Malawi's population, predominantly engaged in rain-fed agriculture and outdoor labor, faces increasing heat stress risks under climate change. This study characterizes historical heat stress at 22 stations (2000-2023) using ERA5 reanalysis and seven complementary thermo-physiological indices, establishing an evidence-based baseline for climate-health adaptation planning. Validation against station observations confirms ERA5 reliability with a conservative cool bias. Bangula (Nsanje) in the Lower Shire Valley emerges as the extreme heat hotspot, with maximum UTCI reaching 48.44°C and "very stro

The extreme heat wave in Australia in 2009 resulted in significantly increased number of daily deaths. The circumstances that lead to deaths during extreme heat have not been explored before in Australia. This study aims to identify the individual and community risk factors for deaths during this extreme heat wave in Adelaide. A matched case-control study was conducted. Cases were those who died in the Adelaide metropolitan area during the heat wave period. For each case, two community controls were randomly selected, matched by age and gender. Face-to-face or telephone interviews were conduct

INTRODUCTION: During the summer of 2021, western Canada experienced a historic and deadly extreme heat event. Simultaneously, toxic drug use and overdoses related to high-risk use of opioids and polysubstance use continued to rise across the country. However, the combined impacts of these intersecting public health crises remain poorly understood as relevant data sources are limited in Canada.
METHODS: We explored news media articles (n = 86, 3%) discussing toxic drug use, overdose-related deaths and the 2021 Heat Dome which were identified in a systematic review of Canadian online news media

BACKGROUND: Prevailing scientific evidence suggests that extreme heat poses a substantial threat to the health and well-being of older adults in the Sunbelt cities of the United States. However, prior research has not adequately addressed the specific socio-demographic, health-related vulnerabilities, and coping-strategic factors influencing heat stress among older urban populations.
METHODS: Informed by the Socio-Ecological Model, this study adopts a retrospective cohort study design to investigate the predictors and experiences of heat stress among older adults. Data from older adults in Lo

Body size of organisms is a key trait influencing nearly all aspects of their life history. Despite growing evidence of Bergmann's rule, there is considerably less known about the links between body size and the maximum capacity to thermoregulate of an animal in response to extreme cold or hot environment. Thermal characteristics such as resting metabolic rate (RMR) and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), and the upper- and lower-critical temperatures of the thermal neutral zone (TNZ) were investigated in small and large body sized striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis). The maximum capacity

Approximately 400 people die from extreme heat each year in the United States, and the risk of heat waves may increase as a result of global climate change. Despite the risk of heat-related morbidity and mortality, many cities lack written heat response plans. In a review of plans from 18 cities at risk for heat-related mortality, we found that many cities had inadequate or no heat response plans. This is an important area for further investigation and government attention.

As temperatures continue to modify due to weather changes, more regions are being exposed to extreme heat and cold. Physiological distress due to low and high temperatures can affect the heart, blood vessels, liver, and especially, the kidneys. Dehydration causes impaired cell function and heat itself triggers cellular stress. The decline in circulating plasma volume by sweat, which stresses the renal and cardiovascular systems, has been related to some molecules that are crucial players in preventing or provoking cellular damage. Hypovolemia and blood redistribution to cutaneous blood vessels

Research on interactions between halophytes and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) has expanded in recent years; however, species-specific and stress-dependent responses remain poorly understood, particularly under extreme salinity and temperature. To address this gap, we conducted two complementary greenhouse experiments using two perennial halophytes with contrasting ecological traits, Arthrocaulon macrostachyum and Atriplex portulacoides. Plants were exposed to three conditions: control (171 mM NaCl; 16/25 °C), extreme salinity stress (1030 mM NaCl; 16/25 °C for 7 days), and extreme hea

Environmental exposure to high temperatures can result in abnormalities ranging from mild heat exhaustion to heat stroke with multiorgan system failure. An understanding of the mechanisms of thermoregulation and how those mechanisms fail with extreme heat stress is critical for management of the patient with elevated body temperature in the emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is the deadliest of all weather-related hazards, yet also the most preventable. To boost heat preparedness and response, officials need information on where heat-related health issues concentrate and how risks vary by demographic, social, environmental, and infrastructural factors. We present a tool for heat-health vulnerability assessments, called ClimaWATCH, which links large, diverse data to summarize county, state, and national exposure to heatwaves; susceptibility based on various factors; and heat-related health burdens.

