The bumpy road ahead: the role of substrate roughness on animal walking and a proposed comparative metric.

Outside laboratory conditions and human-made structures, animals rarely encounter flat surfaces. Instead, natural substrates are uneven surfaces with height variation that ranges from the microscopic scale to the macroscopic scale. For walking animals (which we define as encompassing any form of legged movement across the ground, such as walking, running, galloping, etc.), such substrate 'roughness' influences locomotion in a multitude of ways across scales, from roughness that influences how each toe or foot contacts the ground, to larger obstacles that animals must move over or navigate arou

Comparative Mitogenomic Analysis of Water Scavenger Beetles (Coleoptera: Hydrophiloidea) Provides Insights into Phylogeny and Adaptive Evolution.

Water scavenger beetles (Coleoptera: Hydrophiloidea) exhibit remarkable adaptations to both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and play irreplaceable ecological roles, yet their higher-level phylogeny and the molecular basis of their adaptive evolution remain unresolved. Here, we sequenced four complete mitogenomes of C. unipunctatus from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and conducted a comprehensive mitogenomic analysis by integrating these new data with 22 publicly available Hydrophiloidea mitogenomes, representing three families and six subfamilies. Our analyses revealed highly conserved mit

Magnetic artificial spores for robust interfacial biodesulfurization in pickering emulsions.

Whole-cell Pickering interfacial biocatalysis effectively overcomes the formidable mass-transfer limitations of hydrophobic substrates in aqueous systems. However, practical implementation is severely hindered by biocatalyst vulnerability under extreme industrial environments and the inherent challenge of post-reaction emulsion separation. Herein, the artificial spore concept is specifically adapted to overcome biodesulfurization bottlenecks by sequentially encapsulating Gordonia sp. WQ-01A cells with a conformal polydopamine layer and oleic acid-modified magnetic nanoparticles. The biomimetic

A Bioinspired 3D Tactile Force Sensor under Deep-Sea High Hydrostatic Pressure Environments for Underwater Robotic Adaptive Grasping.

Underwater tactile force sensing is crucial for achieving nondestructive and stable object manipulation in ocean robotics, especially in deep-sea environments where traditional vision-based methods are not available due to extreme darkness. However, deep-sea high hydrostatic pressure (>10 MPa) brings in serious interferences on tactile force measurements (<0.01 MPa), leading to few available deep-sea tactile sensors. To solve this problem, this paper develops a biomimetic deep-sea three-dimensional force sensor (3D-DSFS) inspired by the excellent adaptability of deep-sea organisms, where an op

[Progress of research on the potential impacts of extreme climates on the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis].

The frequent extreme climatic events post multifaceted impacts on the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in the context of global climate change. This article systematically reviews the effects of four types of extreme climatic events, including floods, droughts, heat waves, and cold waves, on the survival, reproduction, and distribution of Oncomelania hupensis. Floods may expand suitable snail habitats, and increase both emerging and re-emerging snail habitats; however, the impact of floods on O. hupensis density is characterized by a lag effe

Analysis of the transcription of genes encoding heat shock proteins (hsp) in Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, 1762 (Diptera: Culicidae), maintained under climatic conditions provided by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change) for the year 2100.

Human actions intensify the greenhouse effect, aggravating climate changes in the Amazon and elsewhere in the world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) foresees a global increase of up to 4.5 °C and 850 ppm CO2 (above current levels) by 2100. This will impact the biology of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, vector of Dengue, Zika, urban Yellow Fever and Chikungunya. Heat shock proteins are associated with adaptations to anthropic environments and the interaction of some viruses with the vector. The transcription of the hsp26, hsp83 and hsc70 genes of an A. aegypti population, maint

Highly sensitive and selective gas sensor using hydrophilic and hydrophobic graphenes.

New hydrophilic 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with various oxygen functional groups were employed to maintain high sensitivity in highly unfavorable environments (extremely high humidity, strong acidic or basic). Novel one-headed polymer optical fiber sensor arrays using hydrophilic GO and hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were carefully designed, leading to the selective sensing of volatile organic gases for the first time. The two physically different surfaces of GO and rGO could provide the sensing ability to distinguish between tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (MC), res

Microbial decaprenoxanthin: From understanding an extremophile-derived C50 carotenoid to its bioprocessing for large-scale applications.

Decaprenoxanthin (DPXT) is an unusual bacterial C50 carotenoid that has historically received limited attention despite its well-defined structure. For decades, carotenoid research and industrial development have been dominated by C40 carotenoids, leaving longer-chain carotenoids largely overlooked. Recent discoveries, particularly from microorganisms inhabiting Antarctic and other extreme environments, have repositioned DPXT as an adaptive pigment shaped by intense environmental pressures. Its extended polyene chain and membrane-associated behavior suggest roles in membrane stabilization and

Convergent evolution of reduced energy demands in extremophile fish.

Convergent evolution in organismal function can arise from nonconvergent changes in traits that contribute to that function. Theory predicts that low resource availability and high maintenance costs in extreme environments select for reductions in organismal energy demands, which could be attained through modifications of body size or metabolic rate. We tested for convergence in energy demands and underlying traits by investigating livebearing fish (genus Poecilia) that have repeatedly colonized toxic, hydrogen sulphide-rich springs. We quantified variation in body size and routine metabolism

Synthetic microbial communities for engineering climate-smart biofertilizers.

