Synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25) is involved in the molecular regulation of neurotransmitter release. SNAP-25 exists in two isoforms, SNAP-25a and SNAP-25b, which arise from alternate splicing and which are differentially expressed throughout the nervous system. In situ hybridization was used to examine the presence and subcellular localization of SNAP-25a and SNAP-25b RNA transcript expression in motor and parasympathetic nuclei associated with cranial nerves. SNAP-25a RNA transcripts were strongly expressed in the parasympathetic Edinger-Westphal nucleus and dorsal motor n

Sensory information arising from the upper neck is important in the reflex control of posture and eye position. It has also been linked to the autonomic control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and cervical dystonia, which involve disturbance to the neck region, can often present with abnormalities to the oromotor, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. We investigated the potential neural pathways underlying such symptoms. Simulating neck afferent activity by electrical stimulation of the second cervical nerve in a working heart brainstem pre

Affective priming refers to the phenomenon that subliminal presentation of facial emotion biases subsequent evaluation of a neutral object in the direction of the prime. The aim of the present study was to specify the neural correlates of evaluative shifts elicited by facial emotion shown below the threshold of conscious perception. We tested the hypotheses whether the amygdala is involved in negative priming, whereas the nucleus accumbens participates in positive priming. In addition, exploratory whole brain correlation analyses were conducted. During 3T fMRI scanning, pictures of sad, happy,

In this short case-illustrated review we aimed to analyse the possible nuances of hemifacial spasm (HFS) as the presenting symptom of a tumour of the fourth ventricle. The issue is remarkable since HFS can be secondary to a fourth ventricle tumour, even when no other neurological signs are reported. In addition, the possible presentation with only upper facial muscle involvement, as in the presented case, can be deceitful because this is characteristic of the benign and much more frequent "typical" form. Based on our intra-operative data and on the previously reported cases, we think that path

We report an autopsy case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinically diagnosed as spinal progressive muscular atrophy (SPMA). The patient was a Japanese woman without hereditary burden. She developed muscle weakness of the distal part of the left lower extremity at age 42, followed by muscle weakness and atrophy of the right lower extremity and upper extremities. At age 57, she needed transient ventilatory support. Slight weakness in the facial muscles and fasciculation of the tongue appeared at age 60. At age 61, she died of sudden respiratory arrest. During the clinical course, neurol

For further study of the effects of the repairment of facial nerve with vein tubulation, we used horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde mark method to observe the changes of the labeled cells in facial neucleus after the tubulation of rat facial nerve. And, we compared the changes with nerve graft in situ and the normal group. The results showed: 1. The vein tubulatiton can repair the short defect of facial nerve as well as the nerve graft does. 2. Irregular outgrowth of axon sprouts could be found in both methods. 3. There was few chance for homolateral target organ to be reinnervated by con

The occurrence and distribution of monoamine-(MA) containing neurons and fibres in the brain of Carassius was investigated by formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF) histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp technique). Many brightly green-fluorescent nerve cell perikarya were found in the nucleus dorsolateralis and ventromedialis, in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis, in the nucleus recessus lateralis and posterioris. They also occurred in the mesencephalic nucleus lateralis valvulae, in the metencephalic nucleus gustatorius secundus and near the ventricular borders of the facial and vagal lobes

The role of internuclear neurons residing in the medial rectus subdivision of the oculomotor nucleus and projecting to the abducens nucleus is poorly understood. As a step toward remedying this, we labeled this projection in macaque monkeys by injecting the oculomotor nucleus with anterograde tracers. Labeled terminal arbors present within the main body of the abducens nucleus were diffusely distributed and mainly directed at motoneurons. However, a dense terminal field was present along the dorsomedial aspect of the nucleus, designated the infragenual region, and immediately dorsal to the fac

OBJECTIVE: To determine the roles of axoplasmic transportation during regeneration after facial nerve injury.
METHOD: Facial nucleus injection and isotopic-label tracer with liquid scintillation counting techniques were used to investigate the changes of radioactivity after guinea pig facial nerve compressed.
RESULT: Axoplasmic transportation was observed again at 3 d after facial nerve injury, and the function recovered until 14 d. At 21 d after injury, it showed that transportation curve of radiolabeled protein was similar with that of the normal. There was particular curve in slow axoplas

