Forecasting the evolution of fast-changing transportation networks using machine learning.

Transportation networks play a critical role in human mobility and the exchange of goods, but they are also the primary vehicles for the worldwide spread of infections, and account for a significant fraction of CO2 emissions. We investigate the edge removal dynamics of two mature but fast-changing transportation networks: the Brazilian domestic bus transportation network and the U.S. domestic air transportation network. We use machine learning approaches to predict edge removal on a monthly time scale and find that models trained on data for a given month predict edge removals for the same mon

The Proposition for Bipolar Depression Forecasting Based on Wearable Data Collection.

Bipolar depression is treated wrongly as unipolar depression, on average, for 8 years. It is shown that this mismedication affects the occurrence of a manic episode and aggravates the overall condition of patients with bipolar depression. Significant effort was invested in early detection of depression and forecasting of responses to certain therapeutic approaches using a combination of features extracted from standard and online testing, wearables monitoring, and machine learning. In the case of unipolar depression, this approach yielded evidence that this data-based computational psychiatry

Forecasting COVID-19 pandemic in Alberta, Canada using modified ARIMA models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model is a popular model to forecast future values of a time series using the past values of the same series. However, if the variance of the time series varies with time, the 95% confidence interval estimated by the ARIMA will not be accurate. This study proposes a method to revise the ARIMA model to suit time series with heteroscedasticity. METHODS: Multiple historical ARIMA models were constructed with publicly available COVID-19 data in Alberta, Canada. The time series between different time periods were applied

Probabilistic seasonal dengue forecasting in Vietnam: A modelling study using superensembles.

BACKGROUND: With enough advanced notice, dengue outbreaks can be mitigated. As a climate-sensitive disease, environmental conditions and past patterns of dengue can be used to make predictions about future outbreak risk. These predictions improve public health planning and decision-making to ultimately reduce the burden of disease. Past approaches to dengue forecasting have used seasonal climate forecasts, but the predictive ability of a system using different lead times in a year-round prediction system has been seldom explored. Moreover, the transition from theoretical to operational systems

Forecasting the final disease size: comparing calibrations of Bertalanffy-Pütter models.

Using monthly data from the Ebola-outbreak 2013-2016 in West Africa, we compared two calibrations for data fitting, least-squares (SSE) and weighted least-squares (SWSE) with weights reciprocal to the number of new infections. To compare (in hindsight) forecasts for the final disease size (the actual value was observed at month 28 of the outbreak) we fitted Bertalanffy-Pütter growth models to truncated initial data (first 11, 12, …, 28 months). The growth curves identified the epidemic peak at month 10 and the relative errors of the forecasts (asymptotic limits) were below 10%, if 16 or more m

Rapid Forecasting of Cholera Risk in Mozambique: Translational Challenges and Opportunities.

Disasters, such as cyclones, create conditions that increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks. Epidemic forecasts can be valuable for targeting highest risk populations before an outbreak. The two main barriers to routine use of real-time forecasts include scientific and operational challenges. First, accuracy may be limited by availability of data and the uncertainty associated with the inherently stochastic processes that determine when and where outbreaks happen and spread. Second, even if data are available, the appropriate channels of communication may prevent their use for decisi

Time series model for forecasting the number of new admission inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Hospital crowding is a rising problem, effective predicting and detecting managment can helpful to reduce crowding. Our team has successfully proposed a hybrid model combining both the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and the nonlinear autoregressive neural network (NARNN) models in the schistosomiasis and hand, foot, and mouth disease forecasting study. In this paper, our aim is to explore the application of the hybrid ARIMA-NARNN model to track the trends of the new admission inpatients, which provides a methodological basis for reducing crowding. METHODS: We use

Transmission dynamics of cholera in Yemen, 2017: a real time forecasting.

BACKGROUND: A large epidemic of cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, serotype Ogawa, has been ongoing in Yemen, 2017. To improve the situation awareness, the present study aimed to forecast the cholera epidemic, explicitly addressing the reporting delay and ascertainment bias. METHODS: Using weekly incidence of suspected cases, updated as a revised epidemic curve every week, the reporting delay was explicitly incorporated into the estimation model. Using the weekly case fatality risk as calculated by the World Health Organization, ascertainment bias was adjusted, enabling us to parameterize th

Overcorrection for Social-Categorization Information Moderates Impact Bias in Affective Forecasting.

Plural societies require individuals to forecast how others-both in-group and out-group members-will respond to gains and setbacks. Typically, correcting affective forecasts to include more relevant information improves their accuracy by reducing their extremity. In contrast, we found that providing affective forecasters with social-category information about their targets made their forecasts more extreme and therefore less accurate. In both political and sports contexts, forecasters across five experiments exhibited greater impact bias for both in-group and out-group members (e.g., a Democra

Case studies on forecasting for innovative technologies: frequent revisions improve accuracy.

