The changing face of hunger: from fasting to the concept of atherogenesis.

The history of hunger is a story about natural disasters and wars, but, on the other hand, also about the investigation of evolutionary defense mechanisms concerning quantitative food shortages. The article presents how fasting and the experimental starving oriented the development of physiology, and it is based on a comparative analysis of monographs and articles on starvation in the medical context from library collections and the PubMed database. Over the centuries, doctors have believed that fasting has a beneficial effect on health, and they recommended a restrictive diet during an illnes

Multiple food allergy: a possible diagnosis in breastfed infants.

Six infants suspected of food allergy during breastfeeding were evaluated using prick tests, total IgE, RASTs and intestinal permeability measurements during fast and provocation with mother's milk. An elimination diet was undertaken in mothers, removing first cow's milk protein (CMP), then, when inefficient, all foods suspected on the clinical history or a positive prick test in the child, followed by oral challenges in mother's diet with the corresponding food. The sole CMP-free diet in mothers always proved insufficient. In four, an additional diet excluding two to three other foods cleared

Electromagnetic wave-based technology for ready-to-eat foods preservation: a review of applications, challenges and prospects.

In recent years, the ready-to-eat foods market has grown significantly due to its high nutritional value and convenience. However, these foods are also at risk of microbial contamination, which poses food safety hazards. Additionally, traditional high-temperature sterilization methods can cause food safety and nutritional health problems such as protein denaturation and lipid oxidation. Therefore, exploring and developing effective sterilization technologies is imperative to ensure food safety and nutritional properties, and protect consumers from potential foodborne diseases. This paper focus

Single or combined use of intermittent fasting and probiotics reduce Campylobacter colonization in the murine gut.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the impact of single or combined use of intermittent fasting and probiotics, which have been recommended as an alternative to antibiotics in recent years due to their proven efficacy, against Campylobacter colonization in mice. For this purpose, mice infected with Campylobacter jejuni were divided into groups and exposed to intermittent fasting and probiotics, alone and together. At the end of the experimental study, ileum and cecum contents were obtained for microbiological analyzes, and stomach and intestinal tissue samples were collected

Healthy Taiwanese Eating Approach (TEA) toward Total Wellbeing and Healthy Longevity.

A healthy dietary pattern review for Asian countries is scarce, which is crucial for guiding healthy eating. We reviewed Taiwanese dietary pattern discovery studies. Included were 19 studies, the majority of which employed dimension reduction methods to find dietary patterns associated with various health conditions. To show what is a high or low intake of foods in Taiwan, we also report the average dietary content and the 25th and 75th percentile values of the adult population for six food groups gathered by the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan, 2017-2020. The healthy Taiwanese dietary a

The prospective impact of food pricing on improving dietary consumption: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: While food pricing is a promising strategy to improve diet, the prospective impact of food pricing on diet has not been systematically quantified. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the prospective effect of changes in food prices on dietary consumption. DESIGN: We systematically searched online databases for interventional or prospective observational studies of price change and diet; we also searched for studies evaluating adiposity as a secondary outcome. Studies were excluded if price data were collected before 1990. Data were extracted independently and in duplicate. Findings were poole

Diet self-selection and food hoarding after food deprivation by Siberian hamsters.

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) increase food hoarding, but not food intake, after a fast. Because the physiological mechanisms underlying these changes in food hoarding are virtually unknown, we sought insight into these mechanisms by allowing hamsters to self-select their diet from food sources varying in macronutrient composition and caloric density ("dietary wisdom"). Therefore, the effects of food deprivation length on diet self-selection were tested in adult female hamsters after adaptation to three composite diets: sunflower seeds (SS), pellet chow (PC), and rabbit chow (RC). Global food expenditure patterns diverge between low-income and high-income countries.

Globalization, income growth and changing cultural trends are believed to prompt consumers in low-income countries to adopt the more affluent diet of high-income countries. This study investigates the convergence of food expenditure patterns worldwide, focusing on total food expenditure, raw food categories and ultra-processed foods and beverages across more than 90 countries over the past decades. Contrary to prior belief, we find that food expenditure patterns of lower-income countries do not universally align with those of higher-income nations. This trend is evident across most raw food ca

Ultra-processed foods and human health: An umbrella review and updated meta-analyses of observational evidence.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ultra-processed food (UPF) intake has increased sharply over the last few decades and has been consistently asserted to be implicated in the development of non-communicable diseases. We aimed to evaluate and update the existing observational evidence for associations between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and human health. METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase from inception to March 2023 to identify and update meta-analyses of observational studies examining the associations between UPF consumption, as defined by the NOVA classification, and a wide spectrum of he

Association of combined ultra-processed food intake (ultra-processed dietary pattern) with cognitive function impairment: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on ultra-processed foods (UPF) and cognitive impairment often isolated UPF from overall dietary patterns, limiting real-world interpretation. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to April 2026 for prospective cohort studies assessing total UPF intake (defined by NOVA) and risk of cognitive impairment (including cognitive dysfunction, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease). A random-effects model was used to pool adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) comparing highest versus lowest UPF consumption. RESULTS: Eight cohort st

Ultra-processed foods and cardio-kidney-metabolic syndrome: A review of recent evidence.

