Seven primate distal phalanges have been identified from two middle Eocene fossil localities (Locality 1 and Nanbaotou) in the Yuanqu Basin, China, providing the first evidence of distal phalangeal morphology in Asian Eocene adapiform and eosimiid primates. The bones are best allocated to the basal anthropoid Eosimias centennicus and to hoanghoniine adapiforms. All distal phalangeal specimens display a morphology consistent with nail-bearing fingers and toes. The hallucal distal phalanx of the basal anthropoid Eosimias is more similar to that of primitive tarsiiforms than to crown group anthro

Immobilization after surgical fixation for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures induces a decay in manual dexterity. Action Observation and Motor Imagery (AOMI) mitigate motor performance decline during hand immobilization, and early sleep after such approaches has been reported to further enhance the consolidation of motor learning in healthy subjects. Here, we investigated the effects of early sleep after AOMI training sessions in subjects with immobilization after surgical fixation for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. Fifty-four subjects with immobilization of fourth and fifth fingers af

We describe an unusual case of a 12-year-old boy who presented with a loss of motion in the ring finger caused by 2 separate periosteal chondromas involving the proximal and middle phalanges. Range of motion improved and recurrence did not occur at the 5-year follow-up after marginal excision of both lesions.

Hyperphalangism, characterized by an extra phalanx between the phalanges of a finger is a rare congenital anomaly. Five cases show some of the different manifestations of this rare congenital anomaly. Brachyhyperphalangism can be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with good penetrance, but can also simply be one manifestation of a group of congenital abnormalities.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to elucidate the epidemiology and distribution of hand fractures in Singapore.
METHODS: A total of 701 hand fractures in 596 patients aged 21 years and above from a single centre were reviewed from 2010 to 2011. Details regarding the patient demographics, occupation, mechanism of injury, associated injuries and treatment were obtained.
RESULTS: Hand fractures were particularly significant in patients between the ages of 21 and 40 years 58.9% of the total cases. The relative risk of hand fractures in males was 5.5 times greater than that in females. The

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the modified intramedullary fixation with two Kirschner wires for extra-articular fracture of the proximal phalangeal base.
METHODS: Between June 2012 and November 2015, 18 cases (18 fingers) of fresh extra-articular fracture of the proximal phalangeal base were treated, including 16 males and 2 females with an average age of 31 years (range, 21-57 years). The causes included strike injury in 10 cases, fall injury in 4 cases, mechanical injury in 1 case, twist injury in 1 case, crush injury in 1 case, and cutting injury in 1 case. The injured finger

The authors describe, in the first report of this type of replantation surgery, a high success rate using delayed venous anastomosis in 16 consecutive distal phalangeal replantations under digital block. Among these replantations, seven fingers (43.8 percent) showed postoperative venous congestion and five fingers were reoperated on with delayed venous drainage under digital block. All the reoperated fingers were successfully drained by additional single or double venous drainage with a vein graft. As a result, 13 fingers survived (81.3 percent success rate). All operations were performed unde

A five-year-old boy with Möbius syndrome, Poland's anomaly, and dextrocardia is described. These malformations have not been previously reported. The propositus had ipsilateral absence of the sternal portion of the pectoralis major muscle associated with acromicria, syndactyly, brachydactyly of the index, middle, ring, and fifth finger, as well as radiological evidence of hypoplasia of the index middle and ring fingers, associated with syndactylia and absent middle phalanges.