Measuring the thermal limits of insects is crucial for understanding how thermoregulatory behavior and thermal tolerance interact with the environment. A key question is the maximal temperature terrestrial animals can endure and how plastic these limits are under extreme conditions. Lepismatids are a basal group of insects with remarkable diversity in arid habitats, making them promising candidates for extreme thermoresistance, yet their thermal ecology remains largely unexplored. We present the first experimental evaluation of acclimation effects on voluntary (VTmax), critical (CTmax), and up

OBJECTIVES: In the summer of 2021, the Canadian province of British Columbia (B.C.) experienced an unprecedented extreme heat event, which resulted in 619 heat-related deaths across the province (Henderson et al., 2022). This evaluation aims to assess the sensitivity and specificity of a surveillance algorithm to identify heat illness-related emergency department (ED) visits during this period, as well as to explore the impact of adjusting the case definition to enhance algorithm performance.
METHODS: A chart review of ED visits across a regional health authority in B.C. during the 2021 perio

Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat stress. Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. On the other hand, local and regional heat therapy has been used for the treatment of some cancers, such as liver cancer, lung cancer, and kidney cancer. Although heat stress has been shown to induce the accumulation of p53 protein, a key regulator of cell cycle, apoptosis, DNA repair, and autophagy, how it regulates p53 protein accumulation and what the p53 targets are remain unclear. Here, we show that, among various ge

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes substantial morbidity globally, with frequent outbreaks in low-resource settings due to fecal-oral transmission. Temperature and extreme heat may influence waterborne pathogens, but their impact on HEV risk is unclear.
METHODS: We performed a time-stratified case-crossover study using 42,481 laboratory-confirmed hepatitis E cases reported in Jiangsu Province (2010-2023). Daily mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures were obtained from fixed-site monitoring data. We examined associations of short-term temperature (single-day and cumulative lags up to

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses severe health risks to people with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), particularly from extreme heat events. People living with schizophrenia had three-fold higher mortality during the 2021 heat dome event in British Columbia. Multiple factors increase vulnerability, including thermoregulation impairment from neuroleptic medications and neurobiological changes, cognitive symptoms affecting risk comprehension, social isolation, comorbid physical conditions, housing instability, and barriers to accessing cooling resources due to stigma and poverty.

Background: Rising temperatures and the frequency of heat waves are challenges that have an impact on the health and mortality of populations. A high level of greenness is emerging as a strategy to mitigate the effects of extreme heat. Objective: To assess whether higher levels of greenness are associated with reduced mortality compared with lower greenness during periods of extreme heat. Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE, CINHAL, Environment Complete, and GreenFILE. Observational studies were included. In the last few decades extreme heat events have led to substantial excess mortality, most dramatically in Central Europe in 2003, in Russia in 2010, and even in typically cool locations such as Vancouver, Canada, in 2009. Heat-related morbidity and mortality is expected to increase over the coming centuries as the result of climate-driven global increases in the severity and frequency of extreme heat events. Spatial information on heat exposure and population vulnerability may be combined to map the areas of highest risk and focus mitigation efforts there. However, a mismatch in spatial resol

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe condition characterized by a sudden decline of kidney function with a high mortality rate and healthcare costs. While extreme heat is a recognized risk factor for AKI, the effects of both heat and cold exposure across different demographics remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between ambient temperatures and AKI emergency hospitalizations, with a focus on age and sex differences.
METHODS: Using a nationwide database, we identified 119,027 AKI emergency hospitalizations from 2011 to 2019. A space-time-stratified case-crossove

BACKGROUND: Heatwaves are the deadliest extreme weather events, and their frequency and intensity are rising under anthropogenic climate change. In summer 2025 alone, an estimated 24,400 heat-related deaths occurred across 854 European cities, ∼68% attributable to human-induced warming. The cardiovascular system is disproportionately affected, yet the interplay between thermal stress, environmental pollutants, and individual autonomic vulnerability remains incompletely characterised.
OBJECTIVES: To synthesise evidence on: (1) the epidemiological burden of heatwave-related cardiovascular morta
