Reduced Neural Differentiation Between Feedback Conditions After Bimanual Coordination Training with and without Augmented Visual Feedback.

It has been established that bimanual coordination with augmented feedback (FB) versus no augmented feedback (NFB) is associated with activity in different brain regions. It is unclear however, whether this distinction remains after practice comprising both these conditions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in humans to compare visual FB versus NFB conditions for a bimanual tracking task, and their differential evolution across learning. Scanning occurred before (Pre) and after 2 weeks (Post) of mixed FB and NFB training using an event-related design, allowing differentiation bet

Dysfunctional reward processing amplifies stress-related smartphone overuse: Evidence from ERPs and ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic Smartphone Use (PSU) has become a major public health issue, with stress identified as a key factor. Pathological technology use is often linked to dysfunctional reward processing, which is characterized by hyperactivity during reward anticipation and hypoactivity during reward receipt, both closely tied to emotion regulation. This study aimed to investigate the association between PSU and event-related potentials (ERP) linked to reward anticipation and feedback processing, while elucidating the role of reward processing dysfunction in the escalation of daily l

Counterfactual processing of economic action-outcome alternatives in obsessive-compulsive disorder: further evidence of impaired goal-directed behavior.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder of automatic, uncontrollable behaviors and obsessive rumination. There is evidence that OCD patients have difficulties performing goal-directed actions, instead exhibiting repetitive stimulus-response habit behaviors. This might result from the excessive formation of stimulus-response habit associations or from an impairment in the ability to use outcome value to guide behavior. We investigated the latter by examining counterfactual decision making, which is the ability to use comparisons of prospective action-outcome scenarios to g

Positive and negative recency effects in retirement savings decisions.

Retirement savings decisions can be influenced by the fund composition of the retirement savings plan. In 2 experiments, strong composition effects were observed, with a larger percentage of resources being invested in stock funds when more stock than bond funds were offered. Although participants changed their allocations repeatedly, the opportunity to learn did not alter the composition effects. Learning processes led to positive and negative recency effects as well, providing evidence that allocations were strongly influenced by the recent performance of the different allocation options. Treatment Options for Fear of Blushing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review mechanisms of blushing and fear of blushing from physiological, neuropharmacological and psychological viewpoints, and to evaluate current forms of treatment for blushing-related fear. RECENT FINDINGS: Blushing appears to be driven primarily by sympathetic adrenomedullary and neural vasodilator discharge, possibly in association with secondary neurovascular inflammation. Psychological risk factors for fear of blushing include social anxiety, coupled with heightened self-focused attention and inflated beliefs about the likelihood and social costs of blushing. In ad

Mindfulness-based relapse prevention targeting psychological craving and trait mindfulness in young Chinese women with methamphetamine dependence: a randomized controlled trial.

METHODS: We recruited 58 MA-dependent young adult females from a compulsory isolation drug rehabilitation center in Sichuan Province and randomly divided them into an MBRP group (n = 29) and a control group (n = 29) according to their degree of psychological craving. The MBRP group received 2 hours of MBRP training twice a week for 4 weeks, alongside routine treatment at the drug rehabilitation center. Meanwhile, the control group solely received routine treatment at the drug rehabilitation center without any additional interventions. The assessment was conducted before and immediately after t

From Mission to MOSAIC: Growth and Resilience of an Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program.

BACKGROUND: Academic medicine programs face compounded challenges from public health crises, health inequities, and evolving federal policies pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Older adults and individuals living with serious illness-particularly those from marginalized communities-experienced greater morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic and may continue to see disproportionately negative outcomes amid 2025 federal regulatory changes. METHODS: Within a Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, a DEI initiative evolved into the MOSAIC Council (Mission

The self through the social mirror: Negative updating of self beliefs in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent and impairing condition characterized by negative self-beliefs and interpersonal difficulties. Enhanced updating of self-beliefs in response to negative social feedback is theorized to play a critical role in the persistence of SAD. A widely established framework in personality psychology, the "Big Two" suggests that the dimensions of agency and communion underlie the structure of self-beliefs. Previous research that overlooks this distinction has revealed inconsistent findings. The current study examined belief updating in a highly self-rele

A Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interface for Real-Time Speech Synthesis: The Importance of Multimodal Feedback.

