Metabolic and biochemical changes during heat stress in relation to the feathering degree of the domestic hen.

Rhode Island Red layers, consisting of four genetically different feathering types- fully feathered (nanaff), fully frizzled feathered (nanaFf), naked neck (Nanaff), naked neck frizzled type (NanaFf)- were exposed to heat stress, and the physiological and metabolic responses were evaluated according to the feathering degree. Heat stress conditions (34 degrees C and relative humidity of 45%) were maintained for 8 weeks. Body temperature measured at different points, body characteristics and blood gas and electrolytes were determined and related to the environmental heat conditions. A plumage re

Whole-genome sequencing of Chlamydia psittaci from Australasian avian hosts: A genomics approach to a pathogen that still ruffles feathers.

Chlamydia psittaci is a globally distributed veterinary pathogen with zoonotic potential. Although C. psittaci infections have been reported in various hosts, isolation and culture of Chlamydia is challenging, hampering efforts to produce contemporary global C. psittaci genomes. This is particularly evident in the lack of avian C. psittaci genomes from Australia and New Zealand. In this study, we used culture-independent probe-based whole-genome sequencing to expand the global C. psittaci genome catalogue. Here, we provide new C. psittaci genomes from two pigeons, six psittacines, and novel ho

PFAS concentrations and compositional profiles in great tit (Parus major) feathers, faecal samples and blood plasma: Implications for non-invasive monitoring.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread in our environment, and have the ability to bioaccumulate in biota. To monitor local PFAS contamination, often bioindicator species are used, of which the great tit is a frequently studied species. To be able to monitor these compounds, generally invasive sampling techniques are used (e.g. blood plasma, feathers). To this day, only a few studies have analysed PFAS in the faeces of wild birds, which were all performed on aquatic birds, and only one of these looked at the suitability of faeces samples to replace blood sampling. Therefore,

Multi-residues UHPLC-MS/MS analysis of 53 antibacterial compounds in poultry feathers as an analytical tool in food safety assurance.

Under the EU official monitoring programs, the antibiotics are controlled in tissues of food producing animals. However, regarding the overuse of medicines in veterinary practice, there is a strong need to find an alternative to post-mortem analysis of antibiotics. The use of feathers, as an unconventional matrix, enable to control of birds treatment during breeding. Thus, a novel ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the analysis of 53 compounds from 11 groups of antibacterials, including penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines, quinol

How far north are migrant birds transporting the tick Ixodes scapularis in Canada? Insights from stable hydrogen isotope analyses of feathers.

Lyme disease is emerging in Canada because of northward range expansion of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis. It is hypothesised that I. scapularis feeding on passerine birds migrating north in spring are important in founding new I. scapularis populations leading to northward range expansion. However, there are no studies on how far north I. scapularis may be carried, only inferences from passive tick surveillance. We used stable hydrogen isotope (δ(2)H) analysis of rectrices collected from northward migrating, I. scapularis-carrying, passerine birds captured in Canada to estimate how far nor

Alterations in the infrared spectral signature of avian feathers reflect potential chemical exposure: a pilot study comparing two sites in Pakistan.

Chemical contamination of ecosystems is a global issue with evidence that pollutants impact on living organisms in a harmful fashion. Developing sensor approaches that would allow the derivation of biomarkers or signatures of effect in target sentinel organisms and monitor environmental chemical contamination in a high throughput manner is of utmost importance. As biomolecules absorb infrared (IR), signature vibrational spectra related to structure and function can be derived. In light of this, we tested the notion that IR spectra of bird feathers might reflect environmental chemical contamina

Mercury in tree swallow food, eggs, bodies, and feathers at Acadia National Park, Maine, and an EPA superfund site, Ayer, Massachusetts.

We monitored nest boxes during 1997-1999 at Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, ME and at an old-field site in Orono, ME to determine mercury (Hg) uptake in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) eggs, tissues, and food boluses. Also, in 1998-1999 we monitored nest boxes at Grove Pond and Plow Shop Pond at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site in Ayer, MA. We recorded breeding success at all locations. On average among locations, total mercury (THg) biomagnified 2 to 4-fold from food to eggs and 9 to 18-fold from food to feathers. These are minimum values because the proportio

Contrasting levels of heavy metals in the feathers of urban pigeons from close habitats suggest limited movements at a restricted scale.

