Temperature regimes are changing at an unprecedented rate, leading to more intense, frequent, and prolonged extreme heat events. These conditions can undermine the performance of organisms during and after extreme events. Yet, our understanding of how different durations of extreme heat events impact the reproductive traits of soil invertebrates is limited. Here, we experimentally tested how exposure to extreme heat (30°C-26°C, day-night) affects the reproductive recovery of two Collembola species, Folsomia candida (parthenogenetic) and Proisotoma minuta (sexually reproducing), originally rear

Microalgae have been gaining attention for biotechnological purposes in different fields, such as food, energy, cosmetics, and bioremediation. However, due to habitat variation across the planet, there is still a scarcity of information on microalgae development in extreme environments, such as those with low temperatures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of growth stage and cold stress (5°C) on cell wall features, including ultrastructure, and main polysaccharides in three microalgal species from Northern Sweden: Coelastrella sp. 3-4, Chlorella vulgaris sp. 13-1, and Scene

The leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus) is a commercially significant tropical marine species. With the ongoing effects of global climate change, increasing attention has been focused on leopard coral grouper's susceptibility to extreme cold weather. This study investigates the effects of acute cold exposure and temperature recovery on the liver of P. leopardus. Histological observations and enzyme activity assays revealed that temperature fluctuations caused significant disruptions to normal liver physiology, including lipid accumulation and alterations in antioxidant levels. The microcirculation in the skin was assessed in 31 patients with sequelae from local cold injuries (LCI) in the extremities. All patients reported cold intolerance 3-4 years after the primary cold injury, which they sustained during military service. The used methods were laser Doppler fluxmetry, transcutaneous oxygen tension (TCpO2) and vital capillaroscopy. Neurovascular reflexes were stimulated by deep inspiration, digital cuff occlusion of venous and arterial circulation, neck cooling with an ice bag and water immersion at 5 and 15 degrees C. Unaffected lower or upper extremities were als

INTRODUCTION: Extreme winter cold in the Lancang River dry-hot valley limits vegetation establishment. Selecting cold-tolerant native species is therefore critical for ecological restoration and for maintaining stable agro-vegetation. This study aimed to assess cold tolerance in representative native shrubs and herbs using an integrated physiological and biochemical approach.
METHODS: Seedlings of three shrubs (Sophora davidii, Vitex negundo var. microphylla, Rumex hastatus) and two herbs (Arthraxon lanceolatus, Artemisia vestita) were exposed to temperatures from 25°C down to -35°C in growth

Xishuangbanna (XIS) cucumber (Cucumis sativus) originated from low-altitude southwest China and shows extreme cold sensitivity. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP), known for its high bioavailability and surface reactivity relative to bulk HAP, was applied to enhance the cold tolerance of XIS seedlings. We optimized fertilization timing and fertilizer concentration. By determining physiological parameters alongside gene expression profiling and transcriptomic analysis, we preliminarily dissected the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying nHAP-enhanced chilling tolerance. nHAP application pre

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a global crisis with profound social, psychological, and economic consequences, and it poses significant risks to human health including for neurological diseases. Children with epilepsy represent a particularly vulnerable population, as they may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of extreme temperatures. This project aims to determine the perceptions of heat-related seizure impacts for a population of children with epilepsy (CWE) and focuses particularly on the July-2024 heatwave experienced in Turkey.
METHODS: We conducted a face-to-face survey (n = 1

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasing health risks worldwide, but how extreme temperature events affect Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (ADD) remains poorly understood. We aimed to project future extreme temperature event-attributable ADD deaths in China, accounting for the combined effects of climate change, population ageing, and adaptation methods.
METHODS: We analysed 399,036 ADD deaths among adults aged ≥60 years in China during 2013-2020, using a time-stratified case-crossover design to estimate ADD mortality risks associated with extreme temperature events. We subsequently d

