Famine and starvation have punctuated the evolutionary past of the human species. As such, we have developed hormonal responses to undernutrition that minimize energy expenditure on processes that are not critical for the survival of the individual, such as reproduction. In this review, we discuss neuroendocrine adaptations to starvation including hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, growth hormone resistance, hypercortisolemia, and the downregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. We review the time-course of these adaptations by describing studies involving the short-term fasting of h

Epidemic diseases in the early Choson period were big problems to the people and society. However, the weapons to the epidemic diseases were very limited at that time. There were few drugs and well-trained practitioners for people. Most people could only depend on religious means and simple folklore medicine including inhalation of specific flavor. People tried to overcome or prevent the epidemics by praying, sorcery, ornaments, runaway and isolation. In most cases, the epidemic diseases came with or broke out from the famine, severe labour (especially in civil engineering) imposed by the ruli

The meaning of population pressure is discussed and, with the help of a formula, its five main components (people, rate of increase of people, food-producing acreage, protein nutrition and industrialization) are analyzed.Factors which have eased population pressure in the past are considered under the headings of political violence (war and genocide), natural disaster (famine and disease), and social action (increased local protein supply, emigration, industrialization and birth control).Birth control is the first prerequisite to an easing of population pressure; the effectiveness of the Japan

This article surveys some examples of the ways past societies have responded to environmental stressors such as famine, war, and pandemic. We show that people in the past did think about system recovery, but only on a sectoral scale. They did perceive challenges and respond appropriately, but within cultural constraints and resource limitations. Risk mitigation was generally limited in scope, localized, and again determined by cultural logic that may not necessarily have been aware of more than symptoms, rather than actual causes. We also show that risk-managing and risk-mitigating arrangement

It is suggested that the symptoms of anorexia nervosa are physiological responses to starvation. There is no evidence of a neural or non-neural dysfunction that predisposes women for anorexia nervosa and the endocrine and psychological consequences of starvation are reversed once patients have re-learnt how to eat and regained a normal body weight. Because variability in the supply of food may be a common evolutionary condition, it is more likely that body weight is variable than constant in normal circumstances. The role of the neuroendocrine system in times of feast and famine is to allow th

Few infectious diseases have influenced human civilization to the same degree as louse-transmitted typhus. Rickettsia prowazekii continues to strikes tens to hundreds of thousands of persons who live with war, famine, crowding, and in squalid conditions associated with social unrest, with mortality rates in excess of 10% to 15%. Historical documents confirm that such devastation has been a continuous feature of human existence to the extent that typhus has been a major determinant in the outcome of many wars, altering human history in its wake-despite incomplete knowledge of its precise origin

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters have profound effects on health and require medical intervention as part of relief operations. The world's populations are becoming increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events, which are responsible for most natural disasters. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most prominent global climate system associated with year-to-year weather variability and extreme events. We have estimated the burden on human health of natural disasters associated with ENSO.
METHODS: We used time-series regression analysis of the relation between El Niño years and the

Bariatric surgery, while beneficial for managing obesity and improving fertility, can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies that impact maternal and fetal health. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with a history of gastric bypass who developed Kwashiorkor, a rare and severe complication of malnutrition, during the second trimester of her twin pregnancy. This condition was associated with severe intrauterine growth restriction. Kwashiorkor, typically seen in young children suffering from famine in low-income regions, is characterized by severe protein deficiency. In this case, parent

Scurvy, a severe form of vitamin C deficiency, killed scores of people until its cause and treatment were firmly established at the end of the eighteenth century. Since then, cases have surged periodically around the world, mostly in developing countries and during times of war and famine. In developed countries, scurvy is still endemic and evidence is growing that vitamin C deficiency might affect up to 30 percent of the population. Low socio-economic status, alcoholism, severe psychiatric illness leading to poor nutrition and critical illness are significant risk factors. We hereby report th

The persistent conflict in Sudan has worsened the impacts of the prolonged droughts, destroying crops and livestock and severely undermining people's means of survival. Furthermore, the scarcity of water and fertile land has increased competition over resources between communities, further displacing populations. This displacement leads to worsening the crisis, straining resources, spreading disease and overwhelming healthcare. For instance, rainfall, which is one of the most devastating climate changes, can reach up to 427.70 mm in one city. Consequently, Sudan confronts widespread famine thr

