Report of a trisomy 8p infant with carrier father.

This report describes an infant with fatal congenital heart disease, cleft palate, brain malformations, and trisomy 8p resultant from the paternal balanced reciprocal translocation, rcp(8;15) (p11;p11). Review of six previously reported trisomy 8p patients (resultant from parental balanced translocation in each instance) revealed severe mental retardation in five, short stature in all, and a variety of brain, skeletal, and cardiac defects. The features of the seven trisomy 8p patients reviewed here are not sufficiently similar to suggest a distinct dysmorphic syndrome. In addition the features

Germ-cell malignant tumours in father and son.

Germ-cell malignant tumours occurred in a man and his son. The father, who had a teratoma of the right testicle removed 24 years ago, is presently alive and well. The son, who had a choriocarcinoma presenting as an abdominal mass, possibly originating in the testicle, died within 7 months of the diagnosis with metastases in the lungs, liver and retroperitoneum. This report documents the third such case of germ-cell neoplasms occurring in father and son.

The evolving role of fathers of young deaf children in Turkey.

The present study aimed to explore the evolving role of fathers in the lives of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and to construct a theory that explains this role within the Turkish context. The participants were 12 Turkish fathers of young DHH children. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, theoretical data were collected over seven months through semi-structured interviews, supported by supplementary techniques including information forms, observations, documents, an artifact, and a reflective journal. The data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis and con

The role of mothers and fathers in children's health care use.

We use rich longitudinal administrative medical records to examine the separate roles of mothers and fathers in children's health care use. We do so distinguishing between different types of care and child sex. Overall, we find limited evidence of an association between parents' education and their children's health care use. Mothers' health care use appears in general more strongly associated than fathers' health care use with that of their children. On the other hand, for some types of care (GP and specialist visits), these associations in health care use are stronger within the same-sex par

Mothers' and Fathers' Recode Use With Young Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Parental recodes, a form of responsivity, help facilitate language development in children with Down syndrome (DS). However, little is known about the complexity and referents of recodes or differences between mothers and fathers and how this relates to child language. METHOD: This study included 15 children with DS (Mage = 39.67 months, range: 24-61 months) and their mothers and fathers. Mother-child and father-child play interactions were recorded in the home. RESULTS: We found no differences between mothers' and fathers' use of recodes. A moderate positive association existed bet

The Impact of Social Support: Fathers' Depressive Symptoms and Parenting Stress.

Parental depressive symptoms are positively correlated with levels of parenting stress. Greater parenting stress predicts negative outcomes for both parents and children, and worse family functioning. Social support is a key protective factor against depressive symptoms; however, minimal research has examined the relationship between social support, paternal depressive symptoms, and parenting stress among fathers. Seventy-nine fathers of children, aged 2-6 years old, completed an online survey. Mediation analyses, using Hayes' PROCESS macro, determined significant indirect effects of social su

Trajectories of depressive symptoms of mothers and fathers over 11 years.

Aims. Parental postpartum depressive symptoms have been extensively studied, but the combined longitudinal depression trajectories of parents and their long-term development beyond the postpartum period remain largely underexplored. We identified dyadic longitudinal depressive symptom trajectories in new parents, followed over an 11-year period, and compared parental characteristics, as well as child temperament and mental health factors, across different parental trajectory classes. Methods. A prenatal cohort of 5,518 couples was studied. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh

Sociodemographic Trends and Perinatal Outcomes in Fathers 50 Years and Older.

IMPORTANCE: The age of fathers at childbirth is rising, with an increasing number of births attributed to older fathers. While the impact of advanced paternal age has been documented, sociodemographic data about fathers aged 50 years and older remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To explore sociodemographic and temporal trends among the oldest US fathers (age ≥50 years) and their associations with perinatal outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included data from all US births from 2011 to 2022 using the National Vital Statistics System. Data were analyz

Fathers' alcohol consumption and risk of substance-related disorders in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed how children are affected by parental alcohol consumption without clinically diagnosed alcohol problems, especially in relation to more long-term and severe consequences. The aim is to investigate how fathers' alcohol use is related to the risk for substance-related disorders in offspring. METHOD: A prospective cohort study of 64 710 Swedish citizens whose fathers were conscripted for compulsory military training at ages 18-20 in 1969/70. Information on fathers' alcohol consumption, frequency of intoxication and apprehended for drunkenness, was collected

"When She Says Daddy": Black Fathers' Recidivism following Reentry from Jail.

We report on the findings of a mixed methods longitudinal study of 84 African American fathers of young children who were enrolled into the study during the father's jail stay. Participants were assessed using interviews, self-report measures, and administrative records on frequency of father-child contact, father-caregiver relationship quality, family support, paternal pre-incarceration employment, fathers' plans to live with the child upon reentry, history of substance abuse, and new convictions one year following release from jail. Qualitative analysis revealed three primary identities of f

Manifestation and Associated Factors of Pregnancy-Related Worries in Expectant Fathers.

