Biomechanical analysis of composite bone plates for tibial oblique fracture repair using finite element analysis.

Tibial fractures are a common type of long bone injuries, requiring solid fixation for quicker bone healing and functional recovery. Metallic plates, although widely use, have been associated to stress shielding due to their enhanced stiffness, which can prevent callus formation and adversely affect the long-term outcomes. This study develops and assesses composite bone plates reinforced with unidirectional carbon fibres in different stacking sequences, comparing their biomechanical performance with titanium plates through finite element (FE) analysis. A 3D model of the tibia with a 1 mm obliq

Comparative Finite Element Analysis of Three Acetabular Plate Designs with Different Bridge Geometries.

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fractures are complex injuries of the hip joint. Careful design of fixation plates is crucial for achieving stable osteosynthesis, especially in patients with poor bone quality. Finite element analysis (FEA) is widely used for biomechanical evaluation of orthopedic implants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a comparative finite element analysis of three acetabular plate designs differing in bridge geometry and to identify the configuration with the most favourable biomechanical performance. We hypothesized that a plate with two parallel bridges would prov

Exploring the Causes of Suture Needle Loss Through Simulation and Finite Element Analysis.

The intraoperative loss of suture needles can prolong procedures and compromise safety, often occurring when a needle holder is unintentionally dropped and opens. This study explored the mechanism of needle loss through a nationwide survey, controlled drop simulations, and finite element analysis. Among 3649 OR nurses surveyed, 75.4% identified instrument transfer-specifically dropping the needle holder onto the instrument table-as the most common cause of loss. In 1500 simulated drops, unexpected opening occurred in 30.6% of cases, primarily when the holder landed flat or on its ring. Finite

Novel artificial transverse atlantal ligament reconstruction for atlantoaxial instability: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The transverse atlantal ligament (TAL) serves as a crucial anatomical structure in maintaining atlantoaxial stability. Currently, fusion surgery remains the primary therapeutic approach for atlantoaxial instability (AAI) resulting from TAL rupture. However, this surgical intervention inevitably leads to the loss of atlantoaxial mobility and may accelerate degeneration of adjacent segments. Reconstruction of the TAL may emerge as a potential solution to address these clinical challenges. The objective of this study is to evaluate the functionality and stability of an artificial tran

Canine stress analysis of two clear aligner attachment designs: A finite element study.

A finite element analysis compared the stress distribution profiles of a single rectangular attachment against a dual semicircular configuration to resolve the biomechanical intricacies of achieving bodily canine translation with clear aligners. Hence, three-dimensional model of the maxilla was generated to simulate stress propagation across the teeth, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone under standardized loading conditions. Von mises stress assessment revealed that the rectangular geometry induced markedly higher stress concentrations (0.1922 MPa), suggesting an elevated risk of root reso

Femoral finite element analysis of a novel cementless revision total knee arthroplasty system.

Revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA) is a highly complex procedure challenged by bone defects and compromised biomechanical stability, which may threaten implant fixation and long-term survivorship. This study aimed to introduce a novel cementless RTKA system and evaluate the resulting femoral initial stability. A novel cementless femoral RTKA system based on metaphyseal and biological fixation, comprising a femoral condyle component, metaphyseal cone, and optional intramedullary stems and metal augments, was evaluated using finite element analysis. The initial stability of the system was a

Biomechanical response of human skull to impact by three-dimensional finite element analysis.

Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from the impact of the human skull is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The knowledge of the biomechanics of such injuries is essential for the effective design of protective headgear. This study investigates the biomechanical responses of a human skull subjected to an impact with a rigid wall. Finite element analyses were performed by impacting various skull locations, and the utility concept approach was introduced to rank skull vulnerability. Time history plots of the velocity, acceleration and energy were extracted to determine the dynamic respo

Finite element mechanical analysis of rigid internal fixation selection for distal femur fractures.

Background and Objective.Compared with lateral locking plate (LLP) fixation, dual-plate (DP) fixation has not demonstrated superior clinical outcomes in the treatment of distal femur fractures. We propose that this discrepancy arises from unclear indications. This study examining the influence of varying metaphyseal defect sizes on the mechanical behavior of the two fixation constructs, provides insight into defining their appropriate clinical indications.Methods.Finite element analysis was conducted to compare the biomechanical performance of LLP-only versus DP fixation in AO/ASIF type C2 fra

Combined experimental and micro finite element analysis of CF/PEEK pedicle screw pullout.

PURPOSE: Pedicle screw pull-out remains a challenge in thoracolumbar spine fixation, contributing to fixation failure. Computational simulations offer a pathway to optimize screw designs across diverse materials and bone qualities towards reducing failure rates. Non-linear explicit micro-finite element (μFE) simulation was hypothesized to accurately predict pullout forces of CF/PEEK screws, with bone volume fraction (BV/TV) influencing performance. This study aimed to validate the μFE model and assess BV/TV effects on the basis of experimental testing. METHODS: Thirteen cadaveric vertebrae we

Finite element analysis (FEA) of stress distribution in platform-switched short dental implants.

The distribution of stress on short platform switched dental implants is of interest. Hence, the mandibular posterior molar area was modelled using a three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) with a continuous 1.5 mm cortical bone thickness and an inner cancellous bone core. The implants used in the study were 5 mm long, 4.5 mm wide and 3.5 mm wide at the abutments. 120 N of force was applied in both the vertical and oblique (20° and 35°) directions to create a realistic simulation. ANSYS Workbench was generated for each model. Von Mises stress was assessed in the cortical and cancellous b

Probabilistic Finite Element Analysis of Human Rib Biomechanics: A Framework for Improved Generalizability.

In dynamic impact events, thoracic injuries often involve rib fractures, which are closely related to injury severity. Previous studies have investigated the behavior of isolated ribs under impact loading conditions, but often neglected the variability in anatomical shape and tissue material properties. In this study, we used probabilistic finite element analysis and statistical shape modeling to investigate the effect of population-wide variability in rib cortical bone tissue mechanical properties and rib shape on the biomechanical response of the rib to impact loading. Using the probabilisti

Patient-specific finite element analysis for assessing hip fracture risk in aging populations.

The femur is one of the most important bone in the human body, as it supports the body's weight and helps with movement. The aging global population presents a significant challenge, leading to an increasing demand for artificial joints, particularly in knee and hip replacements, which are among the most prevalent surgical procedures worldwide. This study focuses on hip fractures, a common consequence of osteoporotic fractures in the elderly population. To accurately predict individual bone properties and assess fracture risk, patient-specific finite element models (FEM) were developed using C

Elucidating interfacial failure of cervical restorations using damage mechanics: A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although clinical studies have suggested a link between non-axial forces and reduced longevity of cervical restorations, the underlying mechanisms require further numerical investigation. This in-silico study employed a cohesive zone model (CZM) to investigate interfacial damage in a cervical restoration subjected to different load directions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A plane strain model of a maxillary premolar was established, with a wedge-shaped buccal cervical restoration. To simulate debonding, the restoration-tooth interface was modeled by the CZM, which defines the st
