Mouthrot infections (bacterial stomatitis) have a significant impact on the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in Western Canada due to economic losses and fish welfare. Bacteria isolated from lesions in the field have been identified as Tenacibaculum maritimum. Mouthrot is different to classical tenacibaculosis, which is most commonly associated with ulcerative lesions, frayed fins and tail rot. The marine fish pathogen T. maritimum is found worldwide; however, in Western Canada, the knowledge of the genetic profile of T. maritimum is limited. This study looked at increasing this knowledge

Using 16S rRNA and rpoB gene sequencing, we identified 6 patients infected with Elizabethkingia bruuniana treated at E-Da Hospital (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) during 2005-2017. We describe patient characteristics and the molecular characteristics of the E. bruuniana isolates, including their MICs. Larger-scale studies are needed for more robust characterization of this pathogen.

In a hospital-acquired infection with multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene analysis identified the pathogen as Elizabethkingia miricola. Whole-genome sequencing, genus-level core genome analysis, and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization of 35 Elizabethkingia strains indicated that the species taxonomy should be further explored.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a recognised cause of meningitis in premature neonates and severe infections in immunocompromised adults; multi-drug resistance is a major issue. A premature infant developed sepsis, meningitis and hydrocephalus owing to E. meningoseptica and was treated successfully with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) for 3 weeks. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt was required for hydrocephalus. This is the youngest patient with meningitis caused by E. meningoseptica to have responded to TMP-SMZ.

In March 2024, a severe mass mortality event occurred at a grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) farm in Zhejiang, China, resulting in a cumulative mortality rate of 70%. To identify the causative agent, 12 bacterial isolates that exhibited the same phenotypic characteristics were isolated from diseased fish. A further phylogenetic (16S rDNA) characterization identified the bacterium as Flavobacterium psychrophilum. Genetic characterization revealed that all 12 bacterial isolates belonged to serotype Type-1 and sequence type ST418, a newly documented ST closely associated with cyprinid fish hos

Flavobacterium oreochromis (Fo) poses a significant threat to tilapia, leading to economic losses due to mortality. Immersion vaccines, while practical for small fish, often result in limited antigen absorption. This study aimed to develop a cationic lipid-based nanoparticle vaccine using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and evaluate its efficacy against F. oreochromis in red tilapia. In the first trial, healthy red tilapia were immersion vaccinated for 30 min, with three groups included in the trial: control (non-vaccinated), formalin-killed sonicated cells (FK-SC), or cationic lipid-bas

BACKGROUND: The male mosquito microbiome may be important for identifying ideal candidates for disease control. Among other criteria, mosquito-associated symbionts that have high localization in both male and female mosquitoes and are transmissible through both vertical and sexual routes are desirable. However, mosquito microbiome studies have mainly been female-focused. In this study, the microbiota of male and female Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) were compared to identify shared or unique bacteria.
METHODS: Late larval instars of Anopheles mosquitoes were collected from the field and

Elizabethkingia anophelis is a human pathogen responsible for severe nosocomial infections in neonates and immunocompromised patients. The significantly higher mortality rate from E. anophelis infections and the lack of available regimens highlight the critical need to explore novel drug targets. The current study investigated effective novel drug targets by employing a comprehensive in silico subtractive genomic approach integrated with pangenomic analysis of E. anophelis strains. A total of 2809 core genomic proteins were found by pangenomic analysis of non-paralogous proteins. Subsequently,

Interactions between photoautotrophs and heterotrophs are central to marine microbial ecosystems. Synechococcus are dominant marine phototrophs, and they are frequently associated with heterotrophic bacteria. These co-cultures provide a useful research system to investigate photoautotroph-heterotroph interactions in marine systems. Bacteria within the Roseobacter clade and Flavobacteria are two of the main bacterial lineages that exhibit intimate associations with Synechococcus populations. We conducted metagenomic analyses of a Synechococcus culture, followed by genomic binning of metagenomic

