Dynamic tenodesis of the finger extensors to improve hand function after brachial plexus injury.

The term "plexic hand" refers to hand and wrist involvement in traumatic brachial plexus injuries and to remaining deficits after nerve surgery has been performed. From January 2000 to March 2008, reconstructive surgery (dynamic tenodesis) was performed on seven patients with C5, 6, 7, and 8 nerve root lesions of the brachial plexus to restore wrist and finger extension. This procedure has been used in seven patients (one female). Two patients with a lesion of the brachial plexus sustained a fracture of the affected limb. Preliminary nerve repair operations were required in four cases. One hun

Flexor Tendon Injuries in Zone 3: A Comprehensive Review and Case Report on Flexor Digitorum Profundus Rupture of the Middle Finger.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon within flexor zone 3 is exceptionally rare and easily mistaken for the far more common zone 1 "Jersey finger" lesion. To the best of our knowledge, only two such middle-finger cases have been documented over the past six decades. Reporting this case, together with a literature synthesis, highlights the diagnostic pitfalls and supports timely, tendon-preserving intervention. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old right-hand-dominant White male felt a sudden snap in his right palm while restraining a dog leash, followed by an inability

Rotational Deformity of Long Finger Caused by Isolated Metacarpophalangeal Joint Capsular Injury: A Case Report.

CASE: A 49-year-old woman presented after a leash-pulling injury with ring and small finger proximal phalanx fractures. Pain and supination of the long finger metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint were noted without collateral ligament injury on examination or imaging. Surgical exploration noted isolated capsular avulsion, which was repaired with restoration of alignment and full range of motion with relief of pain and instability at 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: This is a unique case of isolated finger MCP capsular injury causing rotatory instability. Surgeons should consider exploration and repai

Cryotherapy-Induced Full-Thickness Digital Frostbite Injury Reconstructed With Reverse Cross-Finger Flap.

We present a rare case of full-thickness frostbite injury following cryotherapeutic treatment for a viral digital wart. Treatment of abnormal skin growths secondary to cutaneous infection by human papillomavirus (ie, warts) often is sought because of their unsightly appearance. Numerous treatment modalities exist, including topical, systemic, surgical, and cryotherapeutic options. Cryotherapy (eg, liquid nitrogen) represents a common treatment option for cutaneous warts. Complications secondary to cryotherapy are infrequent and generally minor (eg, skin dyspigmentation or transient dysesthesia

Suture Tape Augmentation for the Repair of Index Finger Radial Collateral Ligament Injury: A Biomechanical Study.

PURPOSE: Despite their clinical importance in maintaining the stability of the pinch mechanism, injuries of the radial collateral ligament (RCL) of the index finger may be underrecognized and underreported. The purpose of this biomechanical study was to compare the repair of index finger RCL tears with either a standard suture anchor or suture tape augmentation. METHODS: The index fingers from 24 fresh-frozen human cadavers underwent repair of torn RCLs using either a standard suture anchor or suture tape augmentation. Following the repairs, the initial displacement of the repair with a 3-N u

Bone-Penetrating TASER Bolt: A Rare Case of Penetrating Injury to the Middle Phalanx of the Little Finger.

TASER© (Axon Enterprise, Scottsdale, Arizona) is a type of electric gun that delivers a sudden shock to temporarily disable a human subject. It is used by law enforcement, as well as civilians, worldwide. Despite its wide use as a "non-lethal" form of self-defence, it can lead to serious injuries. We are presenting a rare case report of a 28-year-old man who presented to our Plastic Surgery Trauma Service following a penetrating TASER bolt injury to the middle phalanx of his left little finger.

Nerve Transfers for the Restoration of Wrist, Finger, and Thumb Extension After High Radial Nerve Injury.

High radial nerve injury is a common pattern of peripheral nerve injury most often associated with orthopedic trauma. Nerve transfers to the wrist and finger extensors, often from the median nerve, offer several advantages when compared to nerve repair or grafting and tendon transfer. In this article, we discuss the forearm anatomy pertinent to performing these nerve transfers and review the literature surrounding nerve transfers for wrist, finger, and thumb extension. A suggested algorithm for management of acute traumatic high radial nerve palsy is offered, and our preferred surgical techniq

Effectiveness of a novel finger range-of-motion brace for extensor tendon injury: a report of 10 patients.

BACKGROUND: Extensor tendon injuries require surgical repair, followed by rehabilitation to ensure optimal outcomes. Immobilization has been the cornerstone of postoperative management. However, immobilization after surgery frequently makes the finger stiffness, often resulting in reduced functionality and quality of life for patients. Recent studies indicate that early controlled motion can significantly improve outcomes, but safe early range of motion (ROM) exercise is a significant clinical challenge. This article aims to check the efficacy of the novel designed finger ROM brace for prevent

Recurrent syncope after a finger injury and induced monomorphic ventricular tachycardia: Really Brugada syndrome?

Brugada syndrome is an arrhythmogenic disease with often fatal outcome in otherwise healthy and young individuals. Anamnesis and ECG are cornerstones in a syncope workup. In our case, a 27-year-old male presented to the emergency department due to recurrent syncope. Repeated 12‑lead-ECGs revealed a type 2 Brugada pattern. A positive drug challenge suggested a Brugada syndrome and electrophysiological testing reproducibly induced monomorphic ventricular tachycardia. Consequently, an ICD was implanted for secondary prevention. On 2-year follow-up, the patient remained free from other arrhythmic

High-resolution 3-T MRI of the fingers: review of anatomy and common tendon and ligament injuries.

OBJECTIVE. With high-resolution 3-T MRI, the complex anatomy of the fingers can be imaged in exquisite detail to provide an accurate diagnosis of clinically important ligament and tendon injuries. CONCLUSION. We present our 3-T MRI protocol using a dedicated hand-and-wrist coil and review normal MRI anatomy of the fingers. We emphasize a systematic approach to the interpretation of finger MRI examinations and illustrate this approach with examples of tendon and ligament abnormalities.

Wrist and Finger Torque Sensor for the quantification of upper limb motor impairments following brain injury.

This paper details the design of the Wrist and Finger Torque Sensing module (WFTS): a lightweight, portable device that measures isometric wrist and finger flexion and extension joint torques. The WFTS can be used in combination with rehabilitation robots such as the ACT-3D, with isometric measurement stations, or as a stand-alone device. Because many robotic devices are limited in that they involve the hand in isolation, the WFTS is designed to investigate abnormal joint torque coupling at the paretic wrist and fingers in individuals with adult-onset stroke or childhood hemiplegia during 3D a

[The most common tendon injury in sports--hammer finger. Origin, classification, diagnosis and rational therapy].

The closed rupture of the distal digital extensor tendon at its attachment on the terminal phalanx the so-called mallet finger - is seen very often in ball games ("basketball finger", "baseball finger"). Closed rupture with and without a bony fragment can be distinguished. We demonstrate a rational and anatomy related way of treatment.

Immersive virtual reality for functional hand and finger rehabilitation: results from a randomized controlled trial in 150 patients after traumatic hand injuries.

Traumatic hand injuries frequently result in prolonged functional impairment. Adherence to conventional rehabilitation is frequently limited by pain, fatigue, and low engagement. Virtual reality systems may increase training volume, but many rely on handheld controllers and lack integration. StableHandVR is an immersive, gamified VR application using optical hand tracking for task-oriented functional hand and finger rehabilitation. In a single-center randomized controlled trial, 150 inpatients undergoing rehabilitation after traumatic hand injuries were assigned to either the StableHandVR inte
