Gross morphology and evolution of the mechanoreceptive lateral-line system in teleost fishes.

The morphology and development of the mechanoreceptive lateral-line system in teleost fishes is reviewed, and the systematic distribution of defined types of lateral-line systems is summarized. The importance of an understanding of ontogeny is stressed and the roles of phylogenetic and developmental constraints in the evolution of the lateral-line system are discussed. Four types of head canal systems are identified on the basis of the relative development of the canals and the orientation of the neuromast receptors contained within them. The distribution of these patterns in the four major te

Marking of olfactory axons of fishes by intravital staining with Procion brilliant yellow.

Olfactory axons of fishes can be traced after vital staining of the olfactory surface with the fluorescent dye Procion brilliant yellow M 4-RAN. Following selective accumulation by the receptor dendrites and perikarya the dye migrates intra-axonally over distances of more than 200 micrometer. Fluorescence microscope observation of formaldehyde fixed and paraffin sectioned preparations of the olfactory organ demonstrate clearly the system of intraepithelial axons and their first order bundles running toward the olfactory nerve.

Ecology drives the degree of convergence in the gene expression of extremophile fishes.

Convergent evolution is common and a testament to the repeatability of evolution. Still, non-convergence is also widespread, and a major question is whether idiosyncratic, lineage-specific changes are reflective of chance events inherent to evolutionary processes, or whether they are influenced by deterministic genetic or ecological factors. To address this question, we quantified the degree of convergence in gene expression across lineages of livebearing fishes (Poeciliidae) that span 40 million years of divergence and have colonized toxic, hydrogen-sulfide-rich springs. We asked whether the

Pain in laboratory fishes: What we know and what we need to know.

The scientific exploration of the capacity of fishes to experience pain has grown since the first identification of nociceptors in rainbow trout in 2002. In the early years up to 2010 anatomical and electrophysiological evidence was gathered that demonstrated that the characteristics of peripheral and central nervous system responses were comparable to mammals. Combined with behavioural investigations where fishes exhibited anomalous responses to painful treatment that were ameliorated by pain-relieving drugs subsequent studies were fuelled by this convincing evidence. More contemporary studie

Convergent latitudinal erosion of circadian systems in a rapidly diversifying order of fishes.

Biological clocks allow organisms to anticipate cyclical environmental changes, yet in high-latitude or deep-sea habitats, the diel cues that entrain these rhythms are often seasonally diminished or absent. Fishes of the order Perciformes have rapidly diversified across these arrhythmic ecosystems, raising the question of whether changes to circadian rhythms and biological clock genetic architecture are a component of their evolutionary success. Here, we used a comparative genomic approach to investigate patterns of core biological clock gene loss across 96 perciform and five outgroup species.

Dissemination of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium between humans and fishes.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a major public health concern, yet little is known about their circulation in fish. This study investigated the occurrence, glycopeptide resistance genotypes, virulence characteristics, and sequence types (STs) of VRE isolated from diseased fishes and humans. Isolates were identified using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. VRE isolates were screened for the presence of glycopeptide resistance genes

Single cones give rise to multi-cone types in the retinas of fishes.

Retinal cone photoreceptors are specialized neurons that capture light to begin the process of daylight vision. They occur as individual cells (i.e., single cones), or as combinations of structurally linked cells, such as the double and triple cones found in the retinas of non-eutherian vertebrates. These different morphological cone types form mosaics of varying regularity, with single and double cones patterned as nearly perfect lattices in the retinas of many bony fishes (teleosts) and some geckos. Although double cones were first reported over 150 years ago, how they form (i.e., whether fr

Interlaboratory comparison study of PCBs congeners in coregonid fishes from an Arctic river.

Identification of emerging contaminants in fish species consumed by indigenous peoples remains an important task in the Arctic from the perspective of preserving human chemical safety. This study presents an interlaboratory comparison of the analysis results of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners in coregonid fishes, using the Norilo-Pyasinskaya water system on the Taimyr Peninsula as an example, where a large enterprise is located. Two laboratories conducted analyses to quantify PCB levels in the muscle tissue of fish caught at various distances from the suspected contamination source. T

Middle Eocene cartilaginous fishes (Vertebrata: Chondrichthyes) of the Dnieper-Donets Basin, northern Ukraine.

Marine basins that existed in present-day Ukraine during the Eocene harboured various groups of cartilaginous and bony fishes, reptiles, aquatic birds, and marine mammals. Fish remains from Paleogene deposits of Kyiv and its vicinities were first collected and described by O.S. Rogovich in the mid-19th century. Here we have carried out a re-examination of chondrichthyan fossils from Rogovich's collection and evaluated several later records, all of which were recovered from middle Eocene deposits. In total, 88 specimens represented by teeth, vertebrae, and other skeletal elements were analysed

Total mercury in commercial fishes and estimation of Brazilian dietary exposure to methylmercury.