Background: During the last decades, fathers have increasingly participated in prenatal care, birth preparation classes, and childbirth. However, comparably little is known about the prenatal emotional well-being of fathers, particularly content and extent of broader paternal concerns that may arise during pregnancy beyond those focusing on childbirth. Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the manifestation of paternal pregnancy-related worries in a population-based sample and to identify relevant associated factors. Materials and Methods: As part of a longitudinal pregnancy cohort

Fathers' Alcohol Consumption and Long-Term Risk for Mortality in Offspring.

AIM: This study examined associations between fathers' alcohol consumption and risk for total and cause-specific mortality in offspring. SHORT SUMMARY: We examined the associations between fathers' alcohol consumption and total and cause-specific mortality in adult offspring. Fathers' alcohol consumption was associated with increased risk of alcohol-related mortality in offspring. The association appeared to be weaker for causes of death in which alcohol plays a smaller, or less direct, role. METHODS: Data on fathers' alcohol consumption, and offspring's risky use of alcohol, smoking, mental

Social Services Professionals' Views of Barriers to Supporting Homeless Noncustodial Fathers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate barriers to service for homeless non-custodial fathers from the perspective of social service professionals who work directly to assist men with securing housing while meeting the demands of fatherhood. BACKGROUND: The population of homeless fathers in the United States is increasing. Longitudinal studies show that although homeless noncustodial fathers and mothers face similar risk factors and barriers to services, research on minimizing risk factors and barriers for noncustodial fathers is limited compared with that for noncustodial mothers. METHOD: The sample inc

Early life stress in fathers improves behavioural flexibility in their offspring.

Traumatic experiences in childhood can alter behavioural responses and increase the risk for psychopathologies across life, not only in the exposed individuals but also in their progeny. In some conditions, such experiences can however be beneficial and facilitate the appraisal of adverse environments later in life. Here we expose newborn mice to unpredictable maternal separation combined with unpredictable maternal stress (MSUS) for 2 weeks and assess the impact on behaviour in the offspring when adult. We show that MSUS in male mice favours goal-directed behaviours and behavioural flexibilit

Forgiveness, and other themes, in women whose fathers killed their mothers.

The purpose of this article is to describe the experiences of adult women who, when they were children, experienced the homicide of their mother by their father. Two qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 31 women survivors of uxoricide to create a qualitative description of the phenomenon. A number of themes have emerged including descriptions of the daughter "seeking understanding," "forgiving the father" (or not), and descriptions of the father in terms of his being her father or in terms of his behavior and the homicide.

Diagnosing postpartum depression in mothers and fathers: whatever happened to anxiety?

BACKGROUND: Although anxiety disorders are documented in the literature for new mothers (but less so for fathers), rates of postpartum caseness tend to include only those with depression when diagnostic interviews or self-report measures validated on such interviews are used. This methodology therefore underestimates the true percentage of women and men who experience significant psychological difficulties postpartum. This has implications for assessment, treatment and screening for postnatal mood disorders. METHOD: Two studies were conducted on a total of 408 women and 356 men expecting thei

Assessment of family history of alcoholism in sons of alcoholic fathers.

Results of studies of sons of alcoholics (SOAs) may vary depending on the density of the family history of alcoholism of the SOA subjects selected. To assess how reliably SOA subjects report a history of alcoholism in first- and second-degree relatives, we compared family histories obtained from 20 SOAs with those provided by their fathers. In all 20 cases, SOAs and their fathers agreed that the father met criteria for alcohol dependence but for no other primary Axis I psychiatric disorder. However, agreement was not as good for whether other paternal relatives in addition to the father were a

Family training: supporting mothers and fathers in the transition to parenthood.

This study discusses the views of mothers and fathers on family training and on how family training supports them in the transition to parenthood. The data were collected in 1993, using a questionnaire submitted about 9 weeks after the birth of a child. The same questions were asked of the 189 mothers and the 127 fathers who replied. According to the results both mothers and fathers consider it essential that their views and expectations are given due attention in the planning of family training. Specific issues that were thought to require priority attention in family training were the actual

Neglected fathers: limitations in diagnostic and treatment resources for violent men.

In its examination of violent activity within the family, current literature assumes a "pecking order" exists: Larger and stronger family members attack those who are smaller and weaker. Adult males are usually studied as primary maltreaters of spouses, while females are considered mainly responsible for physically abusive behavior with children. Use of this perspective has led to neglect of male abusers, who injure half of the mistreated children in the United States. Through assessment of 66 studies of child abuse published during a 5-year period, this paper documents the lack of attention a