N-Acetylglucosamine exists in various glycoforms and linkage patterns within organisms, playing a crucial role in numerous vital biological processes. The signal of β-1,2-N-acetylglucosamine is a key component within complex biantennary N-glycans on the cell surface, leaving related research in its early exploratory stages. Currently, there is a lack of efficient tools and methods capable of directly modifying terminal N-acetylglucosamine on living cells. In this study, we identified a novel β-N-acetylglucosaminidase from Elizabethkingia meningoseptica FMS-007, which specifically cleaves nonre

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a pathogenic bacterium affecting Chilean salmonid farms. High antigenic and genetic diversity exists among Chilean F. psychrophilum isolates, but the distribution thereof among farms is poorly understood. These epidemiological data are key for developing isolate-specific vaccines. The present study isolated F. psychrophilum in diseased Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from five freshwater farms between 2018 and 2019. Each farm only raised one salmonid species and was geographically separated from and did not share culturing w

Infections due to Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, a Gram-negative oxidative bacterium are frequently founded in neonatal and immunocompromised individuals. The notable characteristic of this organism is its multi-drug resistance to common antibiotics used for infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. We report a rare case of complicated pericardial effusion due to E. meningoseptica in a 2-year-old boy, who was admitted with chief complaints of fever and tachypnea (mentioned by his parents) and suffered from a rare lung malignancy (lymphangioleiomyomatosis). He was successfully treated with

The Gram-negative bacterium Flavobacterium columnare is the cause of columnaris disease, which can occur in channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ). In a previous study, the betaine-type alkaloid ungeremine, 1, obtained from Pancratium maritimum L. was found to have strong antibacterial activity against F. columnare. In this study, analogues of 1 were evaluated using a rapid bioassay for activity against F. columnare to determine if the analogues might provide greater antibacterial activity and to determine structure-activity relationships of the test compounds. Several ungeremine analogues we

Although shifts in bacterial communities during harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been studied extensively, the assembly processes of bacterioplankton communities across complete bloom cycles remain insufficiently resolved. In this study, based on 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, we characterized the succession and assembly of bacterioplankton communities across four stages of a coastal bloom caused by Scrippsiella acuminata. We found that the alpha diversity of free-living (FL) bacterioplankton decreased with bloom progression, whereas the alpha diversity of particle-attached (PA) bac

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used to lessen symptoms in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, the effects of PPI therapy on the gastrointestinal microbiota in GERD patients remain unclear. We examined the association between the PPI usage and the microbiota present in gastric mucosal and fecal samples from GERD patients and healthy controls (HCs) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. GERD patients taking PPIs were further divided into short-term and long-term PPI user groups. We showed that PPI administration lowered the relative bacterial diversity of the gast

Flavobacterial diseases, caused by multiple members of the Family Flavobacteriaceae, elicit serious losses in wild and farmed fish around the world. Flavobacteria are known to be transmitted horizontally; however, vertical transmission has been suspected but proven only for one fish-pathogenic flavobacterial species (e.g., Flavobacterium psychrophilum). Herein, we report on the isolation and molecular identification of multiple Flavobacterium and Chryseobacterium taxa from the ovarian fluid and eggs of feral Great Lakes Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Identified egg- and ovarian flu

BACKGROUND: Crustose coralline algae (CCA) enhance coral recruitment, but the response of coral larval settlement to CCA varies between CCA species. Furthermore, it is unclear whether coral larvae respond to settlement cues from the algal host itself or its associated microorganisms. To determine whether CCA-derived settlement cues have a microbial origin, we interrogated the microbiome of 14 coralline algal species and a calcareous non-coralline alga eliciting varying levels of settlement across 14 coral species from a wide diversity of families found in the Great Barrier Reef.
RESULTS: Line

Salmon aquaculture is continually threatened by sea lice infestations, which impact fish health, welfare, and productivity. Thus, breeding programs enable the selection of phenotypes to improve productive performance. This study uses a controlled, repeated lice infestation model to analyze the skin transcriptome and microbiome of Atlantic salmon concerning their resistance or susceptibility to sea lice infestation. The transcriptomic profile of skin from three phenotypes-resistant (R), susceptible (S), and one salmon family presumably associated with acquired resistance to sea lice (ALR)-was a
