Sugar-sweetened beverages in India: Price elasticity, affordability, and taxation.

Rising consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in India is a significant public health challenge, contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). SSB-attributable deaths exceed 10,000 annually. The associated economic burden is projected to reach 2.47% of India's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2060. This study evaluates the impact of taxation as a policy instrument to reduce SSB consumption in India. Data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 2022-23 household survey and Euromonitor retail sales data were used. SSB affordability was measured

Sustainable mobility in auto-dominated Metro Boston: Challenges and opportunities post-COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted society as we knew it in a variety of ways, with especially severe impacts on low-income households. Even before COVID-19, Metro Boston was witnessing a rise in private car ownership and decreasing mass transit ridership, further exacerbated by a historical spatial mismatch that made low-income commuters relatively more dependent on mass transit. Accounts of overcrowded buses and trains since early March have heightened psychological dread among regular transit commuters, some of whom have already purchased a private car or intend to do so within the next ye

The impact of delayed retirement on the financial sustainability of China's urban employee pension insurance fund.

Against the backdrop of accelerating population aging and mounting concerns over the financial viability of public pension systems, this paper develops an actuarial simulation framework that integrates demographic dynamics, fund revenue and expenditure rules, and the central adjustment mechanism. We evaluate four scenarios: baseline, delayed retirement only, national pooling only, and the combined reform. Our findings indicate that in the absence of policy intervention, regional disparities in fund balances intensify markedly: the western region enters cumulative deficit first, followed by the

Nationwide patterns of cataract surgery in Japan: facility-level volume and outpatient versus inpatient procedures using the National Database of Health Insurance Claims (NDB).

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery is among the most commonly performed types of surgery in Japan, but the actual surgical volume at the healthcare facility level remains unclear. This is partly because a substantial number of cataract surgical procedures are performed in clinics, making comprehensive investigation of relevant data difficult. This study used the National Database of Health Insurance Claims (NDB) to elucidate the number of surgical procedures, including outpatient procedures, performed at the facility level. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. METHODS: Using NDB data, we

Commercial interests in health policy dialogues: a qualitative content analysis of NEDLAC's engagement with South Africa's Health Promotion Levy.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising rapidly in South Africa, prompting the introduction of the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) in 2018 to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. However, the levy remains below the rate recommended by the World Health Organization. One of the central institutions involved in the policy process leading up to and following the introduction of the HPL was the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC), a statutory body designed to promote dialogue between government, business, labour, and community constituencies. Understanding the use of media analysis in public health research through food tax debates (HEALTHEI Project): a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Poor diet is a major public health concern. In 2021, 63·8% of adults and 22·2% of reception-age children were either overweight or obese in England. Fiscal interventions have become a popular policy measure to reduce obesity and encourage healthy eating. Such measures are highly controversial, leading to media debate promoting pro-tax and anti-tax arguments. To better understand food tax debates and the use of media analysis in public health research, we conducted a scoping review of media analyses using food taxes as a case study. METHODS: In this scoping review, we searched SCOP

The Scylla State. A gendered understanding of the experiences of marginalised women in the United Kingdom.

Since the formation of the 2012 Coalition government, the UK has been subject to 12 years of neoliberal policy enacted with ferocity and vigour. This has comprised austerity measures including the retrenchment of welfare via the reshaping of the welfare state and public services according to business practices, ideals of individual responsibilisation and overwhelmingly, the notion of reducing the state's ideological and fiscal responsibility for equity and social welfare. The neoliberal state has been conceptualised by Loic Wacquant as a Centaur, boasting a liberal head, yet one atop an author

Influences of relative deprivation on health inequality of rural residents in China: A moderated mediation model.

Analyzing the relationship between individual relative deprivation and rural residents' health inequality is a deepening of the research on the social impact of individual relative deprivation. On the theoretical basis of the absolute and relative income hypothesis, using the data of China Family Panel Studies in 2018, taking other residents in the village as the reference group, this paper selects the relative income deprivation and absolute income to comprehensively quantify the generalized impact of farmers' income gap, introduces the psychological capital guidance mechanism, and constructs

The twenty-year war over England's National Health Service: a report from the battlefield.

