The first plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (pAmpC KP) isolate was detected in December 2009 in Hungary. Hungarian microbiological laboratories were asked to send all KP strains showing cefoxitin resistance and decreased susceptibility or resistance to any third-generation cephalosporins to the Reference Laboratories at the National Center for Epidemiology. Investigation was conducted in order to outline spatio-temporal distribution and genetic characterization of pAmpC-KP isolates in Hungary. Between December 2009 and December 2013, 312 consecutive KP clinical

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important causative agent of gastroenteritis, with the consumption of contaminated seafood being the major transmission route. Resistance to penicillin is common among V. parahaemolyticus strains, whereas cephalosporin resistance remains rare. In an attempt to assess the current prevalence and characteristics of antibiotic resistance of this pathogen in common food samples, a total of 54 (17% of the total samples) V. parahaemolyticus strains were isolated from 318 meat and seafood samples purchased from supermarkets and wet markets in Shenzhen, China, in 2013. BACKGROUND: Cephalosporin administration in patients with a history of penicillin allergy is controversial. Studies looking at the safety of cephalosporin in patients with a history of penicillin allergy lacked a control group, had a small number of patients, and/or lacked confirmation of penicillin allergy by penicillin skin testing. The purpose of this study was to determine whether patients with penicillin allergy were at increased risk of adverse drug reactions when administered cephalosporin.
METHODS: A cohort study of patients with a history of penicillin allergy and a positive or negat

During 1967 to 1985, three cases of listeriosis were reported in Algeria; at that time Listeria monocytogenes caused several thousand cases of meningitis and sepsis in the world. In order to determine the frequency and bacteriologic characteristics of strain isolated in Algeria, a prospective investigation was carried from 1985 to 1989 in humans and animals samples. Sensitivity tests to antibiotics (MIC) point out that all isolates strains are resistant to cephalosporins (first and third generation), but are susceptible to Ampicillin and Gentamicin which ought to constitute the treatment basis

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an opportunistic organism that is usually seen in immunocompromised or immunosuppressed patients. It is an aerobic gram-negative rod, often confused with other more commonly seen gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The organism is usually sensitive to extended spectrum penicillins such as carbenicillin and usually resistant to aminoglycosides and first generation cephalosporins. We wish to describe a corneal ulcer from A. xylosoxidans that developed in a patient wearing a therapeutic soft contact lens. The patient did not have a preexisting micr

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to describe penicillin G susceptibility, blaZ diversity, and genetic determinants of the cefazolin inoculum effect (CfzIE) among MSSA bloodstream isolates.
METHODS: The first three non-duplicate MSSA isolates recovered each month from blood cultures at our French university hospital between January 2010 and December 2023 were selected. Whole-genome sequencing was performed using the Illumina NextSeq platform to characterize blaZ and its genetic context. Susceptibility to penicillin G and the CfzIE were assessed using phenotypic methods.
RESULTS: Among 488 MSSA is

Oculogyric crisis is a neurologic adverse event characterized by bilateral dystonic, usually upward, conjugate eye deviations. Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin and is widely used in clinical practice in childhood. Confusion, encephalopathy, coma, myoclonus, nonconvulsive status epilepticus, and seizures have been described with the use of cephalosporins. We presented a cefixime-induced oculogyric crisis in a 7-year-old boy during the treatment of urinary tract infection, and this is the first case of cefixime-induced oculogyric crisis whose ocular symptoms gradually disappeared wit

Salmonella is one of the most important foodborne and zoonotic pathogens, and monophasic S. Typhimurium is ranked among the top-five Salmonella serovars causing animal and human infections worldwide. Resistance to the third- and higher-generation cephalosporins in Salmonella has attracted great attention. Bacteria are frequently exposed to sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antimicrobials that can trigger diverse adaptive responses such as biofilm formation. Biofilms can promote bacterial defense to external and internal harsh conditions. This study aimed to investigate the ef

Salmonella spp. is one of the most common foodborne pathogens in humans. Here, we summarize the laboratory surveillance data of human non-typhoidal salmonellosis in Greece for 2003-2020. The total number of samples declined over the study period (p < 0.001). Of the 193 identified serotypes, S. Enteritidis was the most common (52.8%), followed by S. Typhimurium (11.5%), monophasic S. Typhimurium 1,4,[5],12:i:- (4.4%), S. Bovismorbificans (3.4%) and S. Oranienburg (2.4%). The isolation rate of S. Enteritidis declined (p < 0.001), followed by an increase of the less common serotypes. Monophasic S

