OBJECTIVE: To estimate positive serious psychological distress and suicide-risk screening prevalence across identity-by-food-security groups.
PARTICIPANTS: 215,330 US college students from four ACHA-NCHA IIIb administrations (Fall 2023 to Spring 2025).
METHODS: Prevalence was estimated across three identity groups and four food-security levels, and binary logistic models estimated mutually adjusted associations and tested identity-by-food-security interaction.
RESULTS: Serious distress ranged from 8.7% (cisgender heterosexual, high food security) to 55.9% (gender diverse, very low food secu

Food insecurity has been linked to poor physical and mental health as well as HIV risk behaviors. While prior research has shown that drug users are prone to food insecurity it is unclear if drug use exacerbates the physical and psychosocial consequences. A sample of women who used drugs (DU) (specifically heroin and cocaine) and women who did not use drugs (NDU) were examined to determine if the relationship between food insecurity and depression varied by drug use status. Approximately 29% (n=128) of the total sample experienced food insecurity. DU women were more likely to be food insecure.

Using data from an intercept survey of 428 adults who received free surplus produce at five distribution sites and qualitative data from 15 interviews with site personnel, we examined facilitators (e.g. community partnerships, coalition support) and challenges (e.g. limited refrigerated storage, lack of transportation infrastructure) to operating a food recovery and distribution program in Los Angeles County. Overall, this food system intervention appeared to fill an unmet need for recipients, nearly 80% of whom were food insecure and 60% visited a site several months/year or monthly. For many

Food allergies affect 32 million Americans. Restricted diets due to food allergies can be difficult to maintain especially when the household is food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the inability to acquire food for household members due to insufficient money or resources for food. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many people to face food insecurity for the first time with Latinx, Native American, and Black communities disproportionately affected. Because of the increase in food insecurity, this work group developed a survey regarding food insecurity screening. This survey was sent out

We examined whether dietary intake differs across household and child food security (FS) status, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation among Black children (ages 9-15) in a low-income urban setting. This cross-sectional survey used the USDA 18-item Household Food Security Survey, that includes the 8-item Child Module, and a validated FFQ to assess children's diet (n=451). Nutrient intake differed across child FS status, but not household FS. SNAP participation was associated with better micronutrient intake (vitamin D and calcium) among food secure children. Assess

PURPOSE: To assess whether personal and family history of criminal justice (CRJ) involvement is related to food insufficiency.
METHODS: Data are from the 2018 New York City Community Health Survey (n = 9580). Cross-sectional multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the association between CRJ involvement and food insufficiency.
RESULTS: Personal (relative risk ratio= 2.019, 95% confidence interval = 1.363, 2.994) and family history (relative risk ratios = 1.447, 95% confidence interval = 1.014, 2.066) of CRJ involvement is associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing modera

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence and identify the predictors of food insecurity among households in Los Angeles County with incomes below 300% of the federal poverty level.
METHODS: The Six-Item Short Form of the US Department of Agriculture's Household Food Security Scale was used as part of a 1999 county-wide, population-based, telephone survey.
RESULTS: The prevalence of food insecurity was 24.4% and was inversely associated with household income. Other independent predictors of food insecurity included the presence of children in the household (odds ratio (OR) 1.7, 95% confidence int

In the context of the increasingly polarized U.S. political environments of the 2016 and 2020 elections, how did rural caregivers think about food and health policies? To answer this question, researchers interviewed 50 low-income women living in two rural N.C. counties in 2016/7 and 2020 as part of a broader longitudinal qualitative study of family food environments. As participants reflected on elections and food assistance policies, caregivers focused on their experiences as mothers and described current or potential policies and programs in light of how they would impact their children. Auriculotemporal nerve (Frey) syndrome in children is rare, and may be misdiagnosed as food allergy. Trauma to the auriculotemporal nerve during forceps-assisted delivery has been implicated in about half of the reported childhood Frey syndrome cases and most patients present with unilateral involvement. We describe two Caucasian sisters with bilateral Frey syndrome, neither of whom was delivered with forceps assistance, and highlight its distinction from food allergy. Frey syndrome may occur in a familial pattern, and in the absence of a history of perinatal trauma.