Global agricultural productivity is increasingly destabilized by climate change-driven droughts, floods, extreme heat, and severe storms. Although the climate-smart agriculture (CSA) framework addresses these challenges, implementation has focused mainly on plant genetics and agronomic inputs, leaving the adaptive potential of the crop microbiome underexplored. Here, we examine the agricultural use of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) through the "crop holobiont" concept, in which plants and their associated microbiota function as an integrated, responsive system rather than through pl

Exploring the chemical dynamics of phenanthrene (C14H10) formation via the bimolecular gas-phase reaction of the phenylethynyl radical (C6H5CC) with benzene (C6H6).

The exploration of the fundamental formation mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for the understanding of molecular mass growth processes leading to two- and three-dimensional carbonaceous nanostructures (nanosheets, graphenes, nanotubes, buckyballs) in extraterrestrial environments (circumstellar envelopes, planetary nebulae, molecular clouds) and combustion systems. While key studies have been conducted exploiting traditional, high-temperature mechanisms such as the hydrogen abstraction-acetylene addition (HACA) and phenyl addition-dehydrocyclization (PAC) pathwa

Ice Converts Phenols into Persistent Mineral-Bound Polymers.

Freezing fundamentally alters how minerals transform dissolved phenols in cold environments. As water freezes, solutes are excluded from the crystal lattice and concentrated into microscopic pockets of unfrozen liquid, creating reaction conditions far more extreme than those of bulk solution. Here, we compare catechol oxidation on a key soil manganese oxide under freeze-thaw versus room-temperature conditions. Freezing redirects products from soluble humic-like substances to thermally stable, mineral-bound polymers. Freeze-thaw conditions removed over 50% of dissolved organic carbon within 24

Tailored Hierarchical Bonding Networks Derive Ultra-Stable Underwater Adhesion in Harsh Environments.

The development of high-performance water-resistant and underwater adhesives is critical for advancing underwater technologies, yet achieving robust functional adhesion with long-term durability in complex underwater environments remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a hierarchical bonding network strategy to realize stable adhesion under harsh underwater conditions. By engineering a cross-linked polysiloxane backbone embedded with dense active interaction sites, including hydroxyl groups, benzene rings, cations, and hydrophobic moieties, we create synergistic multiscale interactio

Neural Processing without O2 and Glucose Delivery: Lessons from the Pond to the Clinic.

Neuronal activity requires a large amount of ATP, leading to a rapid collapse of brain function when aerobic respiration fails. Here, we summarize how rhythmic motor circuits in the brain stem of adult frogs, which normally have high metabolic demands, transform to produce proper output during severe hypoxia associated with emergence from hibernation. We suggest that general principles underlying plasticity in brain bioenergetics may be uncovered by studying nonmammalian models that face extreme environments, yielding new insights to combat neurological disorders involving dysfunctional energy

Genomic prospecting and biochemical characterization of a novel thermostable 3-quinuclidinone reductase from hot spring metagenomes for efficient biocatalysis.

This study presents the discovery and characterization of a novel thermophilic 3-quinuclidinone reductase (ScQR) identified through metagenomic mining of hot spring environments. ScQR, a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily, was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, and its catalytic properties were systematically characterized. The enzyme demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, retaining 86% of its activity after 48 hours at 70°C. Furthermore, K+ and Mg²+ ions significantly enhanced ScQR's activity at specific concentrations. Structural analysis reve

SeADL: Self-Adaptive Deep Learning for Real-Time Marine Visibility Forecasting Using Multi-Source Sensor Data.

Accurate prediction of marine visibility is critical for ensuring safe and efficient maritime operations, particularly in dynamic and data-sparse ocean environments. Although visibility reduction is a natural and unavoidable atmospheric phenomenon, improved short-term prediction can substantially enhance navigational safety and operational planning. While deep learning methods have demonstrated strong performance in land-based visibility prediction, their effectiveness in marine environments remains constrained by the lack of fixed observation stations, rapidly changing meteorological conditio

Measurement of β-nuclides in various solutions using plastic scintillation microspheres.

BACKGROUND: Scintillation cocktails cannot directly measure samples with extreme acidity or alkalinity in β-nuclide liquid scintillation analysis. Plastic scintillation microspheres (PSm), as a novel scintillation material, offer the potential to overcome these limitations by allowing direct mixing with a variety of solutions for measurement, particularly in challenging chemical environments. RESULTS: This study evaluated the performance of PSm in various chemical environments, including four acids (nitric, hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids), an alkaline solution (NaOH), a high-sal

An observational study on glycemic trajectories during ascent, stay, and descent in a 45-day high-altitude exposure.

AIMS: To characterize glycemic dynamics and heterogeneity in response patterns during a 45-day high-altitude expedition among healthy adults. METHODS: In this longitudinal observational study, eight healthy adults underwent continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) during ascent (2,800 to 4,531 m), stay, and descent. Glycemic metrics (mean glucose, variability indices, time-in-range) were analyzed across altitude-defined phases. Unsupervised clustering was employed to identify glycemic response patterns. RESULTS: Mean glucose exhibited a mild U-shaped trend, with transient elevation and peak glyce

Hot life in Antarctica: a novel metabolically versatile Pyrodictiaceae genus thriving at a volcanic-cryosphere-marine interface.

Deception Island fumaroles in Antarctica represent rare environments where extreme heat intersects with cryospheric and marine conditions, creating remarkable environmental gradients. From the near-boiling sediments, we reconstructed a high-quality metagenome-assembled genome affiliated with the Pyrodictiaceae. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that this genome, proposed to represent Ca. Pyroantarcticum pellizari, forms a distinct lineage separated from known genera in the family. Functional annotation uncovered a versatile metabolic repertoire, including pathways for sulfur and nitrogen cycling,
