[Human visual evoked potentials to spatially structured stimuli in normal subjects and early object vision deprivation].

For the analysis of plastic rearrangements in the visual system under the influence of different conditions of adaptation and early deprivation of objective vision, VEPs to checkerboard patterns with various check sizes were studied in subjects with normal vision and with amblyopia resulting from a congenital cataract. Sensitivity of P 180-230 component to the check sizes was revealed as well as a shift of its optimum toward bigger sizes following a transition from the light to the dark adaptation. In amblyopic subjects, in response to the checkerboard patterns the amplitude of P 80-120 compon

Visuotactile object processing in binocular rivalry: The role of shape congruence, voluntary action, and spatial colocalization.

Multisensory information can help resolve perceptual ambiguity in situations such as the alternating visual experience during binocular rivalry. Across four experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented spiky and round rival targets while simultaneously touching spiky, neutral, or round shapes in three-dimensional (3D) printed form. The primary aim was to investigate the influence of visuotactile shape congruence in the curvature dimension. In addition, the roles of voluntary action and spatial colocalization on successful crossmodal integration were investigated. Voluntary action w

Prehension movements directed to approaching objects: influence of stimulus velocity on the transport and the grasp components.

In this investigation we studied the influence of object velocity on the transport and on the grasp components of prehension movements directed to approaching objects. Three experiments were carried out. In the first experiment six subjects were required to reach and grasp a sphere that approached them with a constant velocity. The effects of four velocities were studied. The results showed that the end point of the arm movement changed with object velocity: nearer the body with higher than with lower object velocities. Transport velocity increased with movement amplitude and the deceleration

Computational origins of shape perception.

Shape perception is central to human vision, but its developmental origins remain unknown. Here we show that shape perception develops from three ingredients: (1) generic fitting systems, (2) embodied visual experiences, and (3) biologically plausible sensors. We first show that generic fitting models (transformers) trained on embodied visual experiences change from color-based to shape-based visual systems. We then perform in silico controlled-rearing experiments to determine what causes this developmental change. We find that view diversity-experiencing many views of the same object-produces

Deficit of visual contour integration in dyslexia.

PURPOSE: The visual processing of text occurs spontaneously in most readers. Dyslexic persons, however, often report both somatic symptoms and perceptual distortions when trying to read. It is possible that the perceptual distortions experienced by those with dyslexia reflect a disturbance in the basic mechanisms supporting perceptual organization at the early stages of visual processing. Integration of information over extended areas of visual space can be measured psychophysically in a task that requires the detection of a path defined by aligned, spatially narrow-band elements on a dense fi

The visual representation of 3D object orientation in parietal cortex.

An accurate representation of three-dimensional (3D) object orientation is essential for interacting with the environment. Where and how the brain visually encodes 3D object orientation remains unknown, but prior studies suggest the caudal intraparietal area (CIP) may be involved. Here, we develop rigorous analytical methods for quantifying 3D orientation tuning curves, and use these tools to the study the neural coding of surface orientation. Specifically, we show that single neurons in area CIP of the rhesus macaque jointly encode the slant and tilt of a planar surface, and that across the p

A neural model of visual figure-ground segregation from kinetic occlusion.

Freezing is an effective defense strategy for some prey, because their predators rely on visual motion to distinguish objects from their surroundings. An object moving over a background progressively covers (deletes) and uncovers (accretes) background texture while simultaneously producing discontinuities in the optic flow field. These events unambiguously specify kinetic occlusion and can produce a crisp edge, depth perception, and figure-ground segmentation between identically textured surfaces--percepts which all disappear without motion. Given two abutting regions of uniform random texture

Attention parameters in visual search tasks in different age groups.

Attention processes were studied using a model based on visual searches for a specified element in grids of size 3 x 3 and 7 x 7 cm displayed on a monitor screen. Five age groups took part in the experimental studies: children of five and seven years, a group of 15-year-old adolescents, a group aged 20-35 years, and a group aged over 60 years; a total of 62 subjects took part. Statistical analysis showed that the latter three groups were not different from each other and were used as an adult control group for comparison with results from children. Five types of search were used: one difficult

Impaired visual search in dyslexia relates to the role of the magnocellular pathway in attention.