This article analyzes the latest battle in the twenty-year war to change England's National Health Service (NHS), starting with the internal market reforms introduced by the Thatcher government and now carried one step farther by David Cameron's coalition government. The government's program of change is characterized by (1) its wide scope and the organizational upheavals involved and (2) the fact that it is being introduced at a time when the NHS faces unprecedented fiscal pressures. The legislation faced strong political, public, and professional hostility both from those who saw it as a cri

Geographical variations in the correlates of blood donor turnout rates: an investigation of Canadian metropolitan areas.

BACKGROUND: Like other countries, Canada's population is aging, and the implications of this demographic change need to be better understood from the perspective of blood supply. Analysis of donor data will help to identify systematic patterns of donation and its correlates. DATA: Geo-coded blood donor and donor clinic data are provided by Canadian Blood Services. Blood donor data is provided for the fiscal year 2006-2007 indicating the total number of donors for each Canadian postal code, excluding the province of Québec. Potential correlates of blood donation are selected based on social an

'The Opportunity to Catch Up': From Emergency Response to Immunization Sustainability in Cameroon.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted routine immunization globally and across Cameroon, causing a surge in 'zero-dose' (ZD) children and exacerbating 'missed opportunities for vaccination' (MOV). This necessitated accelerated recovery initiatives like the Big Catch-Up (BCU). This study explores BCU's operationalization, implementation and sustainability in Cameroon, assessing how vertical funding interacted with national health systems to reach ZD and under immunized (UI) children. Focusing on four districts (urban, conflict-affected, isolated island, and remote rural), we triangulated dat

Reimagining public-private partnerships for primary health care in Africa: a governance and systems analysis of emerging models in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) systems across many low- and middle-income countries increasingly rely on mixed provider environments involving public, private, and mission-based actors. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are often promoted as a way of improving coordination and expanding access to care. However, many PHC partnerships continue to be governed through highly centralized and compliance-oriented arrangements that may limit flexibility, trust, and long-term collaboration. Botswana provides a useful case for examining how PPPs are governed within a health system experiencing f

Leveraging COVID-19 to modernise depression care for VA primary care populations: protocol for a sequential explanatory mixed method evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The Veterans Health Administration (VA) integrated mental and physical health services to better detect and treat depression. Primary care nurses conduct screening annually. Clinicians, including Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) specialists, follow-up as needed for treatment. Depression detection and management processes are complex, involve multilevel stakeholders, and are subject to significant disruption from COVID-19 and from the resulting expansion of telehealth, aiming to preserve care access. This study aimed to examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic worsened de

Impact of the "39-week rule" on adverse pregnancy outcomes: a statewide analysis.

BACKGROUND: The "39-week rule," adopted by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists circa 2009, discouraged routine elective induction of labor in early-term gestations (37 weeks 0 days-38 weeks 6 days) to decrease the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. However, little research exists regarding any unintended adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with this policy shift. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the difference in incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes before and after the implementation of the 39-week rule. STUDY DESIGN: Deidentified data from all births in the

Utilization of radiotherapy and hypofractionated radiotherapy in Japan: long-term trends and the influence of COVID-19 pandemic.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a short-term decline in radiotherapy use was reported. In this study, we investigated long-term changes in the use of radiotherapy and hypofractionated radiotherapy before and after the COVID-19 pandemic period in Japan and assessed whether the pandemic influenced the adoption of hypofractionation. We obtained data for analysis from the National Database Open Data for fiscal years (FYs) 2014 to 2023. For the 5 years from FY2019 to FY2023, with detailed monthly data available, we used interrupted time series (ITS) analysis to examine chan

Evidence of the adverse effects of air pollution on the population's health in Spain: analysis of the economic costs of premature deaths.

Exposure to ambient air pollution increases mortality and morbidity, leading disabilities, and premature deaths. Air pollution has been identified as a leading cause of global disease burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries in 2015 (Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study, 2015). This study explores the relation between mortality rates and particulate matter (PM) concentrations in the 50 Spanish regions for the period 2002-2017. Moreover, we estimated the premature deaths due to PM in Spain according to welfare and production losses in 2017. Random-effects mod

How do policymakers interpret and implement the principle of equivalence with regard to prison health? A qualitative study among key policymakers in England.

BACKGROUND: The principle of equivalence in prison health has been established for nearly four decades. It seeks to ensure that prisoners have access to the same level of healthcare as members of society at large, which is entrenched within the international legal framework and England's national health policies. AIMS: This study examined how key policymakers interpret and implement the principle of equivalence in English prisons. It also identified opportunities and threats associated with the application of the principle. METHODS: In total, 30 policymakers took part in this research. These