We conducted a study of a motor imagery brain-computer interface (BCI) using electroencephalography to continuously control a formant frequency speech synthesizer with instantaneous auditory and visual feedback. Over a three-session training period, sixteen participants learned to control the BCI for production of three vowel sounds (/ textipa i/ [heed], / textipa A/ [hot], and / textipa u/ [who'd]) and were split into three groups: those receiving unimodal auditory feedback of synthesized speech, those receiving unimodal visual feedback of formant frequencies, and those receiving multimodal,

The Space Between Action and Reflection: Nursing Students' Experiences of Debriefing Timing.

INTRODUCTION: Debriefing is widely regarded as a central component of simulation-based learning, yet limited attention has been given to how the timing of debriefing is experienced by learners in undergraduate courses that include graded simulation. METHODS: An interpretive qualitative study situated within a constructivist epistemological perspective was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 10 third-year undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a course that included simulation-based learning. Interviews explored participants' experiences of simulation, perceptions of

Validation of the Coercive-Composite Abuse Scale (C-CAS) in an Australian sample of women experiencing intimate partner abuse.

OBJECTIVES: Coercive control is a complex behavioural phenomenon where severity, frequency and patterns need to be examined collectively. However, approaches to measuring coercive control to date have demonstrated limited understanding of these patterns of behaviour by a partner or ex-partner that reflect an individual woman's experience. The aim of this study was to develop a holistic contemporary valid self-report measure of coercive control by partners. DESIGN: Standard instrument development, with academic and lived experience feedback and psychometric testing, using secondary data analys

Mathematics self-efficacy and resilience link ICT use to mathematical literacy: the moderating role of mathematics anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: Digital technologies offer dynamic representations, immediate feedback, and autonomous inquiry in mathematics learning. Yet the association between ICT use and mathematical literacy may depend on students' psychological resources and emotions. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study examined the indirect roles of mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics resilience and the moderating role of mathematics anxiety. METHODS: Data were drawn from 34,406 students in PISA 2022 from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Macao, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong. Observed-variable path analysis tes

Review of Psychology on a Disk from CMS academic software: interactive activities for psychology.

Psychology on a Disk contains a variety of simulations that show a strong potential to motivate and educate introductory psychology students with a wide range of ability and initial interest. The exercises appear to be well within the grasp of first-year students and provide suitable starting points for discussion of terms, definitions, and areas of research activity. The quality of the simulations is high and provides some indication that there are additional areas of undergraduate psychology, for example, courses in abnormal, clinical, and developmental topics, in which specialized simulatio

The relationship between transition shock and professional identity of nursing interns in China: a moderated mediation effect analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nursing interns often experience transition shock upon entering clinical practice, which may diminish their professional identity and potentially lead to future turnover. Self-efficacy and feedback-seeking behavior are positive psychological resources for coping with occupational stressors and may be associated with a stronger sense of professional identity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between transition shock and professional identity among nursing interns and to examine the mediating role of feedback-seeking behavior and the moderating role of self-efficacy i

Effects of loss aversion on neural responses to loss outcomes: An event-related potential study.

Loss aversion is the tendency to prefer avoiding losses over acquiring gains of the same amount. To shed light on the spatio-temporal processes underlying loss aversion, we analysed the associations between individual loss aversion and electrophysiological responses to loss and gain outcomes in a monetary gamble task. Electroencephalographic feedback-related negativity (FRN) was computed in 29 healthy participants as the difference in electrical potentials between losses and gains. Loss aversion was evaluated using non-linear parametric fitting of choices in a separate gamble task. Loss aversi
