Cocaine abuse continues to be a serious health problem worldwide. Despite intense research, there is still no FDA-approved medication to treat cocaine use disorder (CUD). In this report, we explored the potential utility of beta-caryophyllene (BCP), an FDA-approved food additive for the treatment of CUD. We found that BCP, when administered intraperitoneally or intragastrically, dose-dependently attenuated cocaine self-administration, cocaine-conditioned place preference, and cocaine-primed reinstatement of drug seeking in rats. In contrast, BCP failed to alter food self-administration or coca

The current cross-sectional study investigates the prevalence of the food addiction (FA) phenotype and its association with psychiatric disorders in bariatric surgery candidates. It also investigates the eating behavior characteristics associated with FA and the association between FA and loss of control over specific foods high in sugar, salt and/or fat. We included 128 bariatric surgery candidates and we assessed FA (YFAS 2.0), mood and anxiety disorders, suicidality, eating disorders (current bulimia nervosa and current anorexia nervosa), alcohol and tobacco use disorders (MINI 5.0.0, beck

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, neglect, or household violence, have been identified as significant risk factors for a multitude of physical and psychological conditions, motivating research to identify contributing mechanisms and conditions. Substantial evidence exists that supports strong associations between ACEs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders (EDs), and addictive disorders. Recent research has also elucidated a link between ACEs and ultra-processed food addiction (UPFA), a clinical presentation resembling a substance use disorde

OBJECTIVE: Food addiction (FA) is clinically relevant in binge-type eating disorders (EDs), yet its treatment relevance remains unclear in mainland China. This study examined (1) FA's associations with ED psychopathology and psychosocial functioning; (2) FA symptom changes following cognitive behavioral therapy-guided self-help (CBT-gsh); and (3) whether FA improvement was independently associated with changes in psychosocial functioning.
METHOD: In this assessor-blind randomized controlled trial, 87 adults with binge-type EDs were allocated to a 10-week asynchronous web-based CBT-gsh program

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the serious health problems among people with psychosis at the different stages. Therefore, finding effective strategies to mitigate and manage it in a timely manner before complications arise represents a big challenge for the early intervention scientific community. In this study, we aimed to contribute in advancing the field by testing the moderating role of sex between food addiction and body mass index (BMI) in a sample of young people at-risk for psychosis.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted during the period from February to April 2025 among yo

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity against polymicrobial (PM) biofilms of a condensed tannin extracted from astringent persimmon (PS-M), which is contained in refreshing beverages commercially available in Japan. Salivary PM biofilms were formed anaerobically on glass coverslips for 24 and 72 h and were treated for 5 min with sterilized deionized water (DW), 0.05 and 0.2 wt% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), and 0.5-4.0 wt% PS-M solution. The colony forming units (CFU/mL) were determined and morphological changes of the biofilms were observed by scanning electr

OBJECTIVE: Ultra-processed food addiction (UPFA) is increasingly recognized but remains controversial among eating disorder (ED) clinicians, partly due to concerns that introducing food addiction concepts might intensify dietary restraint, a core feature of EDs. This study examined whether integrating UPFA assessment, psychoeducation and treatment into residential treatment (RT) impacts ED symptomatology, particularly dietary restraint.
METHODS: Adults (N = 132) admitted to RT completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (mYFAS

BACKGROUND: Higher education students increasingly consume ultra-processed foods (UPFs) because they are affordable, convenient, and heavily marketed, and this pattern has been linked to adverse health outcomes. Beyond health risks, emerging evidence suggests UPFs may elicit addictive-like eating behaviors. To better understand which foods are perceived as most addictive, we applied a Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) approach-a stated-preference method-to quantify the relative perceived addictiveness of foods varying in level of processing.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted betwe

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a warning label on nicotine e-cigarettes and pouches: 'This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical'. Some brands marketing synthetic nicotine products have modified the warning ('This product contains tobacco-free nicotine (TFN)…'). The public health impact of altering the warning is unknown, so we examined its impact on risk perceptions and use intentions.
METHODS: 1000 participants completed an anonymous online survey. Participants viewed the black-and-white FDA and TFN-modified warning labels in isolation,

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) and ultra-processed food use disorder (UPFUD) have traditionally been examined as separate entities, resulting in ongoing tension between two primary perspectives: (1) dietary restraint as the main driver of loss-of-control eating pathology, and (2) the influence of the contemporary food environment, combined with stressors, as the driver of addiction-like food consumption. Both perspectives acknowledge developmental trauma as a key predisposing factor.
METHODS: Drawing from relevant articles in the PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar databases, thi

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Overconsumption of hyperpalatable foods and obesity are associated with reduced activity of brain regions involved in executive functions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Neurofeedback (NF) based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) appears as an easily feasible neuromodulation method to assist voluntary improvement of inhibitory cognitive control. This study is primarily designed to assess the efficacy of fNIRS-based NF training targeting the dlPFC for strengthening inhibitory control in patients with food addiction (FA) and obesity.

The obesity epidemic has led to the exploration of factors contributing to its etiology. Addictive eating, physical activity, and sleep behaviors have all been independently associated with obesity, and recent research suggests plausible interrelationships between food addiction, physical activity, and sleep. This study aims to investigate the relationship between food addiction with physical activity and sleep behavior. Australian adults were invited to complete an online survey which collected information including: demographics, food addiction symptoms, physical activity, sitting time and s

With the introduction of the category Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in DSM-5 for the first time behavioral addictions have entered the medical classification system. Food Addiction can be diagnosed with a 25-item questionnaire based on DSM-IV criteria for substance dependence. Food Addiction centers between substance-based addiction and non-substance-based behavioral addiction. To date, there is no evidence for a food component displaying addictive properties similar to psychotropic substances, such as cocaine or heroin. There is a lack of valid and reliable psychiatric-diagnostic

OBJECTIVES: Addiction offers a framework for the understanding of eating disorders, particularly those characterized by hyperphagia, with growing interest in food addiction. However, the application of the addiction model to anorexia nervosa remains more controversial. In this commented narrative review, we examine and discuss the addictive features of anorexia nervosa.
METHODS: Commented narrative review of the literature.
RESULTS: Anorexia nervosa could be the consequence of the loss of control of several objects of positive reinforcement: food restriction, physical hyperactivity, and food

OBJECTIVE: The paper conducts a network analysis of the fragmented literature on brand and addiction.
METHOD: A thematic map, thematic evolution, word cloud, co-citation analysis, and cooperation networks were utilized to identify brand addiction study trends and topics.
RESULTS: The data show that marketing and psychiatry have interdisciplinary groupings and multidisciplinary publications. These groups reflect societal changes, particularly the shift from traditional to digital challenges. Fast food addiction is different from alcohol and cigarette addictions due to its ease and extensive m

In recent decades, a growing body of research has emphasized the unique nature of substance abuse among women, necessitating a gender-specific approach and thus individualized therapeutic interventions. The purpose of this study, based on the existential approach, was to examine whether symptoms of several behavioral addictions (shopping, sex, gambling and betting, eating) and alcohol use disorder correlate with death anxiety, lack of meaning in life, and levels of mental resilience in a convenience sample of women. A total of 3,176 women participated in this online study and completed a demogr

This study examines if overweight/obesity are related to higher impulsivity, food addiction and depressive symptoms, and if these variables could be modified after 1 year of a multimodal intervention (diet, physical activity, psychosocial support). 342 adults (55-75 years) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) from the PREDIMED-Plus Cognition study were randomized to the intervention or to the control group (lifestyle recommendations). Cognitive and psychopathological assessments were performed at baseline and after 1-year follow-up. At baseline, higher impulsivity was linked t