The environment can have a profound impact on human performance. Over the past decade there has been considerable interest in the scientific study of the human ability of to protect oneself against heat and cold. This new knowledge has led to a better understanding of physiology and resulted in better prevention, recognition, and treatment of hyperthermia, hypothermia, and frostbite. This article reviews the pathophysiology of extreme environmental exposure and discusses current strategies for prevention and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown the impact of heat and cold on total and age-specific mortality, but knowledge gaps remain regarding weather vulnerability of very young infants. This study assessed the association of temperature extremes with perinatal mortality (stillbirths and deaths in the first week of life), among two ethnic groups in pre-industrial northern Sweden.
METHODS: We used population data of indigenous Sami and non-Sami in selected parishes of northern Sweden, 1800-1895, and monthly temperature data. Multiple logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the associa

Extreme weather events and air pollution are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, posing complex challenges to human health. Although the adverse effects of these environmental stressors on cardiovascular disease are widely acknowledged, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This review examines these mechanisms from a physiological perspective, considering both pathways that act directly on the heart and those mediated through non-cardiac organs. Airborne particulate pollutants from dust storms, wildfires, and haze days can pass through the respiratory system and rea

OBJECTIVES: High and low ambient temperatures are associated with large numbers of deaths annually. Many studies show higher mortalities during heatwaves. However, such effects are rarely explicitly incorporated in models of temperature and mortality, although dehydration followed by cardiovascular stress is more likely to occur. The authors aim to establish time-series models in which the effects of persistent extreme temperature and temperature in general can be disentangled.
METHODS: The authors established time-series Poisson regression models based on cause-specific mortality and age-str

Extreme temperatures are now recognized as significant global health threats, driving morbidity and mortality across diverse diseases by compromising epithelial barrier integrity and causing periepithelial inflammation. The epithelial barrier theory posits that environmentally induced barrier dysfunction, driven by modern industrial and urban exposures, leads to compromised surfaces of the exposed tissues accompanied by epithelial activation and barrier dysfunction, microbial dysbiosis, loss of commensal bacteria, opportunistic pathogen colonization, bacterial translocation, inflammation and i

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors, particularly temperature-related exposures, are increasingly recognized as important determinants of tuberculosis (TB) disease progression and symptom manifestation. However, the evidence regarding the associations of heat exposure, cold exposure, and diurnal temperature range (DTR) with newly diagnosed TB remains limited and inconsistent.
METHODS: Data from Anhui Province between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2024 were analyzed using a two-stage analytical framework based on a time-stratified case-crossover study design. City-specific associations between

Winter in temperate and high latitudes imposes severe challenges for animal survival, associated with low ambient temperature and limited food availability. In some mammalian species, these challenges are met by hibernation, a state characterized by marked reduction in core temperature and metabolic activity. Despite these extreme conditions, hibernating mammals preserve cardiac function and avoid life-threatening arrhythmias and vascular failure. This review summarizes the current evidence on cardiovascular adaptations supporting survival during torpor, focusing on cardiac electrophysiology,

Tuberculosis can present with diverse manifestations, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Although cold abscesses can complicate spinal tuberculosis, subcutaneous abscesses due to tuberculosis are considerably uncommon and, unlike cold abscesses, necessitate surgical drainage.1 We present an extremely rare case of disseminated tuberculosis in a patient with subcutaneous involvement mimicking cellulitis.

Cold stress severely challenges the cardiovascular system under distinct physiological contexts: environmental cold exposure, systemic hypothermia, and donor heart cold preservation. Yet, hibernating mammals remarkably tolerate these extremes without evident injury, offering ideal models to decipher cardiac cold adaptation. Here, we induced hibernation in Syrian hamsters, a mammalian hibernator, under controlled cold stress (4 °C ambient, ∼5 °C body temperature). Notably, torpid Syrian hamsters exhibited reversible cardiac hypertrophy, a process verified to represent physiological rather than

For the bioremediation of contaminated sites, the efficiency of bioaugmentation depends on the survival capacity of introduced degradative strains in environmental settings. Many isolated strains exhibit poor activity after field application, primarily due to fluctuating environmental conditions, among which diurnal temperature variation represents a significant contributing factor. In this study, cold-adapted bacteria were implemented for biphenyl degradation under realistic environmental temperature fluctuations. The research employed a simplified isolation approach incorporating the limitin
