Learning Gaze Synthesizer via 3D-Eye Controlled Diffusion and Cross-Domain Feature Alignment.

Appearance-based supervised methods with full-face image input have made tremendous advances in recent gaze estimation tasks. However, intensive human annotation requirement inhibits current methods from achieving industrial level accuracy and robustness. Although methods based on generative AI can synthesize eye images to expand self-annotated eye data, these methods usually have limited model capacity and cannot effectively inject gaze information, resulting in poor quality, monotonous texture, and inaccurate gaze direction of the generated eye images. To alleviate the above challenge, we pr

Infants' individual sensitivity to saliency shapes early word learning in social interaction.

In this paper, we conducted an extended analysis of an existing eye-tracking study (Wildt, 2023) investigating how infants' individual sensitivity to saliency shapes early word learning in social interaction. In a first phase of the study, 10-month-old infants participated in a saliency test for their attention. We used existing baseline data but applied a new analysis approach to model infants' attentional profiles-high and low preference group for salient stimuli. Afterwards, infants were exposed to the label of the referent and then participated in one of the two conditions of exploring it:

Evaluation of data collection and annotation approaches of driver gaze dataset.

Driver gaze estimation is important for various driver gaze applications such as building advanced driving assistance systems and understanding driver gaze behavior. Gaze estimation in terms of gaze zone classification requires large-scale labeled data for supervised machine learning and deep learning-based models. In this study, we collected a driver gaze dataset and annotated it using three annotation approaches - manual annotation, Speak2Label, and moving pointer-based annotation. Moving pointer-based annotation was introduced as a new data annotation approach inspired by screen-based gaze

Comparison of Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) and Computerized Eye-tracking to Identify Exposure to Repetitive Head Impacts.

INTRODUCTION: Military service members (SMs) are exposed to repetitive head impacts (RHIs) in combat and training that are purported to adversely affect brain health, including cognition, behavior, and function. Researchers have reported that RHI from blast-related exposure may affect both vestibular and ocular function, which in turn may be related to symptomology. As such, an examination of the effects of RHI on exposed military SMs should incorporate these domains. To date, researchers have not compared groups of exposed special operations forces (SOF) operators on combined clinical vestibu

An intensive eye-tracking intervention in children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy: a multiple case study.

This study aimed to explore the effects of a four-week intensive eye-tracking intervention on children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP), focusing on goal attainment, communication competencies, stress levels, subjective workload, and caregivers' perception of psychosocial impact. A multiple case study design with non-concurrent, staggered multiple baselines was employed, involving three children aged 7, 12, and 13 years. The study included a randomized baseline period of two or three weeks, an intensive eye-tracking intervention, and a six-month follow-up. Two individual eye-tracking goals

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation modulates eye gaze on emotional faces in college students with alexithymia: An eye-tracking study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical eye gaze on emotional faces is a core feature of alexithymia. The inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) is considered to be the neurophysiological basis of alexithymia-related emotional face fixation. Our aim was to examine whether anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) administered to the right (r)IFG would facilitate eye gaze of emotional faces in alexithymia individuals. METHOD: Forty individuals with alexithymia were equally assigned to anodal or sham HD-tDCS of the rIFG according to the principle of randomization. The individuals then complet

Eye-Tracking Studies in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Eye-tracking studies have shown potential in effectively discriminating between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and non-ASD groups. The main objective of the present study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of eye-tracking studies in adults with ASD. A total of 22 studies were included for meta-analysis. Eyes and Non-Social regions proved better for discriminating between ASD and non-ASD adults, while fixation duration seems to be the outcome to choose. Active engaged tasks seem to reduce differences between ASD and non-ASD adults, regardless of the emotional content of the st

Eating disorder-specific rumination moderates the association between attentional bias to high-calorie foods and eating disorder symptoms: Evidence from a reliable free-viewing eye-tracking task.

Cognitive theories of eating disorders implicate Attentional Bias (AB) towards food-related information in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. Empirical evidence for this proposal, however, has been inconsistent, and the measures used to examine AB to food-related stimuli typically showed poor reliability. The aim of the current study was twofold. Firstly, we aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a newly devised eye-tracking task for the assessment of AB in the context of eating disorders. Secondly, we examined the role of Eating Disorder-specific (ED-specific) rumin

Clinical relevance of attentional biases in pediatric chronic pain: an eye-tracking study.

Attentional biases have been posited as one of the key mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of chronic pain and co-occurring internalizing mental health symptoms. Despite this theoretical prominence, a comprehensive understanding of the nature of biased attentional processing in chronic pain and its relationship to theorized antecedents and clinical outcomes is lacking, particularly in youth. This study used eye-tracking to assess attentional bias for painful facial expressions and its relationship to theorized antecedents of chronic pain and clinical outcomes. Youth with chro

Correction for the pupil size artifact improves the measurement of fixation drift with a head-mounted pupil tracker.