We tested the hypothesis that in a cluttered visual scene, the magnocellular (M) pathway is crucial for focusing attention serially on the objects in the field. Since developmental dyslexia is commonly associated with an M pathway deficit, we compared reading impaired children and age-matched normal readers in a search task that required the detection of a target defined by the conjunction of two features, namely form and colour, that are processed by the parvocellular dominated ventral neocortical stream. The dyslexic group's performance was significantly poorer than the controls when there w

Object-based attention sustains feature binding in working memory without requiring strategic control.

Maintaining feature bindings in visual working memory (VWM) is thought to require object-based attention: consuming this resource during retention selectively impairs binding memory while sparing memory for the constituent features. However, existing demonstrations have almost exclusively used long (~ 1,000 ms) encoding windows, which permit not only rapid, automatic binding but also a slower strategic-control process that elaborates and stabilizes the initial representations. It is therefore unclear whether object-based attention is needed to maintain bindings as such, or only those bindings

The Representation of Color across the Human Visual Cortex: Distinguishing Chromatic Signals Contributing to Object Form Versus Surface Color.

Many theories of visual object perception assume the visual system initially extracts borders between objects and their background and then "fills in" color to the resulting object surfaces. We investigated the transformation of chromatic signals across the human ventral visual stream, with particular interest in distinguishing representations of object surface color from representations of chromatic signals reflecting the retinal input. We used fMRI to measure brain activity while participants viewed figure-ground stimuli that differed either in the position or in the color contrast polarity

"What?" and "where?" versus "what is where?": the impact of task on coding of object form and position in the lateral occipital complex.

Fast and accurate recognition of both the identities and positions of objects in visual space is critical to deciphering visual environments. Studies in both humans and nonhuman primates have demonstrated that neural populations in ventral temporal visual areas are jointly tuned to both the form and position of objects, allowing information about the identities of objects to be "tagged" with their positions. Because not all behaviors demand that the identities of objects be associated with position information with equal precision, however, the present study asked whether the spatial tuning of

The influence of shape cues on the perception of lighting direction.

Three scene properties determine the luminances in the image of a shaded object: the material reflectance, the illuminant position, and the object's shape. Because all three properties determine the image, one cannot solve for any one property without knowing the other two. Nevertheless, people perceive consistent 3D shape and consistent lighting in shaded images; they must therefore be making assumptions about the unknown properties. We conducted two psychophysical experiments to determine how viewers use shape information to estimate the lighting direction from shaded images. In the first ex

Lightness, filling-in, and the fundamental role of context in visual perception.

Visual perception is defined by the unique spatial interactions that distinguish it from the point-to-point precision of a photometer. Over several decades, Lothar Spillmann has made key observations about the nature of these interactions and the role of context in perception. Our lab has explored the perceptual properties of spatial interactions and more generally the importance of visual context for neuronal responses and perception. Our investigations into the spatiotemporal dynamics of lightness provide insight into underlying mechanisms. For example, backward masking and luminance modulat

Motion processing specialization in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by severe spatial deficits and relatively spared language. Although initial research suggested that WS entails a generalized motion processing deficit, later work demonstrated intact biological motion perception in people with WS, reflecting a sparing of a specific motion perception system. The present study examined whether this sparing is unique to biological motion, or extends to other motion tasks as well. WS children and adults and normal controls were tested to examine developmental changes across a variety of motion tasks.

Children with spina bifida perceive visual illusions but not multistable figures.

We compared 32 children with spina bifida and 32 age-matched controls on two classes of illusory perception, one involving visual illusions and the other, multistable figures. Children with spina bifida were as adept as age peers in the perception of visual illusions concerned with size, length, and area, but were impaired in the perception of multistable figures that involved figure-ground reversals, illusory contours, perspective reversing, and paradoxical figures. That children with spina bifida reliably perceive illusions that rely on inappropriate constancy scaling of size, length, and ar