The rapidly increasing prevalence and spread of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella worldwide have become a thorny problem that poses a serious threat to human health. It is speculated that antibiotic abuse, frequent traveling, and mass gatherings accelerate this threat. To explore this hypothesis, we investigated 13 Salmonella isolates from Medina, Saudi Arabia and 15 from China as the control group using typical methods of serotype identification, antibiotic resistance tests, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). Our results indicated that the isolates

BACKGROUND: Co-resistance against the first-line antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol and trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole or multidrug resistance (MDR) is common in non typhoid Salmonella (NTS). Use of alternative antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones or third generation cephalosporins is threatened by increasing resistance, but remains poorly documented in Central-Africa.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: As part of a microbiological surveillance study in DR Congo, blood cultures were collected between 2007 and 2011. Isolated NTS were assessed for serotype and antimicrobial resistance includ

BACKGROUND: Reports of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in community hospitals are limited, with the major focus on specific agents, small settings, or short time periods. Here we present the outcomes of cost control, consumption restraint, and quality of care after a 3-year multidisciplinary ASP in a 415-bed community public teaching hospital.
METHODS: Three strategies for improving antimicrobial stewardship were implemented: education, clinical pharmacists-based intervention, and regular outcome announcement. The steering panel of the program was a committee composed of infection s

Within a 6-year period from January 1991 to December 1996, 19 patients with Salmonella choleraesuis bacteremia were enrolled for clinical and microbiological analysis. Young children, the elderly and patients with hematological malignancy (36.8%), liver cirrhosis (26.3%), systemic lupus erythematosus (10.5%), chronic renal impairment (10.5%), and peptic ulcer (10.5%) were at high risk of this infection. The ratio of male to female was 3:1. Three cases (15.8%) were nosocomially acquired. Fever (89.5%), chills (57.9%) and anorexia (52.6%) were the most common clinical manifestations. Seven patie

Urinary tract infections are very common during pregnancy. Escherichia coli is the most common pathogen isolated from pregnant women. Ampicillin should not be used because of its high resistance to Escherichia coli. Pyelonephritis can cause morbidity and can be life-threatening to both mother and fetus. Second and third-generation cephalosporins are recommended for treatment, administered initially intravenously during hospitalization. Cultures and the study of virulence factors of uropathogenic Escherichia coli are recommended for the adequate management of pyelonephritis. The lower genital t

According to the genetic relationships among Gram-negative bacilli the genus Pasteurella is included with the genus Haemophilus and the genus Acinobacillus within the family Pasteurellacae. Pasteurella multocida, the type species, is responsible for the majority of human Pasteurella infections. P. multocida is a member of the normal flora in the upper respiratory tract of many mammals or birds. It causes sporadic or epidemic diseases among different animal species, particularly pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis in swine in intensive breeding stations. The most common human infection with P. mult

The objective was to determine the frequency of early symptomatic relapses following antibiotic treatment for group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) tonsillopharyngitis in children from Rochester, New York; Houston, Texas; Spokane, Washington; and Los Angeles, California (2004--2006). The study included 4278 patients. The proportion with a bacteriologic relapse of GABHS tonsillopharyngitis within 1 to 5 days of completing a 10-day treatment course was 8% (penicillin and bicillin), 6% (amoxicillin), 2% (first-generation cephalosporin), and 1% (second-generation and third-generation cephal

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases account for the third most common cause of neonatal deaths. Globally, antibiotic resistance (ABR) has been increasingly challenging neonatal sepsis treatment, with 26 to 84% of gram-negative bacteria resistant to third-generation cephalosporins. In sub-Saharan Africa, limited evidence is available regarding the neonatal microbiology and ABR. To our knowledge, no studies have assessed neonatal bacterial infections and ABR in Central-African Republic (CAR). Therefore, this study aimed to describe the pathogens isolated and their specific ABR among patients with su

The consensus conference convened by the French Language Society for Infectious Disease at Lille in 1991 stressed the fact that two germs were most often the cause of exacerbation in chronic bronchitis (Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae) and that antibiotic therapy was the "safe solution" and that the first intention treatment should be either penicillin A, a first generation cephalosporin or a macrolide for the first 8-10 days. A chest x-ray was recommended if there was the slightest doubt about co-existing parenchymal disease with a reevaluation around the 7th day and a pre