BACKGROUND: Mercury, in particular its most toxic form methylmercury, poses a risk to public health. Dietary methylmercury exposure is mainly by fish, and it can vary with fish contamination and by dietary habits of the population. This study aimed to quantify total mercury levels in different fish from Brazil and to estimate Brazilian exposure to methylmercury by fish consumption. METHODS: Total mercury occurrence was investigated in 18 different fish species by atomic absorption spectrometry with thermal decomposition and gold amalgamation. Dietary exposure to methylmercury was estimated by

Mechanisms of anguilliform locomotion in fishes studied using simple three-dimensional physical models.

Physical models enable researchers to systematically examine complex and dynamic mechanisms of underwater locomotion in ways that would be challenging with freely swimming animals. Previous research on undulatory locomotion, for example, has used rectangular flexible panels that are effectively two-dimensional as proxies for the propulsive surfaces of swimming fishes, but these bear little resemblance to the bodies of elongate eel-like swimming animals. In this paper we use a polyurethane rod (round cross-section) and bar (square cross-section) to represent the body of a swimming Pacific hagfi

A new species of Ergasilus (Copepoda:Cyclopoida:Ergasilidae) from coastal fishes of the Mexican Pacific.

A new species of the cyclopoid copepod genus Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1832 is described based on adult female specimens removed from the gills of the yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters) and the yellowfin snook Centropomus robalito Jordan et Gilbert from a Pacific coastal system of Mexico. The new species Ergasilus davidi sp. n. has a combination of characters that includes a two-segmented first leg endopod, a three-segmented fourth leg endopod, and the presence of a single seta on the first antennular segment. These characters are shared with 14 other congeners known mainly from Bra

Temporal changes in the prevalence of parasites in two Oregon estuary-dwelling fishes.

The parasite faunas of juvenile English sole (Parophrys vetulus) in 1971-1972 and staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus) in 1971 from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were compared with faunas found in the same estuary in 1997-2000 (English sole) and 1999-2000 (staghorn sculpin). The 7 most commonly occurring parasites in 1971 were compared with the same species observed during the same month and sampling sites in 1997-2000. Multivariate community analysis of juvenile English sole parasites supported the suggestion that the 1971 parasite data were representative of the early-1970s time period. Four of the

Do fishes have nociceptors? Evidence for the evolution of a vertebrate sensory system.

Nociception is the detection of a noxious tissue-damaging stimulus and is sometimes accompanied by a reflex response such as withdrawal. Pain perception, as distinct from nociception, has been demonstrated in birds and mammals but has not been systematically studied in lower vertebrates. We assessed whether a fish possessed cutaneous nociceptors capable of detecting noxious stimuli and whether its behaviour was sufficiently adversely affected by the administration of a noxious stimulus. Electrophysiological recordings from trigeminal nerves identified polymodal nociceptors on the head of the t

[Allergy to shrimp. A contribution to reactions after ingestion of seafood and fishes].

Adverse reactions to seafood are common and may cause many types of symptoms that are difficult to define. The nature of these reactions are variable including allergic and toxic reactions as well as infectious diseases. The differentiation between these entities is essential in choosing therapy. We describe 9 patients with IgE mediated allergic reactions due to crustaceans and fish diagnosed from case history, clinical findings, skin tests and specific IgE antibodies. Most symptoms of a IgE mediated allergic reaction appear within 30 minutes after ingestion. Characteristics clinical features

Prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes and other Listeria species in fish, fish products and fish processing environment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Fish and seafood products are one of the most common causes of listeriosis in humans. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using scientific literature to summarize available data on the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria sp. in fish, fish products and fish processing environment. Meta-analysis models were used to estimate the mean prevalence of the pathogen and to compare prevalence among the most popular fishes. Data from a total of 14,496 samples were analysed. Pooled prevalence of L. monocytogenes and Listeria sp. in raw fish was 5.8 % (95 % CI: 4.7-6.9) and 1

Conscious vision in fish.

We challenge Fleming and Michel's arguments that aquatic animals do not have conscious vision. Focusing on fish, we suggest - on the basis of what we know about their cognition and evolution - that most fish are likely to have conscious vision, which evolved well before the transition to a largely terrestrial habitat. We end by clarifying the difference between our model-based, learning-driven view of the evolution of animal consciousness and Fleming and Michel's view.
