Pleuroscopic cryoprobe biopsies of the pleura: a feasibility and safety study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Flexi-rigid pleuroscopy is a useful tool in the work-up of pleural effusions, but pleural biopsy using flexible forceps can be difficult in some patients. This study evaluated the feasibility, safety and diagnostic value of using a flexible cryoprobe to obtain parietal pleural biopsies during pleuroscopy. METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective study. In patients undergoing diagnostic pleuroscopy, pleural biopsy using flexible forceps, followed by a flexible cryoprobe introduced through the pleuroscope, were performed. A pathologist independently reviewed all

Balloon catheter sialoplasty: a safety and feasibility pilot study.

Obstructive sialoadenitis is the most common non-neoplastic disorder of the salivary glands. With advances in the use of diagnostic and interventional sialoendoscopy in the major salivary glands, operations can often be less invasive and treatment can spare the gland and restore normal function. By using an expandable balloon catheter to dilate ductal stenosis during sialoendoscopy it is possible to dilate a stenotic duct and remove large stones with or without a basket. However, the use of different angiocatheters or dedicated balloons is still empirical. In this pilot study we assessed the f

Monitoring of antibiotic consumption in livestock: a German feasibility study.

Every application of antibacterial drugs in veterinary medicine may encourage selection for resistant bacteria. In Germany no valid data are available which would be suitable for a species specific estimation of drug consumption especially regarding food producing animals. Therefore, a representative monitoring of consumption of antibacterial drugs in food producing animals should be implemented. As a first step, a feasibility project was conducted to identify the technical preconditions and develop a concept for a regular monitoring system within Germany as a country with a non-central federa

Endoscopic monobloc advancement with ultrasonic osteotomy: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: The monobloc procedure has been criticized owing to its tendency for cerebrospinal fluid leak, relapse, infection, and incomplete ossification. Such risks have been decreased through gradual advancement of the monobloc via distraction osteogenesis. This cadaver study was undertaken to develop an endoscopic, ultrasonic monobloc osteotomy to further minimize risks and potentially improve outcomes. METHODS: Three fresh, adult human cadavers were used in this study. Endoscopic ultrasonic monobloc osteotomy was completed in all cadavers with 3 incisions hidden in the hair-bearing scalp

A robotic wheelchair trainer: design overview and a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing independent mobility is important for children with a severe movement disability, but learning to drive a powered wheelchair can be labor intensive, requiring hand-over-hand assistance from a skilled therapist. METHODS: To improve accessibility to training, we developed a robotic wheelchair trainer that steers itself along a course marked by a line on the floor using computer vision, haptically guiding the driver's hand in appropriate steering motions using a force feedback joystick, as the driver tries to catch a mobile robot in a game of "robot tag". Feasibility study of logic circuits with a spin wave bus.

We present a feasibility study of logic circuits utilizing spin waves for information transmission and processing. As an alternative approach to the transistor-based architecture, logic circuits with a spin wave bus do not use charge as an information carrier. In this work we describe the general concept of logic circuits with a spin wave bus and illustrate its performance by numerical simulations based on available experimental data. Theoretical estimates and results of numerical simulations on signal attenuation, signal phase velocity, and the minimum spin wave energy required per bit in the

A feasibility study of valve repair in rheumatic mitral regurgitation.

Valve repair is an established form of treatment for mitral valve regurgitation. In order to elucidate the feasibility and results of aggressive repair in a young rheumatic population, all consecutive patients operated on between July 1988 and July 1990 for mitral regurgitation were reviewed. There were 203 patients with a mean age of 29 years; 91% were in functional classes III-IV. Pure regurgitation was present in 47.8%. Associated valvular surgery was performed in 56.2%. Forty-nine (24.1%) patients had a straight valve replacement (MVR), 18 (8.9%) had an unsuccessful attempt at repair and i

A feasibility study for the in vivo measurement of beryllium by photonuclear activation.

Diagnosis of the beryllium-induced disease, berylliosis, is often difficult and always requires that the presence of the metal in tissue be demonstrated. The feasibility of developing an in vivo method of measurement, which exploits the uniquely low photonuclear reaction threshold of 1.67 MeV in beryllium, has been investigated. Suitable photon sources and detector systems were assessed, both experimentally by phantom studies and theoretically by use of a Monte-Carlo neutron transport code. It is concluded that by using a filtered source of 124Sb for bilateral irradiation of the chest, and an

Feasibility of Monitoring Heart and Respiratory Rates Using Nonwearable Devices and Consistency of the Measured Parameters: Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: As Japan is the world's fastest-aging society with a declining population, it is challenging to secure human resources for care providers. Therefore, the Japanese government is promoting digital transformation and the use of nursing care equipment, including nonwearable devices that monitor heart and respiratory rates. However, the feasibility of monitoring heart and respiratory rates with nonwearable devices and the consistency of the rates measured have not been reported. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we focused on a sheet-type nonwearable device (Safety Sheep Sensor) introduced in

Feasibility of coronary access after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI): a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

INTRODUCTION: The expanding indications for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) to younger, lower-risk patients, entails assessing not only the short-term clinical outcomes but also the long-term considerations for future interventions. The prevalence of coronary artery disease in TAVI patients is relevant, and the optimal timing of percutaneous coronary intervention remains a question. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis including 20 eligible studies involving 1660 patients who underwent coronary angiography after TAVI. The primary en
