Financial hardship, positive financial behaviour, and behavioural health outcomes among U.S. soldiers.

INTRODUCTION: Financial well-being is an ongoing concern among military personnel, and more research is needed to understand the implications of both financial hardship and positive financial behaviours on behavioural health and well-being. METHODS: Using a sample of active duty U.S. Army personnel (N = 850), the authors estimated the prevalence of self-reported past-year financial hardships and positive financial behaviors and examined the relationship of these factors with behavioural health. RESULTS: At least one financial hardship was reported by 31% of participants, whereas 74% engaged

Constructing the scale to measure financial toxicity in cancer patients for Low-middle income countries (FT-LM) by using the modified Delphi method.

BACKGROUND: Lower socioeconomic status is associated with increased incidence and poorer treatment outcomes among cancer patients. Most of the studies related to financial toxicity have been done in high income countries and hence tools to capture the same are not relevant to our context. This study incorporated multiple cancer hospitals of Nepal with an intent to develop a scale for assessing the financial toxicity in cancer patients in Low middle income countries (LMICs), recognizing a gap in existing literature and measurement tools predominantly developed for high income countries. METHOD

Financial toxicity as a structural barrier to cervical cancer treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Cervical cancer remains one of the most common and preventable cancers among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite established curative treatments, most women present with locally advanced disease and many fail to complete therapy. Financial toxicity encompassing, direct medical costs, non-medical expenditures, income loss, and psychological distress, is an underrecognized but potentially important contributor to this treatment gap. This narrative review examines evidence on the magnitude, structural drivers, and consequences of financial toxicity in cervical cancer care across sub-Saharan Afri

Association of Personal Credit Data With Financial Hardship and Treatment Outcomes in Patients With Multiple Myeloma.

INTRODUCTION: Financial difficulty among patients with multiple myeloma (MM) is linked to reduced treatment adherence and worse outcomes. However, it is usually measured through patient questionnaires, which may be inconsistently offered or poorly completed. We hypothesized that credit data could detect financial difficulty and assessed its relationship with treatment outcomes. METHODS: We conducted retrospective analyses using an integrated database with cancer registry data, insurance claims, and credit data for Western Washington State patients with MM diagnosed between 2012 to 2020. Studying Guaranteed Income in Oncology: Lessons Learned From Launching the Guaranteed Income and Financial Treatment Trial.

By targeting income and financial stress as key social determinants of health, unconditional cash transfers (UCTs) may improve cancer health outcomes and reduce cancer health disparities. Described in policy circles as guaranteed or basic income, UCTs have been shown to improve a range of health outcomes in low-income populations but have not yet been examined as a targeted intervention for people with cancer. This article describes some of the lessons learned from launching the Guaranteed Income and Financial Treatment trial, a two-arm randomized controlled trial of UCTs in oncology, along wi

Financial hardship among patients suffering from neglected tropical diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis of global literature.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) mainly affect underprivileged populations, potentially resulting in catastrophic health spending (CHS) and impoverishment from out-of-pocket (OOP) costs. This systematic review aimed to summarize the financial hardship caused by NTDs. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, EconLit, OpenGrey, and EBSCO Open Dissertations, for articles reporting financial hardship caused by NTDs from database inception to January 1, 2023. We summarized the study findings and methodological characteristics. Meta-analyses were performed to pool the prevalence of CHS.

Economic Burden among Patients with Vitiligo in the United States: A Retrospective Database Claims Study.

Patients with vitiligo incur direct and indirect costs associated with their condition; however, data regarding the economic burden of vitiligo are scarce and outdated. In this retrospective cohort analysis of the Merative MarketScan Commercial Database, healthcare costs and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) were evaluated among United States patients with vitiligo. Patients with vitiligo were matched (1:2) with individuals without vitiligo (controls) between January 2007 and December 2021. Outcomes included all-cause and vitiligo-related costs (2021 dollars) and all-cause HCRU, including

Direct economic burden of mental health disorders associated with polycystic ovary syndrome: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormone disorder affecting about one in seven reproductive-aged women worldwide and approximately 6 million women in the United States (U.S.). PCOS can be a significant burden to those affected and is associated with an increased prevalence of mental health (MH) disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and postpartum depression. We undertook this study to determine the excess economic burden associated with MH disorders in women with PCOS in order to allow for a more accurate prioritization of the disorder as a pub

Economic burden of beta-thalassaemia major receiving hypertransfusion therapy at a public hospital in Mumbai.

Background Treating beta-thalassaemia major may entail high costs with considerable out-of-pocket expenditure. Therefore, determination and valuation of the economic costs of a common haemoglobinopathy such as beta-thalassaemia major in India may provide insights to evolve policies for reduction or elimination of the disease. We estimated economic burden of beta-thalassaemia major in Mumbai in terms of cost to the family and the healthcare system. Methods This single-centre, prospective, cross-sectional, non-interventional study included children <12 years of age treated at the thalassaemia da

Financial burden in adults with chronic liver disease: A scoping review.

The economic burden of chronic liver disease is rising; however, the financial impact of chronic liver disease on patients and families has been underexplored. We performed a scoping review to identify studies examining financial burden (patient/family health care expenditures), financial distress (material, behavioral, and psychological consequences of financial burden), and financial toxicity (adverse health outcomes of financial distress) experienced by patients with chronic liver disease and their families. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science online databa
