Permanent grounding of a USAF pilot following photorefractive keratectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) has been extensively studied in the literature and its potential application in aircrew has not gone unnoticed. Complication rates following corneal refractive surgery (CRS), including PRK and laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), remain low, with most patients achieving improved uncorrected visual acuity and reduced spectacle dependence. Overall, predictability, low complication rates, high rate of success, stability, and safety have all been cited as instrumental in the adoption of PRK in aviators. Consequently, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) approv

Nano-engineered mesenchymal stem cells as a platform for targeted and biologically regulated drug delivery in ocular surface inflammation.

Transplantation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) has demonstrated safety and efficacy in the treatment of the inflamed and damaged ocular surface in patients with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). However, this strategy alone is often insufficient to fully resolve clinical signs such as corneal opacity, neovascularization, ulceration, chronic inflammation, vision loss, and pain. The aim of this work was to nano-engineer hMSCs with fluorometholone-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (FML-NLCs) to develop a combined cell-based drug delivery strategy capable of achieving sustained drug

Venom ophthalmia (keratoconjunctivitis) caused by nuchal gland secretion of Rhabdophis tigrinus: case report.

Rhabdophis tigrinus (R. tigrinus) is a common colubrid snake that possesses a series of paired sac-like nuchal glands behind the head. When pressure is applied to the nuchal area, the thin skin over the nuchal glands can rupture and release secretions. In Japan, 19 cases of ophthalmia caused by the nuchal gland secretion of R. tigrinus have been reported. However, only one case has been documented in an English report. A 72-year old woman was sprayed by the nuchal gland fluid of R. tigrinus in her right eye. She presented with symptoms of eye pain and blurred vision. A slit-lamp examination re