Food allergy is a lifelong condition with no known treatment or cure. Allergy tests such as skin tests and blood tests are not always accurate when positive and are not necessarily diagnostic of a food allergy. A food allergy takes into consideration both the history of exposure and the testing. The food challenge is considered the diagnostic gold standard for food allergy. However, recent evidence suggests that not enough challenges are being performed. Several techniques exist with which clinicians can challenge patients. Providers who perform challenges should be familiar with assessing sig

The purpose of this analysis is twofold: to examine the types of health and support services provided by CARE Act funded providers to American Indians/Alaska Natives and to compare the characteristics and service utilization patterns for this group with those of individuals from other racial/ethnic groups. We present an analysis of the demographic characteristics, service utilization, and health outcomes of all HIV-infected clients who received services in five geographic areas at agencies that were funded through the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. BACKGROUND: Many United States toddlers do not meet recommended fruit and vegetable intakes, and intakes are lower in low-income households. Where caregivers shop shapes what they buy, yet studies of store choice have generally examined price and proximity alone, leaving other features of the retail environment largely unexamined.
OBJECTIVES: We examined how household characteristics influence grocery-store preferences among caregivers of toddlers from low-income households in Texas.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in which caregivers of toddlers aged 12 to 47 mo from low-inco

The North Carolina FarmsSHARE program distributes healthy, locally sourced food to low-income households across nearly 100 counties in the state through the Department of Agriculture's Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement. In this article, we present insights from a cross-sectional survey of stakeholders who were involved in implementing the program. We explore measures of satisfaction, perceived value, economic impact, quality of food, and community relationships within each stakeholder group (farmers, food hubs, and community-based organizations). We also discuss FarmsSHARE's

High levels of food insecurity have motivated some local jurisdictions to expand access to food outside of the charitable feeding system in the United States. This study compares the produce consumption behaviors among repeat and first-time participants of free food distributions at community-based sites. We administered a survey to 4,469 low-income participants at these sites during 2021-2023. The sample comprises recruits from 53 charitable feeding system sites (food pantries) and non-traditional sites (early childhood centers, schools, and clinics). We examined differences in consumption b

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a persistent and important public health and policy concern within Canada that continues to be widespread in the face of economic uncertainties and inflation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on food-based interventions that could reduce HFI in Canada.
METHODS: Studies that assessed a food-based intervention that might reduce food insecurity and measured HFI were included, regardless of whether that was the primary purpose of the study. Four databases were searched up to 19 February 2025. Screening of abstr

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of social needs by English proficiency using data from Northwell Health's social determinants of health screening program. The screening program evaluates 12 domains of social needs: material need, employment, medical-legal assistance, health insurance, public benefits, health literacy, transportation, medical care, utilities, housing quality, food security, and housing insecurity. We have identified patients to have limited English proficiency if they have selected a language other than English as their primary language.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, 17.9% of US households with children experienced food insecurity. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to reduce food insecurity, persistent under-enrollment, labeled the "SNAP Gap," limits its impact. Schools represent a strategic yet underutilized setting to reach eligible families. This study examined school-based strategies to increase caregivers' awareness and knowledge of SNAP.
METHODS: Twelve diverse school districts implemented stigma-free SNAP outreach initiatives, reaching 8601 participants across 37 outreach events statewide. Caregive

INTRODUCTION: Populations with low income and food insecurity report low fruit and vegetable intake and high associated diet-related disease. The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program supports grantees to implement nutrition incentive projects nationwide to provide individuals participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program with incentives to facilitate the purchase and consumption of fruits and vegetables. This study examines the associations between the length of Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program nutrition incentive participation and fruit and vegetable intake, f

BACKGROUND: Many patients are undernourished during hospitalisation. The clinical consequences of this include lassitude, an increased risk of complications and prolonged convalescence. The aim of the study is 1) to implement a new organisation with a focus on improving the quality of the nutritional care of medical inpatients at risk of undernutrition, and 2) to investigate the effect of the intervention.
METHODS: Social and healthcare assistants are educated to the higher level of nutritional and healthcare assistants to provide nutritional care in daily practice to undernourished medical i