Facial paralysis presents as unilateral mouth drooping and lagophthalmos. The main causes of peripheral facial paralysis are Bell's palsy and Ramsay-Hunt syndrome. However, rarely occurring pontine infarctions of the facial nucleus also manifest a lower motor neuron pattern of facial paralysis. We report a case of a man in his 50s who presented to the emergency department with unilateral peripheral facial paralysis. The initial diffusion-weighted images were unremarkable, and the patient was managed as per guidelines for hypertensive encephalopathy or Bell's palsy. On the 3rd day after admissi

BACKGROUND: Because of ease of harvest and low immunogenicity, xenogeneic acellular nerve graft (XANG) may be an alternative to autologous nerve to repair facial nerve defects.
METHODS: Facial nerve defects of Wistar rats were repaired by XANG, and nerve gap regeneration was investigated by electrophysiological test, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde tracing and histomorphometric analysis, as compared to autograft.
RESULTS: Twenty weeks after the grafting, electrophysiology showed that whisker pad muscles responded to the electrical stimuli given at the site proximal to the transplanta

OBJECTIVE: In patients with hemifacial spasm, stimulation of a branch of the affected facial nerve elicits an abnormal response in the muscles innervated by another branch. We tested the hypothesis that this anomaly results from lateral spread of impulses from one motor axon to another at the site of the nerve compression by the offending artery.
METHODS: In a preoperative study of 21 patients, we delivered a series of stimuli, in short increments, successively distally along the temporal branch of the facial nerve to record abnormal muscle responses from the orbicularis oculi and mentalis mu

We have localized muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the rat brainstem by a light microscopic autoradiographic method. Initially, we examined the kinetics and specificity of the binding of radiolabeled quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) in slide-mounted, frozen tissue sections to determine that we were labeling the muscarinic cholinergic receptors as they had been described previously in biochemical pharmacological studies. Subsequently, using optimal binding parameters to obtain high specific to nonspecific ratios, we labeled tissue sections and generated autoradiograms by the apposition of e

It has been previously demonstrated that transglutaminase activity in rat superior cervical ganglion is rapidly and transiently increased minutes after nerve injury. The present series of experiments sought to determine: (1) whether or not similar changes are expressed by other peripheral neuronal systems, and (2) if injury-induced changes in the enzyme activity can be detected along the injured nerve, and if so do they occur in axons or in non-neuronal cells. In the nodose ganglion transglutaminase activity increased (approximately 40%) 48 h after the vagus nerve was crushed 25 mm from the ga

We report an unusual finding of bilateral facial and corporeal diaphoresis and sensation of heat during deep brain stimulation in two patients. Stimulation of the hypothalamospinal tract located medial to the subthalamic nucleus is likely to be responsible for this side effect.

Neurons that provide the efferent innervation of the inner ear and lateral line were located in the brain by applying horseradish peroxidase to appropriate cranial nerves. The efferent neurons are found in a rhombencephalic nucleus, called here the octavolateralis efferent nucleus, which lies at the rostral pole of the visceromotor column. Up to 40% of these neurons are contralateral. The location of efferent cells is not topographically related to the sense organs they innervate. Their axons leave the brain together with other motor axons in the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves and there is

Astrocyte activation is a ubiquitous hallmark of the damaged brain and has been suggested to play an important regulatory role in the activation, survival, and regeneration of adjacent neurons, microglia, and oligodendrocytes. Little is known, however, about the endogenous signals that lead to this activation of astrocytes. Here we examined the regulation of interleukin 6 (IL6), a proinflammatory cytokine, its receptors, and the effects of IL6-deficiency in a model of traumatic central nervous system injury in the axotomized mouse facial motor nucleus. Facial nerve transection led to a massive

The cerebellar output can trigger whisker movement through indirect projections that pass via several brainstem pre-motor nuclei before reaching the facial nucleus, which directly controls whisker movements in rodents. Although the central pattern generator function of the intermediate reticular formation has been recently clarified, the roles of the other whisker pre-motor nuclei remain unclear. Here, we set out to compare the whisker movement kinematics of the main pre-motor whisker nuclei connecting the cerebellum and the facial nucleus. We optogenetically stimulated neurons located in the