Despite restrictions in emissions, heavy metals may remain a major environmental issue due to their numerous sources and their persistence. Here, we assessed current levels of 4 metals (Copper, Cadmium, Lead, Zinc) in the feathers of 91 feral pigeons (Columba livia) from 7 sites in the urbanized region of Paris. Elements were detected in all pigeons, indicating that metals persist in urbanized areas. The ratio between metal concentrations in the feathers vs. in the environment calculated using data from other studies was 2-90 times higher for cadmium than for other metals, underlying its ecolo

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

Variable-interval temporal feathering to optimize organs-at-risk repair for head and neck adaptive radiotherapy.

Background and Purpose: Temporally feathered radiation therapy (TFRT) for head-and-neck cancer (HNC) combines variable-dose intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) subplans to increase organs-at-risk's (OAR) recovery. This study evaluated whether incorporating OAR-specific radiosensitivity into variable rest-time planning can reduce side effects. Materials and Methods: Using radiosensitivity profiles of five OARs (larynx, esophagus, parotid, spinal cord, brainstem), we developed an optimized TFRT (oTFRT) model to maximize OAR recovery by optimizing rest times, guided by the linear-quadrat

Effects of Ligilactobacillus salivarius on the control of pullorum disease and cecal microbiota in red-feathered native chickens.

Pullorum disease (PD), caused by Salmonella Pullorum (SP), remains a persistent challenge in native chicken production in Asia. Recurrent outbreaks and reliance on antibiotics have raised concerns about antimicrobial resistance. This study established a reproducible clinical PD model in red-feathered native chickens (RFCs) and evaluated Ligilactobacillus salivarius (LS) as a potential alternative to antibiotic. Oral administration of a field SP isolate (SPB6) at 1 × 10⁸ CFU per chick for four consecutive days induced typical PD signs and persistent bacterial colonization, whereas a single-dose

Hemp Seed-Derived Exosomes Protect Against Dihydrotestosterone-Induced Chicken Feather Growth Inhibition.

Background/Objectives: Androgenetic alopecia suppresses hair follicle growth. This occurs via dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which inhibits key molecular pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin and Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling. Exosomes derived from plant callus cultures are promising biomaterials for targeted delivery and regenerative medicine. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of hemp seed callus-derived exosomes (E40) against DHT-induced inhibition of feather follicle development in a chicken embryo model. Methods: E40 exosomes were isolated and purified from the calli of germinat

Effects of Flight Restraint and Housing Conditions on Feather Corticosterone in White Storks Under Human Care.

Flight is part of the natural behaviours of most bird species, and as a consequence, flight restraint in zoos, even for those species that are primarily ground-dwelling, encounters increasing animal welfare concerns. While previous studies on greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) have found no significant effects of flight restraint on welfare, scientific data on other species remains limited. This study investigated the welfare implications of flight restraint in white storks (Ciconia ciconia) by assessing feather corticosterone concentrations (C

The Proof Is in the Plumage: A Method for Detecting Dietary Ethanol Exposure in Birds by Testing for Ethyl Glucuronide in Feathers.

AbstractEthanol is a naturally occurring molecule produced via fermentation of sugar-rich foods by yeast. Ethanol catabolism is followed by production of secondary metabolites such as ethyl glucuronide (EtG), which can be measured to provide a retrospective view of dietary exposure. To date, occurrence of this molecule has not been studied in vertebrates other than humans and several other mammalian taxa. Here, we describe a method of testing for the presence of EtG in bird feathers and livers using mass spectrometry. Birds that regularly consume fruit and nectar may accordingly be ingesting e

A Comparative Review of the Pharmacology of Dalbavancin and Oritavancin for Gram-Positive Infections: Birds of a Feather or Apples and Oranges?

The clinical landscape of Gram-positive infections has been reshaped with the introduction of long-acting lipoglycopeptides, particularly dalbavancin and oritavancin. Both agents share broad-spectrum activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant strains, yet differ markedly in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, resistance profiles, and clinical adoption. This review presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of their structural innovations, distinct pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics, and dual

The Glutamatergic System Regulates Feather Pecking Behaviors in Laying Hens Through the Gut-Brain Axis.

Feather pecking (FP) is a significant welfare and economic problem in laying hen husbandry. While there is growing evidence that the glutamatergic system plays a crucial role in regulating FP behavior, the biological mechanisms remain unclear, largely due to the limited uptake of peripheral glutamate across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we applied a multi-omics approach combined with physiology assays to answer this question from the perspective of the gut-brain axis. A total of 108 hens were randomly assigned to two groups (treatment and control) with six replicates each, and the treat