The Spanish flu spread from September 23, 1918 to 1920. This disease was one of the historical catastrophes in Iran, and a large number of people in Tehran were infected. Evidence also shows that 5000-10000 out of the 250000 infected people died in Tehran over three years. Besides, an increase was detected in the prevalence of other diseases such as pericarditis, orchitis, mastoiditis, meningitis, optic neuritis, paralysis of the palate, mania, cholera, and dysentery. Overall, five percent of the city were destroyed, and the population and economic development were severely damaged. This study

Louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is known to have killed millions of people over the course of European history and remains a major cause of mortality in parts of the world. Its pathogen, Borrelia recurrentis, shares a common vector with global killers such as typhus and plague and is known for its involvement in devastating historical epidemics such as the Irish potato famine. Here, we describe a European and historical genome of Brecurrentis, recovered from a 15th century skeleton from Oslo. Our distinct European lineage has a discrete genomic makeup, displaying an ancestral oppA-1 gene an

Using the essential elements of tragic action described in Aristotles Poetics, the text compares João Cabral de Melo Neto's Morte e vida severina to Sophocles Oedipus rex with the purpose of bringing to light the tension that exists between human necessity and human action. It is an eminently epidemiological fact that draws a link between these two works. In Morte e vida severina, the causa efficiens behind Severino's decision to migrate is a famine; in Oedipus rex, a plague afflicting the inhabitants of Thebes is the event that hastens discovery of king Laiuss true assassin. It is a reflectio

In this lecture, given at the International Conferences on Neuroscience, in Quito, May 31st-June 1st of 2013, the topic of famine situations during the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, was approached. Madrid, the capital of Spain, was under food, water and milk rationing during that period. This situation led to conditions that showed the relationships between the nervous system and nutrition. The Madrilenian population was submitted to a real experiment of hyponutrition, similar to the one that may be reproduced at the laboratory. At the end of the war, the National Direction on Health and the I

An epidemic not attributable to plague caused thousands of deaths in Milan in the summer of 1629, a time of war and famine that immediately preceded the even more fatal Great Plague of 1630 that killed an estimated ten of thousands of people. The 5,993 deaths of 1629 recorded in the Liber Mortuorum of Milan (a city with an estimated population of 130,000 inhabitants at the time) were 45.7% more than the average number recorded between 1601 and 1628. Registered deaths peaked in July, and 3,363 of the deaths (56,1%) were attributed to a febrile illness which, in most cases (2,964, 88%), was not

After the Second Opium War, the signing of the Tientsin Treaty and the Peking Treaty legitimized the missionary activities and authorized the missionary the rights to enter inland China for propagating their religious doctrines. In the late 1870s, the"The extraordinary famine of the Ding Wu year"and the subsequent epidemic provided the opportunity for missionaries to enter Shanxi. Dr. Schofield, sent by the China Inland Mission, arrived in Taiyuan in 1880, set up clinics and practised there. He died of typhus after treating a typhus patient in the summer of 1883. Schofield stayed and practised

The global demographic impact of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic continues to fascinate researchers and scholars. This paper examines the social and demographic effects of this outbreak on Iranian society, through a comprehensive investigation of the modes of transmission and propagation, mortality rates, and other distinctive features of the region, and reveals the importance of taking a country's unique sociopolitical settings into account. Iran was one of the regions hit hardest by the pandemic, with mortality rates significantly higher than in most regions of the world. Though globally the

Historical accounts have suggested a temporal relationship between famines and epidemics. More recently, careful epidemiologic studies have shown a relationship between nutritional deficiencies and heightened risk of morbidity and mortality due to infectious disease. These observations led to studies that examined the effect of protein-energy malnutrition on immunocompetence. The lymphoid tissues, particularly the thymus, were found to be atrophied. There was a reduction in delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity, fewer T cells, especially T helper cells, decreased thymulin activity, impaired secre

Dermatologists play a critical role in diagnosing and managing nutritional deficiencies as they often present with cutaneous findings. Traditionally, nutritional dermatoses are taught in the context of developing countries, famine, population displacement, and poor health care access; however, in the United States, common risk factors include chronic liver disease, alcoholism, psychiatric disease, bariatric surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and hemodialysis. Additionally, nutritional dermatoses may be underdiagnosed in the United States and result in increased morbidity and utilization of h

It is largely unknown how the process of microbial community assembly is affected by the order of species arrival, initial species abundances and interactions between species. A minimal way of capturing competitive abilities in a frequency-dependent manner is with an invasibility network specifying whether a species at low abundance can increase in frequency in an environment dominated by another species. Here, using a panel of prolific small-molecule producers and a habitat with feast-and-famine cycles, we show that the most abundant strain can often exclude other strains--resulting in bistab