The rapid increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has become a significant global public health concern. UPFs are typically high in unhealthy fats, refined sugars, sodium, and other additives while being low in proteins, fibers, and other essential nutrients. Their high glycemic index and glycemic load lead to blood sugar spikes, contributing to metabolic dysregulation. Emerging evidence links UPF intake to the development of the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome and a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, such as all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The p

Combination of endolysins and high pressure to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes.

Outbreaks of listeriosis are often related to the consumption of low-processed ready-to-eat food products (e.g. soft cheeses or smoked fish) contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Traditional preservation techniques, such as heat treatment, cannot eliminate Listeria from these products without strongly affecting the quality of the foods. We therefore investigated the use of endolysin (PlyP40, Ply511, or PlyP825) in combination with high hydrostatic pressure processing to kill L. monocytogenes in buffer. The results demonstrated a more than additive effect when both treatments were combined.

Commercial determinants of health: case study of ultra-processed food companies in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-processed food companies in Thailand have rapidly expanded, and they play an important role in the domestic economy and public policy. These companies influence policy-making by building networks with political authorities and using various strategies to pursue their interests. Increased consumption of ultra-processed foods has been shown to be strongly associated with obesity and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are a growing public health concern in Thailand. This study investigated the commercial determinants of health (CDOH) strategies of the major ultra-proc

Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and Ultra-Processed Foods Consumption in a Group of Italian Patients with Celiac Disease.

Evidence on the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) in adults with celiac disease (CD) and its impact on Mediterranean Diet (MD) adherence is still limited. Our aim was to determine UPF consumption and its relationship with MD adherence in a group of adults, according to the presence of CD. This case-control study included 103 adults with CD and 312 without CD. UPF intake was assessed using the NOVA Food Frequency Questionnaire (NFFQ), while MD adherence was assessed using the Medi-Lite score. UPF represented 14.5% of the diet of participants with CD (246 g/day) and came mainly from cer

Dietary Acrylamide: A Detailed Review on Formation, Detection, Mitigation, and Its Health Impacts.

In today's fast-paced world, people increasingly rely on a variety of processed foods due to their busy lifestyles. The enhanced flavors, vibrant colors, and ease of accessibility at reasonable prices have made ready-to-eat foods the easiest and simplest choice to satiate hunger, especially those that undergo thermal processing. However, these foods often contain an unsaturated amide called 'Acrylamide', known by its chemical name 2-propenamide, which is a contaminant formed when a carbohydrate- or protein-rich food product is thermally processed at more than 120 °C through methods like frying

Impact of the Revision of European Food Hygiene Legislation and the Introduction of Convenience-based Food on Food Safety in the German Military.

The implementation of the European Food Regulation in the German military started in 2003 and was fully implemented in 2006. In addition, in 2003 the German military introduced the concept of using convenience-based foods targeted to improve the safety of food served to the troops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of these changes on food safety and the occurrence of food-borne disease outbreaks in the German military. For this purpose, data from a total of 517 food-borne outbreaks that occurred between 1995 and 2019 in the responsible areas of the German military both within t

Neighborhood socioeconomic status and food environment: a 20-year longitudinal latent class analysis among CARDIA participants.

Cross-sectional studies suggest that neighborhood socioeconomic (SES) disadvantage is associated with obesogenic food environments. Yet, it is unknown how exposure to neighborhood SES patterning through adulthood corresponds to food environments that also change over time. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to classify participants in the U.S.-based Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study [n=5,114 at baseline 1985-1986 to 2005-2006] according to their longitudinal neighborhood SES residency patterns (upward, downward, stable high and stable low). For most classes of residents,

It is not all about regeneration: Planarians striking power to stand starvation.

All living forms, prokaryotes as eukaryotes, have some means of adaptation to food scarcity, which extends the survival chances under extreme environmental conditions. Nowadays we know that dietary interventions, including fasting, extends lifespan of many organisms and can also protect against age-related diseases including in humans. Therefore, the capacity of adapting to periods of food scarcity may have evolved billions of years ago not only to allow immediate organismal survival but also to be able to extend organismal lifespan or at least to lead to a healthier remaining lifespan. Diet, Ultra-Processed Foods, and Food Additives in Crohn's Disease: A Comprehensive Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract resulting from a complex interplay among genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, environmental factors, and alterations in the gut microbiota. Among these, diet has emerged as a key modifiable factor influencing intestinal inflammation, barrier integrity, and disease progression. This review aims to critically evaluate the role of dietary patterns and food additives in the pathogenesis and management of Crohn's disease, with particular emphasis on their effects on intestinal inflamma
