Incidence of Herpesvirus hominis antibodies among blood donor populations.

The microneutralization test was used to determine the occurrence of antibodies to Herpesvirus hominis Type 1 and Type 2 in sera from patients attending the Special Clinic, Bristol Royal Infirmary, with proven herpes genitalis, and in sera taken from blood donors in Bath, Dursley, and Bristol, as well as from donors in three different prison populations. The findings in patients with herpes genitalis indicate that the test accurately reflects the antibody response expected in relation to the type of herpes virus isolated from the lesions. The incidence of Type 2 antibodies among the blood dono

Viability of hospital pathogens on mobile phone.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical use of mobile phones have increased exponentially. Whilst evidence of contamination is documented, a key factor when determining potential risks of contamination, is establishing the duration the organism remains viable on the device. If pathogens are found to persist for extended duration, healthcare mobile phones may become fomites for cross departmental transmission. AIM: Determine the duration pathogenic bacteria, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, two Pseudomonas sp. Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis susceptible and resistant to vancomycin (VSE and VRE

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in cell phones of health care workers from Peruvian pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) use their mobile phones during working hours or medical care. There is evidence that the instruments are colonized with pathogenic microorganisms. Here, we describe levels of Enterobacteriaceae contamination (EC) in cell phones and the risk factors associated with EC in Peruvian intensive care units (ICUs). METHODS: This was a 5-month cohort study among 114 HCWs of 3 pediatric and 2 neonatology ICUs from 3 Peruvian hospitals. A baseline survey collected data on risk factors associated with EC. Swabs were collected from HCWs' phones every other week. RES

How long do nosocomial pathogens persist on inanimate surfaces? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Inanimate surfaces have often been described as the source for outbreaks of nosocomial infections. The aim of this review is to summarize data on the persistence of different nosocomial pathogens on inanimate surfaces. METHODS: The literature was systematically reviewed in MedLine without language restrictions. In addition, cited articles in a report were assessed and standard textbooks on the topic were reviewed. All reports with experimental evidence on the duration of persistence of a nosocomial pathogen on any type of surface were included. RESULTS: Most gram-positive bacteri

Bacterial alteration of redox stressors impacts environmental stability of influenza A virus.

Influenza A virus (IAV) causes annual morbidity and mortality and remains a constant pandemic threat due to the emergence of novel strains. Therefore, understanding the factors important in host-to-host transmission of IAV is a key control point for protecting individual and public health. Transmission is highly heterogeneous with viral factors and host inflammatory and immune factors being implicated. Also implicated is the upper respiratory microbiome. While typically thought to act indirectly on viral pathogenesis, in an immunomodulatory capacity to enhance or reduce susceptibility to viral

Basics concepts about asepsis and antiseptics.

During health care, the patient is exposed to a wide variety of microorganisms. Maximum hygiene in all care activities is therefore essential in order to reduce the cross-transmission of preventable infectious diseases. The 3 key mechanisms for the prevention of infection in health centers are cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. The scientific and rational use of disinfectants and antiseptics, and the correct application of aseptic techniques in the care of patients and in the handling and supply of materials are the fundamental considerations for the prevention of healthcare related inf

An HIV-1 transmission case possibly associated with manicure care.

A recently diagnosed 22-year-old female with no history of transmission risk factors prompted a thorough investigation of possible alternative risk factors. As the patient had evidence of advanced disease and laboratory data compatible with long-standing infection, past events were reviewed. About 10 years ago the patient shared manicure utensils with an older cousin, later known to be HIV infected; this prompted the phylogenetic analysis of the HIV sequences of both patients. Phylogenetic analyses of partial HIV-1 polymerase and envelope sequences from both patients revealed highly related se

Outbreak: 10 tips to make scabies scamper.

PROBLEM: Most nursing homes are aware of the pandemonium an outbreak of scabies can cause-the laundry alone occupies staff for days. Debilitated residents and those who have poor selfcare skills require considerable help with the activities associated with the eradication of Sarcoptes scabiei. How can a consultant pharmacist help? SOLUTION: Consultant pharmacists should cultivate a "high index of suspicion" for scabies. Scabies mites live their entire lives on the human host as obligate parasites. They are able to survive elsewhere for only up to 48 hours, making transmission via fomite (blan

Human Pathogenic Paecilomyces from Food.

Paecilomyces spp. and Byssochlamys spp. are heat-resistant fungi important to industry because they can cause food and beverage spoilage, incurring economic loss. The consequences of food or beverage fungal colonization is the loss of nutritional value, structure and taste, and the possibility of producing toxic secondary metabolites that may result in medical problems. Furthermore, these fungi can infect animals and humans and it is unknown if contaminated foods may be fomites. P. variotii is the principal agent of food spoilage or contamination and it is most frequently associated with human

Contagious equine metritis: artificial reproduction changes the epidemiologic paradigm.

