Sheathed microfilariae (mean length 278 +/- 10 microns SEM; mean width 7.2 +/- 0.8 microns) were detected in the blood of 7/14 housed camels (Camelus dromedarius). Microfilaraemic camels of either sex were inappetent, lethargic, reluctant to move and exhibited weakness in the hind limbs; some remained in sternal recumbency. Cardiac disorders, orchitis and skin nodules were conspicuously absent. The microfilariae showed a biphasic pattern in the blood that peaked at 20:00 and plateaued between 04:00 and 06:00. Adult filarial worms were recovered from the mesenteric and femoral arteries. Marked

A programme was launched in 1986 for the control of brugian filariasis in an area of high endemicity in southern India. Sustained community involvement was achieved by integrating economic measures to improve the lot of the people with the creation of widespread awareness about the cause of the disease and about the possibilities of combating it.

The lymphatic filariases, Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and B. timori, infect nearly 100 million people throughout the tropics, but mainly in Africa and southeast Asia. Over 900 million people live in endemic, areas at risk to the infection. The filarial parasites reproduce slowly, whereas their mosquito vectors are quickly-reproducing opportunists. Thus, although vector control can reduce the risk of transmission, the parasite itself would seem a more vulnerable target for prolonged attack. In this article, Felix Partono discusses the clinical diagnosis of f lariasis and argues that th

A patient with lymphatic filariasis, developing the nephrotic syndrome is reported. Renal biopsy showed a diffuse mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis with C3 deposition in the glomeruli. Glomerulonephritis associated with filariasis has been reported previously, however definite identification of filarial antigen in glomerular deposits or of specific antibodies in kidney eluates is still awaiting.

Metrifonate, in doses of 10 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days, demonstrated partial microfilaricidal activity against Onchocerca volvulus in humans. Higher doses were not investigated because of the toxic reactions obtained and the absence of monitoring of the blood cholinesterase levels. Spaced doses of 10 mg/kg every 2 weeks or once monthly up to 3 doses showed neither micro- nor macrofilaricidal activity against Wuchereria bancrofti.

Infection with the filarial nematodes that cause diseases such as lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis represent major public health challenges. With millions of people at risk of infection, new strategies for treatment or prevention are urgently needed. More complete understanding of the host immune system's ability to control and eliminate the infection is an important step towards fighting these debilitating infectious diseases. Neutrophils are innate immune cells that are rapidly recruited to inflamed or infected tissues and while considered primarily anti-microbial, there is increasing…

Filariasis of the breast presenting as a breast lump and clinically simulating as breast tumour is an unusual presentation. The present case is of a 30 years old female complaining of breast lump and on fine needle aspiration revealed microfilaria.

The history of the development of ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine for the treatment of human filarial infections is relatively well known and documented. The story of how albendazole became involved in the global elimination programmes is, however, less well known. This review examines the thinking and the processes behind the development of albendazole, from the first ideas in the mid 1980s to the establishment of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis. Throughout, the approaches were essentially different from those of traditional drug development and, in the end, there was…

BACKGROUND: Human infection with Wuchereria bancrofti causes a disabling parasitic disease known as lymphatic filariasis, which is a major public health and socio-economic problem in many parts of the world. At the onset of the study, little was known of the distribution of filariasis and its current importance as a public health problem in Nepal. METHODS: Epidemiological mapping was undertaken to determine the prevalence of infection by Wuchereria bancrofti in 37 districts of Nepal between July to December 2001. The study population above 15 years of age was selected, and the immunochromatogr…