The exactness of pupil-based video-oculography (pVOG) is limited by the pupil size artifact (PSA), involving shifts in pupil position with changes in pupil diameter. This study investigates PSA's effects on fixation drift measurement and compares two correction methods. The first, the "interpolation method," creates calibrations for different pupil sizes by adjusting illumination and interpolating between them based on the current pupil diameter. The second, the "regression method," uses natural fluctuations in pupil size during fixation to estimate PSA gain via regression, then corrects pupil

Seizing Learning Opportunities in Everyday Life: Infants Are Attentive During Non-Child-Directed Activity.

Infants' early learning is fast and efficient. Most research on infant learning from social contexts has focused on child-directed activities, such as toy play. However, learning in everyday contexts may not be limited to child-directed activities. Routines at home consist of other activities, such as meal preparation, laundry, and chores, that may still offer learning opportunities for infants. But infants can only learn from these moments if they are paying attention. Here, we provide the first examination of infant attention during non-child-directed everyday activity. In a home-like labora

Vision Transformer attention alignment with human visual perception in aesthetic object evaluation.

Visual attention mechanisms play a crucial role in human perception and aesthetic evaluation. Recent advances in Vision Transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in computer vision tasks, yet their alignment with human visual attention patterns remains underexplored, particularly in aesthetic contexts. This study investigates the correlation between human visual attention and ViT attention mechanisms when evaluating handcrafted objects. We conducted an eye-tracking experiment with 30 participants (9 female, 21 male, mean age 24.6 years) who viewed 20 artisanal objects compr

Screening efficiency over experience: Rapid target detection in low-power field as a modifiable cognitive biomarker for diagnostic accuracy in digital cytology.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, cytology expertise has been equated with professional experience. However, the transition to whole-slide imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) necessitates a shift from exhaustive screening to rapid verification. The goal of this study was to identify cognitive biomarkers associated with diagnostic accuracy and evaluate their modifiability. METHODS: In phase 1, 100 cytotechnologists with 1-40 years of experience diagnosed 30 digital cytology images using eye-tracking. Gaze metrics across areas of interest were analyzed via nominal logistic regression. In phase 2,

Examining anxiety in machine translation post-editing: A multimethod approach using eye-tracking and psychometric testing.

This paper presents a multimethod research design to investigate anxiety in machine translation post-editing (MTPE) and its potential relationship with pupil dilation and visual attention distribution. It compares data from 20 translation students and 18 professional translators performing MTPE with Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) and Neural Machine Translation (NMT) output. Although pupil dilation has been used in Cognitive Translation and Interpreting Studies (CTIS), primarily as an index of cognitive effort, its use as a potential indicator of anxiety-related arousal during MTPE remai

Gaze and gait dynamics are shaped by terrain type during urban walking.

The structure of the environment fundamentally shapes how humans see and move. Walking through the city requires the continuous coordination of eyes, head, and body movements, revealing the active role of perception in guiding locomotion. Here, we used wearable eye-tracking, foot-mounted inertial sensors, and GPS to examine how terrain type modulates gaze behaviour and locomotor dynamics during naturalistic urban walking. Twenty young adults walked along routes comprising flat pavements, cobblestones, and dirt paths while their gaze, head orientation, and gait were recorded. Gaze behaviour var

Contribution of Phonological Information to Lexical Access in School-Age Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: This study explores the interplay of phonological and lexical processing in children, focusing on whether German-speaking school-age children with cochlear implants (CIs) use phonological information for lexical access in the same way as their peers with typical hearing (TH). The study aimed at understanding how different phonological contrasts between a target and a phonological competitor affect lexical access when this acoustic information is less available, as is the case with CIs. METHOD: Using an eye-tracking visual-world paradigm, we hypothesized that lexical access would diff

Computer-aided autism diagnosis using visual attention models and eye-tracking: replication and improvement proposal.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis can be aided by approaches based on eye-tracking signals. Recently, the feasibility of building Visual Attention Models (VAMs) from features extracted from visual stimuli and their use for classifying cases and controls has been demonstrated using Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines. The present work has three aims: 1) to evaluate whether the trained classifier from the previous study was generalist enough to classify new samples with a new stimulus; 2) to replicate the previously approach to train a new classifier with a new dataset

Associations of an eye-tracking task and pupillary metrics with age and ASA physical status score in a preoperative cohort.

Advanced age, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA) classification and the presence of cognitive impairment are associated with an elevated risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality. The visual paired comparison (VPC) task, which relies on recognition of novel images, examines declarative memory. VPC scores have demonstrated the ability to detect mild cognitive impairment and track progression of neurodegenerative disease. Quantitative pupillometry may have similar value.