Enchondroma is a benign growth of cartilage arising in the bone metaphysis as a solitary or multiple primary lesions. The form of multiple enchondromatosis with unilateral predominance is termed Ollier's disease. We have recently treated a case of Ollier's disease with the chief complaint of deformity of the left hand. The patient was an 11-year-old boy. Radiographic examination showed honeycombed clear spaces in the metaphyses of the middle and proximal phalanges of the left ring and little fingers as well as of the fourth and fifth metacarpals, and thinning of the cortex of these bones, but

Treatment and result of burned total hand was reported here in 4 hands (4 cases). According to the treatment and anatomical characteristics, burned hand was divided into 4 areas: dorsum of hand, dorsum of finger, thenar-wrist area and volar-digit area. The treatment of total hand in third degree burns included emergency escharotomy of hand and digits, early escharotomy and immediate skin grafting on the dorsum of hand, thenar-wrist and volar-digit area. But on the dorsum of digit area this sort of hand was often deepen to the phalangeal bones and joints. After healing of early graft, the expos

We report a case of Olier's disease associated with finger agenesis in order to study the contribution of radiography in its diagnosis. It was a 7-year-old boy with no pathological history. He was received at the Medical Clinic "Les Etoiles" in Bamako on 07/20/2023 for malformation assessment. Radiographic exploration of the hands and feet had objectified multiple enchondromatosis of the hands and right knee associated with agenesis of the phalanges of the 1st and 2nd rays of the right hand. The radiologist must consider this in the face of bone deformities occurring at a young age.

Toe injuries are common in the emergency department and most of them are treated conservatively. In some circumstances, these injuries can present as a physeal fracture with concomitant soft-tissue injury affecting the nail bed and resulting in a hidden open fracture. To adequately treat these patients, a high index of suspicion is needed to diagnose and treat the open fractures and to prevent complications such as infection, osteomyelitis, malunion and premature physeal arrest. We report a case of a patient that was admitted to the hospital with a Salter-Harris type I fracture of the distal ph

A mallet finger is a common injury that results from a sudden flexion force on an extended distal phalanx or rarely, from hyperextension of the distal interphalangeal joint. Mallet finger can be purely tendinous or bony when associated with an avulsion fracture. The management of this injury is largely conservative with the use of a splint, although surgery may be indicated for select patients. There is little consensus on the indications for surgery or the suitable surgical technique. The aim of this review article is to provide a pragmatic and evidence-based approach to mallet finger that wi

Distraction osteogenesis has become the most used method for bone lengthening and deformity correction including the bones of the hand and foot. The principle techniques used for hand bone lengthening in posttraumatic and congenital conditions using available external fixators are based on this method. We present the technical specifications and surgical techniques with the use of a mini-fixator that was specially designed for short tubular bones. The surgical techniques of lengthening and web space skin stock creation for future web-pasty are supplied with the diagrams of their application to

Dactylitis is a typical phenomenon in psoriatic arthritis, presenting as a "sausage-shaped" finger. Although classically the distal interphalangeal joints are affected, proximal interphalangeal joints and metacarpophalangeal joints are frequently involved. We present a patient who presented with severe psoriatic arthritis of the proximal interphalangeal joint, leading to subtotal disappearance of the phalangeal bones and important shortening of the fourth finger after 10 years of evolution.

Although many patterns of metacarpal abnormalities have been described, the congenital anomaly of complete or partial absence of the fifth metacarpal has not been well defined. This article reports on seven patients with longitudinal partial or complete absence of the fifth metacarpal with the ulna and the three phalanges of the little finger present.

One hundred and twenty-six cases of symbrachydactyly were analyzed roentgenographically and clinically. This curious anomaly of the hand is sporadic and of unknown etiology. It is predominantly one-sided, either isolated or combined with ipsilateral pectoral muscle defect (fifty-one cases). On X-ray pictures, the skeletal abnormalities of the hands ranged from mild involvement featured with hypoplastic or aplastic middle phalanges to the most severe involvement in which all the phalanges were missing, providing a continuous spectrum. Even in the mildly affected hands hypoplasia involves all th

We report the results of long-term follow-up after Vickers' physiolysis of the trapezoidal delta phalanx in a boy aged five year and six months with bilateral clinodactyly of the little finger. Radial deviation of the little finger was corrected from 36 degrees to 15 degrees on the left, and from 35 degrees to 15 degrees on the right at last follow-up six years and five months after surgery. The patient's parents were satisfied with the cosmetic appearance. X-ray film showed the abnormal distal epiphyses of the middle phalanges of the little fingers had disappeared.
