Folic Acid Deficiency Enhances the Tyr705 and Ser727 Phosphorylation of Mitochondrial STAT3 in In Vivo and In Vitro Models of Ischemic Stroke.

Ischemic stroke remains one of the most common causes of death and disability worldwide. The stroke patients with an inadequate intake of folic acid tend to have increased brain injury and poorer prognosis. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the harmful effects of folic acid deficiency (FD) in ischemic stroke is still elusive. Here, we aimed to test the hypothesis that mitochondrial localized STAT3 (mitoSTAT3) expression may be involved in the process of neuronal damage induced by FD in in vivo and in vitro models of ischemic stroke. Our results exhibited that FD increased infarct size

Gestational folic acid supplement prevents vitamin D deficiency-induced depression-like behavior by reversing cortical DNA hypomethylation in adult offspring.

Depression is a common mental disorder with an increasing incidence. Several studies have demonstrated that cortical DNA hypomethylation is associated with depression-like behaviors. This study aims to investigate whether maternal vitamin D deficiency (VDD) induces depression-like behaviors and to explore the effects of folic acid supplement on VDD-induced cortical DNA hypomethylation in adult offspring. Female mice were fed with a VDD diet, beginning at 5 weeks of age and throughout pregnancy. Depression-like behaviors were evaluated, and cortical 5-methylcytosine (5mC) content was detected i

Parental folic acid deficiency delays neurobehavioral development in rat offspring by inhibiting the differentiation of neural stem cells into neurons.

Maternal folate status during pregnancy is associated with the neurodevelopment of offspring; however, study results on the association between paternal folate status and offspring neurodevelopment are inconsistent. This study aimed to explore whether parental folic acid deficiency affects the neurobehavioral development of offspring by affecting the differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) into neurons. In the present study, the offspring were divided into four groups: parental folic acid deficient group (D-D), maternal folic acid deficient and paternal folic acid normal group (D-N), mater

Intergenerational impact of paternal lifetime exposures to both folic acid deficiency and supplementation on reproductive outcomes and imprinted gene methylation.

STUDY QUESTION: Do paternal exposures to folic acid deficient (FD), and/or folic acid supplemented (FS) diets, throughout germ cell development adversely affect male germ cells and consequently offspring health outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER: Male mice exposed over their lifetimes to both FD and FS diets showed decreased sperm counts and altered imprinted gene methylation with evidence of transmission of adverse effects to the offspring, including increased postnatal-preweaning mortality and variability in imprinted gene methylation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is increasing evidence that disrupt

[Atrophy of the oro-pharyngeal mucosa caused by vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency. Etiopathologic aspects and clinico-therapeutic problems].

BACKGROUND: By atrophy, the decrease in volume of the cell due to loss of cell substances is intended. When a sufficiently high number of cells is involved, the whole tissue or organ decreases in volume or becomes atrophic. The oropharyngeal mucous membrane can be the site of processes of mainly atrophic type whose causes can be found in various pathologies. These pathologies can be caused by alterations in the endocrin-metabolic conditions, such as vitamin deficiencies, especially of vitamin B12 and folic acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients who on objective examination were af

Maternal folic acid deficiency stimulates neural cell apoptosis via miR-34a associated with Bcl-2 in the rat foetal brain.

Embryonic development is a critical period wherein brain neurons are generated and organized. Maternal dietary folate, a cofactor in one-carbon metabolism, modulates neurogenesis and apoptosis in foetal brain neurons. We hypothesized that aberrant neuronal apoptosis may affect the development of the central nervous system during maternal folic acid deficiency, with evident effects because maternal folic acid deficiency modulates the microRNA-34a associated with Bcl-2 pathway during embryonic development. Four-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into two groups (10 rats pe

Exploring the Impact of Folic Acid Supplementation and Vitamin B12 Deficiency on Maternal and Fetal Outcomes in Pregnant Women with Celiac Disease.

Background: Celiac disease is a chronic small intestinal immune-mediated enteropathy precipitated by exposure to dietary gluten, affecting approximately 1% of the global population and two million Americans. An increasing number of studies have identified a link between celiac disease and adverse maternal and fetal outcomes during pregnancy and after birth. Additionally, both celiac disease and pregnancy are associated with an increased risk for nutrient deficiencies, specifically vitamin B12 and folate. Methods: This review examines the current literature related to the folate trap and vitami

The effects of feeding rats diets deficient in folic acid and related methyl donors on the blood pressure and glucose tolerance of the offspring.

In humans poor maternal folate status is associated with a decrease in infant birth weight. As low birth weight increases the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease in adults, an inadequate supply of folic acid in the mother's diet may increase the susceptibility of the offspring to disease. We have fed laboratory rats diets deficient in folic acid and the related methyl donors methionine and choline to examine the effects on growth, blood pressure and insulin action in the offspring. Poor folate status transiently increased fetal growth but did not produce a long-term change in body wei

Evaluating Treatment Outcomes of Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid Supplementation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Patients With Deficiencies: A Comparative Analysis.

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) imposes a considerable impact on day-to-day functioning. Many people experience insufficient symptom relief even after taking the optimum dose of OCD medications. Reduced levels of folic acid and vitamin B₁₂, along with elevated homocysteine (HCY), have been suggested as possible factors in the persistence of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. This study investigated how supplementation of vitamin B₁₂, folic acid, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) affects OC symptoms and related biochemical markers. Methods A comparative study

[An adult case of homocystinuria probably due to methylenetetrahydrofolate-reductase deficiency--treatment with folic acid and the course of coagulation-fibrinolysis parameters].

We report a rare male case of homocystinuria probably due to methylenetetrahydrofolate-reductase deficiency. The onset of his disorder was at 19 years of age, and he had no family history. He initially developed gait disturbance, and then generalized seizure in several months, which made him admitted to our hospital. Neurological examinations revealed mental dysfunction, spastic paraplegia, cerebellar ataxia, and sensory disturbance in his feet. MRI showed multiple increased intensities on T2-weighted images in the cerebral white matter. EMG revealed neurogenic changes. These symptoms and sign