Health technology forecasting is designed to provide reliable predictions about costs, utilization, diffusion, and other market realities before the technologies enter routine clinical use. In this article we address three questions central to forecasting's usefulness: Are early forecasts sufficiently accurate to help providers acquire the most promising technology and payers to set effective coverage policies? What variables contribute to inaccurate forecasts? How can forecasters manage the variables to improve accuracy? We analyzed forecasts published between 2007 and 2010 by the ECRI Instit

Forecasting impact injuries of unrestrained occupants in railway vehicle passenger compartments.

OBJECTIVE: In order to predict the injury parameters of the occupants corresponding to different experimental parameters and to determine impact injury indices conveniently and efficiently, a model forecasting occupant impact injury was established in this work. METHODS: The work was based on finite experimental observation values obtained by numerical simulation. First, the various factors influencing the impact injuries caused by the interaction between unrestrained occupants and the compartment's internal structures were collated and the most vulnerable regions of the occupant's body were

A novel hybrid forecasting model for PM₁₀ and SO₂ daily concentrations.

Air-quality forecasting in urban areas is difficult because of the uncertainties in describing both the emission and meteorological fields. The use of incomplete information in the training phase restricts practical air-quality forecasting. In this paper, we propose a hybrid artificial neural network and a hybrid support vector machine, which effectively enhance the forecasting accuracy of an artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) by revising the error term of the traditional methods. The hybrid methodology can be described in two stages. First, we applied the ANN or

Global, regional, and national prevalence of adult overweight and obesity, 1990-2021, with forecasts to 2050: a forecasting study for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity is a global epidemic. Forecasting future trajectories of the epidemic is crucial for providing an evidence base for policy change. In this study, we examine the historical trends of the global, regional, and national prevalence of adult overweight and obesity from 1990 to 2021 and forecast the future trajectories to 2050. METHODS: Leveraging established methodology from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study, we estimated the prevalence of overweight and obesity among individuals aged 25 years and older by age and sex for 204 countri

Forecasting of infectious disease epidemics in sexual networks using attenuated renewal processes.

Forecasting emerging infectious disease outbreaks is particularly challenging for sexual networks of men who have sex with men (MSM), where transmission can be shaped by heterogeneous and overdispersed contact structures, mixing assortativity, and both one-time and recurrent partnerships. Using stochastic epidemic simulations on synthetic MSM networks and empirical mpox case data from major cities, we systematically evaluated five classes of short-term forecasting models, from random walk approaches to semi-mechanistic attenuated renewal processes. Model performance was assessed using the cont

A nationwide spatiotemporal forecasting model for bacterial gastroenteritis surveillance in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial gastroenteritis is a public health challenge in South Korea, largely driven by foodborne pathogens including Salmonella, Vibrio, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), and Campylobacter. While national surveillance systems provide valuable epidemiological data, they primarily rely on retrospective reporting and have limited capacity to anticipate future outbreaks. This limitation highlights the need for predictive approaches that can support timely public health interventions. METHODS: In this study, we constructed a two-stage probabilistic forecasting framework that

EI-Loss: Enhancing infectious disease forecasting via HSIC-guided signal-noise separation.

Accurate forecasting of infectious disease dynamics is critical for public health preparedness, yet conventional deep learning models rely on generic loss functions (MSE/MAE) that fail to disentangle true transmission dynamics from systematic surveillance distortions and ignore epidemiological temporal structure. We propose Epidemic-Informed Loss (EI-Loss), which enhances predictive performance by incorporating a Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC) regularizer. By maximizing dependence between model residuals and surrogate noise, EI-Loss extracts robust transmission signals while del

Integrating epidemiological modeling and time-series forecasting to optimize pandemic patient allocation.

BACKGROUND: This paper addresses the challenge of allocating patients to healthcare facilities with limited capacities during infectious disease outbreaks. The method is based on a hierarchical time-series model to forecast hospital bed demand and a mixed-integer nonlinear mathematical model for allocating patients among a set of regions to minimize disease spread. METHODS: Our contributions include (1) a new hierarchical time-series model for forecasting hospital bed demand to enhance regional predictive accuracy, (2) a mathematical model that integrates the forecasting model with a Susceptib

Forecasting Local Surges in COVID-19 Hospitalizations through Adaptive Decision Tree Classifiers.

IntroductionDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, many communities across the United States experienced surges in hospitalizations, which strained the local hospital capacity. Some risk metrics, such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Community Levels, were developed to predict the impact of COVID-19 on the community-level health care system based on routine surveillance data. However, they had limited utility as they were not routinely updated based on accumulating data and were not directly linked to specific outcomes, such as surges in COVID-19 hospitalizations beyond local
