Platelet glycoprotein VI (GPVI) acts as a decisive collagen receptor in atherothrombosis. Besides collagen, injured atherosclerotic plaques expose tissue factor (TF) that triggers fibrin formation. BACKGROUND Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is a newly evolving rare non-infectious lung pathology, characterized by intra-alveolar fibrin balls on histology. OBJECTIVE: To improve understanding of the clinical, radiological and pathological characteristics of acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP).
METHODS: The clinical data of 5 AFOP patients were retrospectively analyzed. AFOP was diagnosed via percutaneous lung biopsy guided by chest computerized tomography (CT) in the Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School during March 2011 to June 2012. The clinical, radiological and pathological characteristics of those patients were summarized.

BACKGROUND: The optimal management strategy for acute Achilles tendon ruptures is controversial. These injuries historically were treated by nonoperative methods (cast immobilization, bandaging); however, operative repair of the ruptured tendon has become popular.

The purpose of the study was to measure the blood level of thrombus precursor protein (TpP), a soluble fibrin monomer, in patients with stable exertional angina (SEA) and healthy people. PURPOSE: The surgical management of complex perineal fistulas, such as high transsphincteric and suprasphincteric fistulas, or those associated with Crohn's disease, radiotherapy, surgical trauma, or cavity or a secondary tract, is associated with the risk of sphincter injury and significant discomfort. PURPOSE: We describe the use of fibrin tissue adhesive as an adjunct for reconstructing genital skin loss due to Fournier's gangrene.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated 2 patients with Fournier's gangrene with repeat surgical débridement and antibiotics. Delayed primary closure was enhanced by using liquid fibrin sealant. In 1 case the sealant was used to obliterate a large testicular thigh pouch that had become infected. A fibrinous exudate developed in 8 children after cataract extraction. Blunt trauma was the cause of cataract formation in 6 children; the other 2 presented with congenital cataract. In 4 of 6 children with traumatic cataract, iris damage was evident. Seven children had an intraocular lens implanted. Three male patients with purulent pericarditis, in whom complete drainage could not be obtained by pericardiocentesis, were treated with transcatheter intrapericardial urokinase to prevent the development of chronic constrictive pericarditis. As shown by echocardiography, the intrapericardial fibrin layers disappeared in two cases and were reduced by more than half in the third. Effects on systemic coagulation indices and complications related to intrapericardial lysis were not observed.

I present a method of using fibrin sealing for anastomosis in canaliculocystostomy. A microsurgical resection of the stenosis of the common canaliculus is followed by silicone intubation of the lacrimal apparatus and fibrin sealing of the anastomosis of the canaliculi and the lacrimal sac. A prospective randomized study was conducted on 100 patients operated upon for oesophageal diseases to evaluate the usefulness of fibrin glue in reinforcing oesophageal anastomoses. The anastomoses were located in the neck, the chest or the lower mediastinum. The operative mortality rate, the number and severity of fistulae and the incidence of anastomotic stenosis were studied. This series was insufficient to demonstrate that fibrin glue was effective in this type of surgery.

Fibrin sealant is used to close perforated or preperforated corneal ulcers. In addition to the usual advantages of cyanoacrylates it is degraded physiologically and provides a good support for corneal healing. Corneal grafting can be avoided when contraindicated or postponed when conditions allow. This technique has been successful in nine eyes of eight patients.

To demonstrate the exact localization of immunoglobulin and fibrin deposits in skin lesions of lichen planus, we employed the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique, both light and electron microscopically.
