Pesticide residues in canned foods, fruits, and vegetables: the application of Supercritical Fluid Extraction and chromatographic techniques in the analysis.

Multiple pesticide residues have been observed in some samples of canned foods, frozen vegetables, and fruit jam, which put the health of the consumers at risk of adverse effects. It is quite apparent that such a state of affairs calls for the need of more accurate, cost-effective, and rapid analytical techniques capable of detecting the minimum concentrations of the multiple pesticide residues. The aims of this paper were first, to determine the effectiveness of the use of Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) and Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) techniques in the analysis of the level

What unhealthy food and beverage advertisements appeal to- and promote obesity amongst- adolescent children in urban South Africa?

Unhealthy food and beverage marketing is harmful to all children because it generates preferences for foods associated with obesity. Our aim was to expand knowledge about the appeal of food advertising to urban-dwelling South African teenage children. We asked 49 boys and girls aged 14-16-years-old, from three Johannesburg high schools, about food advertisements that appealed to them and their peers in six same-gender focus group discussions. We conducted thematic analysis of the discussions and content analysis of 55 advertisements that participants identified as appealing. Classic features o

Mitigating the burden of dental caries among adolescents and young adults by targeting social media influencers.

Oral disease among young people is a major global public health concern owing to its magnitude and impact on the health, quality of life, and wellbeing of affected individuals. Modern food marketing approaches have undergone a paradigm shift from traditional advertising toward personalized digital campaigns based on the online experiences of the youth. Marketing by social media influencers is powerful as adolescents consider them relatable and trustworthy peers and not just advertisers. Social media influencers tend to shape identity formation in young people by presenting them with an idealiz

Interindividual Variation in Chronic Inflammation in Northern Lao People's Democratic Republic.

OBJECTIVES: In many rural regions of developing countries, increasing market access is reshaping local food systems. Traditional diets rooted in local agriculture are being replaced by market-driven alternatives. It is suspected that this dietary transition will contribute to rising risks of non-communicable diseases through increased chronic inflammation. This study, conducted in northern Lao People's Democratic Republic, investigated the association between dietary transition and concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) as a biomarker of chronic inflammation in three villages with varying

Fixes that Fail: A system archetype for examining racialized structures within the food system.

Access to fresh and healthy food within a neighborhood has been identified as a social mechanism contributing to community health. Grounded in the understanding that challenges related to equity within a food system are both structural and systemic, our research demonstrates how systems thinking can further understandings of food system complexity. Within systems thinking, we provide an illustration of how system archetypes offer an analytic tool for examining complex community issues. We map semi-structured interview data from community stakeholders (N = 22) to the "Fixes that Fail" system ar

Housing circumstances are associated with household food access among low-income urban families.

Household food insecurity is a pervasive problem in North America with serious health consequences. While affordable housing has been cited as a potential policy approach to improve food insecurity, the relationship between conventional notions of housing affordability and household food security is not well understood. Furthermore, the influence of housing subsidies, a key policy intervention aimed at improving housing affordability in Western countries, on food insecurity is unclear. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 473 families in market rental (n = 222) and subsidized (n = 251) hou

Organic foods for children: health or hype.

Organic foods are promoted as superior and safer options for today's health-conscious consumer. Manufacturers of organic food claim it to be pesticide-free and better in terms of micronutrients. Consumers have to pay heavily for these products--and they are willing to--provided they are assured of the claimed advantages. Scientific data proving the health benefits of organic foods, especially in children, are lacking. Indian Government has developed strict guidelines and certification procedures to keep a check on manufacturers in this financially attractive market. American Academy of Pediatr

Early impact of a new food store intervention on health-related outcomes.

This study investigated the early impact of a community-based food intervention, the Good Food Junction (GFJ), a full-service grocery store (September 2012 - January 2016) in a former food desert in Saskatoon, Canada. The hypothesis tested was that frequent shopping at the GFJ improved food security and selected health-related outcomes among shoppers, and the impact was moderated by socioeconomic factors. Longitudinal data were collected from 156 GFJ shoppers, on three occasions: 12-, 18-, and 24-months post-opening. Participants were grouped into three categories based on the frequency of sho

Food safety in Peru: A review of fresh produce production and challenges in the public health system.

Peru has a commodities-based economy where agriculture plays an essential role in the nation's development. Among agricultural products, fruits and vegetables are foundational to Peruvian culture and a healthy and nutritious diet. Produce is also the primary income source for thousands of small-scale farmers and producers throughout the country. Peru has significant potential to export agricultural and value-added products. Nevertheless, the Peruvian food chain has weak food safety and quality standards, limiting access to international markets. The inherent lack of food safety surveillance an

Decontamination Efficacy of Acetic Acid on Microbial Load in Fresh Produce from Open Markets in Khulna City, Bangladesh.

Vegetables are exceptionally nutrient-dense food sources essential to our diet and are mostly preferred to be consumed uncooked for maximum benefits. In Bangladesh, they are predominantly sold in outdoor markets. However, poor handling practices can lead to bacterial contamination with pathogenic microorganisms, increasing the risk of severe foodborne infections. This study aims to quantify the bacterial load of fresh vegetables and evaluate the impact of the antimicrobial agent acetic acid on the microbial quality of fresh produce available in the local markets.
