An investigation of the inter and intra post-mortem microstructural change seen in an experimental series of pigs exposed to a marine environment.

The identification of marine post-mortem microstructural change in human bone tissue is valuable in forensic casework as evidence of an individual's burial history. This study examined micro-tunneling in pig-bone tissue microstructure that had been submerged in a marine environment. The objective of the experiment was to assess total distribution of post-mortem microstructural change and degree of preservation within and between individual submerged pig skeletons. 14 juvenile pig carcasses were submerged in British Columbia at 92-300 m depths, between four to eight months. Seven pigs were indi

Electric or traumatic injury? The role of histopathological investigations.

Analysis of wounds is crucial in forensic medicine to prove how an injury was caused. In many cases, microscopic analysis may be decisive. It is often difficult to distinguish macroscopic skin lesions resulting from electrical, mechanical and from thermal trauma where these occur simultaneously and to formulate a correct differential diagnosis. We report two cases in which the injuries found on the bodies and the manner of death raised uncertainty. An autopsy was performed. External examination of the bodies showed skin injuries that needed histopathological analysis to reconstruct the dynamic

Lighting up forensic science by aggregation-induced emission: A review.

Forensic science requires a fast, sensitive, and anti-interfering imaging tool for on-site investigation and bio-analysis. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon exhibits remarkable luminescence properties (large Stokes shift, diverse molecular structures, and high photo-stability), which can provide a viable solution for on-site analysis, while at the same time overcoming the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Based on the outstanding performance in chemical analysis and bio-sensing, AIE materials have great prospects in the field of forensic science. Therefore, the app

Forensic ethology: An operational model to enhance forensic pathologists' knowledge in animal attacks.

Animal attacks are a significant and increasingly frequent forensic problem, yet forensic pathological research remains largely confined to the description of individual bite marks and wounds. This narrative review, conducted according to a structured and reproducible methodology informed by the principles of the PRISMA framework, aims to (i) synthesise species-specific lesion patterns and the underlying ethology of the domestic and wild animals most frequently implicated in human attacks, and (ii) propose a structured, probabilistic operational model to support forensic practitioners in the i

A Narrative Review on the Clinical Relevance of Imaging the Circumventricular Brain Organs and Performing Their Anatomical and Histopathological Examination in Acute and Postacute COVID-19.

Autopsy followed by histopathological examination is foundational in clinical and forensic medicine for discovering and understanding pathological changes in disease, their underlying processes, and cause of death. Imaging technology has become increasingly important for advancing clinical research and practice, given its noninvasive, in vivo and ex vivo applicability. Medical and forensic autopsy can benefit greatly from advances in imaging technology that lead toward minimally invasive, whole-brain virtual autopsy. Brain autopsy followed by histopathological examination is still the hallmark

[Research Advances in Postmortem Chemistry].

Postmortem chemistry is becoming more and more essential in routine forensic pathology and has made considerable progress over the past years. Biochemical analyses of vitreous humor, blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid may provide important information in determining the cause of death or in elucidating forensic issues. Postmortem chemistry may be essential for the determination of cause of death when morphological methods (diabetes mellitus, alcoholic ketoacidosis and electrolytic disorders) cannot detect the pathophysiological changes involved in the death process. It can also provide many

[On the forensic significance of cadaveric spots color in death from general hypothermia].

The forensic medical investigation of occurrence mechanisms (causes) and color spectrum of cadaveric spots in corpses of persons who were victims of general accidental hypothermia remains a relevant topic, causing many discussions in the scientific literature. Issues concerning the color, localization, degree of pronouncement and timing of cadaveric spots occurrence require careful analysis as they are important both for forensic medical practice and criminalistics and for understanding the processes developing in the human body after death. In the investigation of cadaveric spots resulting fr

Histopathology in medico-legal autopsies: Clinical foundation, legal mandate, and judicial guarantee.

Histopathological examination remains a cornerstone of the medico-legal autopsy. It provides essential insights into the vitality and chronology of injuries, as well as the functional mechanisms of death-elements that cannot be reliably assessed through gross examination or postmortem imaging alone. Despite this, a growing number of forensic institutions are progressively excluding histological analysis from standard protocols, particularly in cases of violent death. This shift is often justified by operational, financial, or doctrinal arguments, but represents a methodological regression with

Fatal mechanical asphyxia: a comprehensive forensic review with an illustrative case.

Fatal asphyxia is one of the most diagnostically complex categories of sudden death because its macroscopic signs are often subtle, heterogeneous and easily confounded with post-mortem artefacts. We reviewed 38 English-language publications (2000-2025) that contained autopsy-confirmed asphyxial fatalities and re-coded every case into a five-group typology-mechanical, electrical, toxic (chemical), ambient-hypoxia and pathological (endogenous). Recurrent external findings, internal soft-tissue lesions and ancillary toxicological or histochemical markers were extracted, and the literature trends

Artefacts due to putrefactive gas production - an overview.

Autolytic and putrefactive processes can cause considerable alterations to soft tissues and internal organs that may complicate forensic assessments. An overview was undertaken of the range of taphonomonic changes and processes that may result from postmortem putrefactive gas accumulation. The most commonly encountered phenomenon was purging of putrefactive fluids from the nose and mouth that was on occasion confused with bleeding from antemortem trauma. Much less common was putrefactive 'rigor mortis' where the limbs extend due to the accumulation of soft tissue and subcutaneous gas. This may

Validation and optimization of the diatom L/D ratio as a diagnostic marker for drowning.

If a dead body is discovered in water, it nearly always raises the question about the cause of death, often associated with the persistent problem to differentiate between a drowning incident and post-mortem immersion. In numerous cases, a reliable confirmation of death by drowning is often only possible by a combination of diagnoses obtained from autopsy and additional investigations. As to the latter, the use of diatoms has been suggested (and debated) since decades. Based on the consideration that diatoms are present in almost every natural waterbody and are unavoidably incorporated when wa

Lethal threat in the use of glass doors at home: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Various instruments, including glass fragments, can inflict sharp-force damage, resulting in injuries ranging from superficial wounds to life-threatening trauma. This case report explores the lethal consequences of a 78-year-old man accidentally sustaining a stabbed-incised wound after falling against an ordinary glass door, leading to fatal bleeding from the subclavian artery. CASE REPORT: The man's fall caused a sharp-edged glass fragment to penetrate his neck, resulting in a fatal outcome despite resuscitation attempts. AUTOPSY FINDINGS: The autopsy revealed a transected subcl

Research Progress in Virtopsy of Drowning.

Dead bodies found in the water are not all caused by drowning. The important task of forensic identification is to distinguish between entering the water before and after death, and to clarify the cause of death. In the practice of forensic identification, drowning is generally diagnosed on the basis of comprehensive considerations such as cadaveric signs, histopathological examinations, and diatom tests, with the exclusion of other causes of death. The emergence of virtopsy techniques provides new insights for the diagnosis of drowning. This paper reviews the post-mortem imaging studies of si

The "mystery" of the train station: The importance of a forensic approach to a rare case of survival after a train-pedestrian collision.

In the early morning a 28-year-old man was found lying on the tracks of a railway station with head injuries and fractures of the cervical spine resulting in permanent quadriplegia. He was in a club about 1 km away until about 2 h earlier and did not have any recollection of what could have happened. Was he the victim of an assault, did he fall down or was he hit by a passing train? The solution to this "mystery" came from a forensic evaluation that included the forensic branches of pathology, chemistry, merceology and genetics as well as the scene evaluation. Through these different steps, th