Recent CEM outbreak reports reflect a novel epidemiologic manifestation with a markedly different risk association for transmission via artificial reproduction and subsequent to inadvertent importation of unapparent carrier stallions. Artificial breeding has an increased association with horizontal or fomite-associated transmission. Reported risk factors include inadequate biosecurity protocols at centralised breeding facilities associated with stallion management and methods of semen collection, processing and transport. Detection of carriers is based on traditional bacteriology from genital

What's eating you? Pediculus humanus (head louse and body louse).

Head lice remain a common problem worldwide. As resistance to available therapeutic agents can emerge rapidly, there is a need for continued research to find new and better agents. Until better agents are available, clinicians may find that rotational therapy, using different agents, may help to slow the emergence of resistance. Physical modalities, such as mechanical nit and louse removal and occlusive agents to asphyxiate the lice, should not be ignored, especially in light of our limited therapeutic armamentarium. All therapeutic agents are doomed to failure if infestation is allowed to rec

Human cryptosporidiosis associated with an epizootic in calves.

An outbreak of human cryptosporidiosis occurred among previously healthy persons in a veterinary medical teaching hospital. Human illness began after admission of calves from a farm which had been experiencing an epizootic of neonatal diarrhea due to Cryptosporidium. The clinical syndrome in humans was characterized by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, flatulence, and headache. Cryptosporidiosis was confirmed by zinc sulfate flotation of fecal specimens in four persons, three of whom had been responsible for the care and treatment of infected calves. A fourth patient had washed her husband'

Congenital toxoplasmosis: epidemiologic features and control.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is acquired from undercooked meat or from food or fomites contaminated by cat feces. The disease can be transmitted to the fetus only during maternal parasitemia, which is associated with primary infection. Extrapolation from current data suggests that there are 140 to 1400 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis per year in Canada and that 70 to 280 of the infants are severely affected at birth; many of the others suffer sequelae later in life. Serologic diagnosis of primary infection in the mother is quite sensitive and specific. Diagno

A proposal to reduce the risk of transmission of human papilloma virus via transvaginal ultrasound.

Three steps must be followed to prevent the transmission of infection via a contaminated transvaginal ultrasound probe: cleaning the probe after every use, high-level disinfection, and covering the probe with a single-use barrier during the examination. There may be critical flaws in at least 2 of these steps as they are currently practiced. First, 2 widely used disinfectants, glutaraldehyde and orthophthalaldehyde, have recently been found to be ineffective at neutralizing human papilloma virus type 16 and type 18. Second, commercial ultrasound probe covers have an unacceptable rate of leakag

A model of the transmission of micro-organisms in a public setting and its correlation to pathogen infection risks.

AIM: Gastro-intestinal infections are widespread in the community and have considerable economic consequences. In this study, we followed chains of infection from a public toilet scenario, looking at infection risks by correlating the transmission of bacteria, fungi and viruses to our current knowledge of infectious doses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Transmission of Escherichia coli, Bacillus atrophaeus spores, Candida albicans and bacteriophage MS2 from hands to surfaces was examined in a transmission model, that is toilet brush, door handle to water tap. The load of viable pathogens was significan

Water faucets as a source of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection and colonization in neonatal and adult intensive care unit patients.

We investigated the occurrence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in our neonatal and adult intensive care units. Using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction, we showed spatial and temporal associations with clonal identity between patients' and adjacent faucets' clones. Both units' taps were highly colonized with P aeruginosa and with other waterborne bacteria. In the neonatal intensive care unit, strict use of sterile water for bathing neonates may have contributed to a reduction in clinical isolation of P aeruginosa postintervention.

A Rare Cause of Folliculitis by Dermatophilus congolensis in a Tropical Martial Arts Fighter.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophilus congolensis, a Gram-positive actinomycete, is a well-known animal pathogen but a rare cause of human skin infections. Human dermatophilosis is an infection associated with tropical environments and animal contact that remains frequently underdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of recurrent folliculitis in a 34-year-old male Muay Thai fighter returning from Thailand to Spain. The patient presented with pustular lesions on his lower limbs following frequent leg shaving and close physical contact during training. Microbiological culture from skin swabs yielde

Isolation of infectious laryngotracheitis virus in broiler chicken in Iran: First report.

In February 2019, a severe respiratory distress with co-infection of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) and Newcastle disease accompanied with Salmonella Enteritidis occurred in a broiler flock in the western region of Iran. Clinical signs included paralysis, torticollis, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, gasping and respiratory rale with high mortality. At necropsy, caseous diphtheritic membrane adherent to the larynx and trachea was observed. Microscopically, syncytial cells formation with dense eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were main histopathological findings in tracheal tissue

Diphtheria among alcoholic urban adults. A decade of experience in Seattle.

Three outbreaks of Corynebacterium diphtheriae infection occurred in Seattle's Skid Road from 1972 through 1982. The first involved a single toxigenic, intermedius biotype clone, whereas the second and third outbreaks involved nontoxigenic mitis and gravis strains. Of 1100 total infections, 947 (86%) were cutaneous. The incidence was highest in winter and spring. In Skid Road, the estimated attack rate during 17 months in 1974 to 1975 was 5% for whites and 27% for native Americans. Streptococcus pyogenes was isolated from 73% of diphtheritic and 41% of nondiphtheritic skin lesions (P less than
