BACKGROUND: Melanin pigments are ubiquitous in nature. Melanized microorganisms are often the dominating species in certain extreme environments, such as soils contaminated with radionuclides, suggesting that the presence of melanin is beneficial in their life cycle. The gelatinase, urease, lipase, phospholipase and DNase activities of 11 chromoblastomycosis agents constituted by strains of Fonsecaea pedrosoi, F. compacta, Phialophora verrucosa, Cladosporium carrionii, Cladophialophora bantiana and Exophiala jeanselmei were analyzed and compared. We report a case of chromomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi that developed in the left buttock of a 63-year-old female farmer. About 4 years ago, the patient developed erythema in the left buttock, which gradually spread. The connection between the gut mycobiome and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) is largely uncharted. A 20-year-old male presented with multiple subcutaneous nodules on the head, neck, chest and oral cavity. Hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis are groups of mycoses caused by several agents and show different clinical manifestations. We report a case of an immunocompromised patient who presented rare manifestations of opportunistic mycoses: mycetoma-like hyalohyphomycosis on his right foot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, followed by cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis on his right forearm caused by Exophiala oligosperma. BACKGROUND: Infections are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in transplanted patients. The increasing number of immunocompromised patients has not only augmented infections by specific pathogens, but also by opportunistic microbial agents.
METHODS: A mixed cutaneous infection caused by Nocardia brasiliensis and Exophiala jeanselmei is reported in a liver transplant patient.
RESULTS: The cutaneous lesions were painful nodules which drained purulent material. They were located on the right lower limb, with lymphadenopathies in the groin.

Dishwashers may serve as reservoirs of microorganisms. In this study, 22 dishwashers from Lower Silesia (Poland) were analyzed for fungal contamination. Samples collected from various dishwasher sites revealed the presence of yeast-like fungi, with rubber seals being the most frequently colonized site. Cladophialophora carrionii is one of the relatively common causative agents of chromoblastomycosis. We have developed the specific oligonucleotide primer set based on the internal transcribed spacer regions of ribosomal DNA for the rapid identification of this pathogen. Tinea nigra is a superficial mycosis that may mimic serious pigmentary lesions. A lesion recently encountered on the foot was suspected of being a malignant melanoma. Histologic and mycologic studies, done after a biopsy was obtained, demonstrated Exophilia werneckii in the stratum corneum. Tinea nigra should be considered in the diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the hands and feet. A KOH examination is a simple and rapid means of demonstrating this entity.

Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous, subcutaneous disease endemic in tropical and subtropical countries. It is currently a health problem in rural areas of Africa, Asia and South America. Our in vitro studies showed that a combination of amphotericin B and terbinafine had synergistic effects against the majority of melanized fungi associated with chromoblastomycosis (CBM) and similar infections, including those with Cladophialophora carrionii, Cladophialophora arxii, Exophialadermatitidis, Exophialaspinifera, Fonsecaea monophora, Fonsecaea nubica, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, and Phialophora verrucosa. This drug combination could provide an option for the treatment of severe or unresponsive cases of CBM, particularly in cases due to species of Fonsecaea and Cladophialophora.
