular distance, compared to that recommended in clinical practice. METHODS: 48 healthy females (median age 60 years) were assessed before and after 10-week Pilates-based matwork training. One Pilates expert and one novice took independent measurements of weigh

Interactive Cognitive-Motor Step Training Improves Cognitive Risk Factors of Falling in Older Adults - A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Interactive cognitive-motor training (ICMT) requires individuals to perform both gross motor movements and complex information processing. This study investigated the effectiveness of ICMT on cognitive functions associated with falls in older adults. METHODS: A single-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted in community-dwelling older adults (N = 90, mean age 81.5±7) without major cognitive impairment. Participants in the intervention group (IG) played four stepping games that required them to divide attention, inhibit irrelevant stimuli, switch between tasks, rotate object

A new paradigm for rehabilitation of patients with chronic ankle instability.

Lateral ankle sprains have been shown to be one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in both athletes and the recreationally active population. Moreover, it is estimated that approximately 30% of people who incur a lateral ankle sprain will sustain recurrent ankle sprains and experience symptoms of pain and instability that last > 1 year. Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is the term used to describe cases involving repetitive ankle sprains, multiple episodes of the ankle "giving way," persistent symptoms, and diminished self-reported function for > 1 year after the initial ankle sprain.

Mechanical risk of rotator cuff repair failure during passive movements: A simulation-based study.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in rotator cuff surgery techniques, re-tear rate remains above 20% and increases with tear severity. Mechanical stresses to failure of repaired tendons have been reported. While optimal immobilization postures were proposed to minimize this stress, post-operative rehabilitation protocols have never been assessed with respect to these values. Purpose was to use musculoskeletal simulation to predict when the stress in repaired tendons exceeds safety limits during passive movements. Hence, guidelines could be provided towards safer post-operative exercises. METHO

Using a criteria-based reminder to reduce use of indwelling urinary catheters and decrease urinary tract infections.

In the rehabilitation literature, fatigue is a common symptom of patients with any neurological impairment when defined as a subjective lack of physical and mental energy that interferes with usual activities. Some complaints may, however, arise from fatigability , an objective decline in strength as routine use of muscle groups proceeds. By this refined definition of fatigue, exercise or sustained use reduces the ability of muscles to produce force or power, regardless of whether the task can be sustained. Fatigability may be masked clinically because (1) the degree of weakening is not profou

Analysing patterns of coordination and patterns of control using novel data visualisation techniques in vector coding.

OBJECTIVE: Vector coding is a non-linear data analysis technique that quantifies inter-segmental coordination and coordination variability. The traditional approach of reporting time-series data from vector coding can be problematic when overlaying multiple trials on the same illustration. The objective of this study was to describe and present novel data visualisations for displaying the coordination pattern, segmental dominancy, range of motion on an angle-angle diagram, and coordination variability. This allows for a comparison of data across multiple participants with a focus on single sub

Effect of knee position on hip and knee torques during the barbell squat.

UNLABELLED: Some recommendations suggest keeping the shank as vertical as possible during the barbell squat, thus keeping the knees from moving past the toes. This study examined joint kinetics occurring when forward displacement of the knees is restricted vs. when such movement is not restricted. Seven weight-trained men (mean +/- SD; age = 27.9 +/- 5.2 years) were videotaped while performing 2 variations of parallel barbell squats (barbell load = body weight). Either the knees were permitted to move anteriorly past the toes (unrestricted) or a wooden barrier prevented the knees from moving a

Modified constraint induced movement therapy enhanced by a neuro-development treatment-based therapeutic handling protocol: two case studies.

Modified Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) and Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) are both intervention strategies that focus on active practice to optimize function. CIMT involves constraint of the less involved upper extremity during function and NDT includes facilitation of optimal postural control and symmetry to enhance the ability to complete a given motor function. The purpose of this article is to describe an intervention protocol for children with hemiplegia that integrates key NDT and CIMT principles. Two children participated in a modified CIMT (mCIMT)/NDT program 2 hours

Effect of the association of continuous shortwave diathermy and Pilates-based exercises on pain, depression, and anxiety in chronic non-specific low back pain: a randomized clinical trial.

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) is the most common musculoskeletal condition, which can be influenced by nociceptive, psychosocial, cognitive, and affective aspects, causing vulnerabilities and impairing the individual's ability to manage pain. The association of continuous shortwave diathermy (CSWD) with Pilates-based exercises may contribute to reduce pain, depression, and anxiety in patients with CNLBP. A single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed in which 36 patients with CNLBP were divided into a control group that received placebo CSWD and an intervention group that r

Time-frequency methods applied to muscle fatigue assessment during dynamic contractions.

This paper discusses the assessment of the electrical manifestations of muscle fatigue during dynamic contractions. In the past, the study of muscle fatigue was restricted to isometric constant force contractions because, in this contraction paradigm, the myoelectric signal may be considered as wide sense stationary over epochs lasting up to two or three seconds, and hence classic spectral estimation techniques may be applied. Recently, the availability of spectral estimation techniques specifically designed for nonstationary signal analysis made it possible to extend the employment of muscle
