Development and validation of machine learning-based risk prediction models for ICU-acquired weakness: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness (ICUAW) is a prevalent complication in critically ill patients, marked by symmetrical respiratory and limb muscle weakness, which adversely affects long-term outcomes. Early identification of high-risk patients and prevention are essential to mitigate its impact. Traditional risk prediction models, based on cohort data, have limitations in addressing the complex, non-linear relationships among diverse risk factors due to patient heterogeneity and the dynamic nature of critical illness. Machine learning offers a promising alternative by in

A machine learning approach for predicting urine output after fluid administration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To develop a machine learning model to predict urine output (UO) in sepsis patients after fluid resuscitation. METHODS: We identified sepsis patients in the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care-III v1.4 database according to the Sepsis-3 criteria. We focused on two outcomes: whether the UO decreased after fluid administration and whether oliguria (defined as UO less than the threshold of 0.5 mL/kg/h) developed. A gradient tree-based machine learning model implemented with an eXtreme Gradient Boosting algorithm was used to integrate relevant physiol

Predicting Antidepressant Treatment Response From Cortical Structure on MRI: A Mega-Analysis From the ENIGMA-MDD Working Group.

Accurately predicting individual antidepressant treatment response could expedite the lengthy trial-and-error process of finding an effective treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). We tested and compared machine learning-based methods that predict individual-level pharmacotherapeutic treatment response using cortical morphometry from multisite longitudinal cohorts. We conducted an international analysis of pooled data from six sites of the ENIGMA-MDD consortium (n = 262 MDD patients; age = 36.5 ± 15.3 years; 154 (59%) female; mean response rate = 57%). Treatment response was defined as

IdentiARAT: Toward Automated Identification of Individual ARAT Items from Wearable Sensors.

This study explores the potential of using wrist-worn inertial sensors to automate the labeling of ARAT (Action Research Arm Test) items. While the ARAT is commonly used to assess upper limb motor function, its limitations include subjectivity and time consumption of clinical staff. By using IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors and MiniROCKET as a time series classification technique, this investigation aims to classify ARAT items based on sensor recordings. We test common preprocessing strategies to efficiently leverage included information in the data. Afterward, we use the best preproces

Machine learning in time-lapse imaging to differentiate embryos from young vs old mice†.

Time-lapse microscopy for embryos is a non-invasive technology used to characterize early embryo development. This study employs time-lapse microscopy and machine learning to elucidate changes in embryonic growth kinetics with maternal aging. We analyzed morphokinetic parameters of embryos from young and aged C57BL6/NJ mice via continuous imaging. Our findings show that aged embryos accelerated through cleavage stages (from 5-cells) to morula compared to younger counterparts, with no significant differences observed in later stages of blastulation. Unsupervised machine learning identified two

Developing risk-decision rules for aeration in wastewater treatment plants using copula-enhanced machine learning with feature smoothing.

Operational instability in biological wastewater treatment systems can lead to inefficient aeration and elevated energy consumption. Accurate prediction of key process variables, including ammonia nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), is essential for maintaining stable nitrification and energy-efficient aeration control. However, imbalanced data distributions and rare abnormal events often reduce model robustness. To address this challenge, this study develops an integrated predictive and risk assessment framework that incorporates feature distribution smo

An optimized XGBoost-based machine learning method for predicting wave run-up on a sloping beach.

Accurate and computationally efficient prediction of wave run-up is required to mitigate the impacts of inundation and erosion caused by tides, storm surges, and even tsunami waves. The conventional methods for calculating wave run-up involve physical experiments or numerical modeling. Machine learning methods have recently become a part of wave run-up model development due to their robustness in dealing with large and complex data. In this paper, an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)-based machine learning method is introduced for predicting wave run-up on a sloping beach. More than 400 labo
