Simulation in healthcare : journal of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare2016eng
INTRODUCTION: The main goal of this study was to produce an adaptable learning platform using virtual learning and distributed simulation, which can be used to train health care workers, across a wide geographical area, key safety messages regarding infection prevention control (IPC).
METHODS: A situationally responsive agile methodology, Scrum, was used to develop a distributed simulation module using short 1-week iterations and continuous synchronous plus asynchronous communication including end users and IPC experts. The module contained content related to standard IPC precautions (includi

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Acquisition of clinical skills in medical education requires repeated practice. Current medical education mandates simulator-based clinical skills training programs. The details of our simulator-based clinical skills training on inguino-scrotal disorders (ISD) of the childhood, and the feedbacks obtained from the trainees are reported
METHODS: From 1999 to 2001, simulator-based skill training on ISD is given to second- and fourth-year students (n = 207 and n = 128, respectively) and to primary health care physicians during postgraduate continuing medical education program

UNLABELLED: The human visual system must extract reliable object information from cluttered visual scenes several times per second, and this temporal constraint has been taken as evidence that the underlying cortical processing must be strictly feedforward. Here we use a novel rapid reinforcement paradigm to probe the temporal dynamics of the neural circuit underlying rapid object shape perception and thus test this feedforward assumption. Our results show that two shape stimuli are optimally reinforcing when separated in time by ∼60 ms, suggesting an underlying recurrent circuit with a time c

Two experiments were conducted to explore the feasibility of training mildly retarded adolescents to solve class-inclusion problems. In Experiment 1, the effects of training consisting primarily of feedback were investigated. In Experiment 2, training with feedback alone vs. training with feedback plus a counting strategy was compared. Both experiments assessed the generality of training effects to specific training and/or posttest formats. Results suggested that training was generally effective in improving performance with untrained class-inclusion problems on immediate and delayed posttests

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often share phenotypes of repetitive behaviors, possibly underpinned by abnormal decision-making. To compare neural correlates underlying decision-making between these disorders, brain activation of boys with ASD (N = 24), OCD (N = 20) and typically developing controls (N = 20) during gambling was compared, and computational modeling compared performance. Patients were unimpaired on number of risky decisions, but modeling showed that both patient groups had lower choice consistency and relied less on reinforcement learning

Haptic feedback has been employed to enhance shape perception during grasp interactions, improving immersion and task performance in extended reality (XR). Although wearable devices offer precise multi-phalangeal haptic feedback, their bulkiness and complexity often hinder practicality. In addition, fingertip-based tactile feedback often limits users' ability to perceive a continuous and sequential sensation across the finger surfaces during power grasp. We present VibGrasp, a haptic shape-rendering method and a supporting haptic glove that synchronizes spatiotemporal vibrotactile feedback acr

BACKGROUND: Resilience to stress is critical in today's military service. Past work has shown that experts handle stress in more productive ways compared to novices. Training that specifically addresses stress regulation, such as the Graduated Stress Exposure paradigm, can build individual and unit resilience as well as adaptability so that stressors trigger effective stress coping skills rather than stress injury.
OBJECTIVE: We developed the Stress Resilience Training System (SRTS), a product of Perceptronics Solutions Inc., to demonstrate that a software training app can provide an effectiv

BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires each residency program to have a Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) but does not specify how the PEC should be designed. We sought to develop a PEC that promotes resident leadership and provides actionable feedback.
METHODS: Participants were residents and faculty in the Traditional Internal Medicine residency program at Yale School of Medicine (YSM). One resident and one faculty member facilitated a 1-h structured group discussion to obtain resident feedback on each rotation. PEC co-facilitators summarized the feed

The ability to learn is assumed to support successful recovery and rehabilitation therapy after stroke. Hence, learning impairments may reduce the recovery potential. Here, the hypothesis is tested that stroke survivors have deficits in feedback-driven implicit learning. Stroke survivors (n=30) and healthy age-matched control subjects (n=21) learned a probabilistic classification task with brain activation measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging in a subset of these individuals (17 stroke and 10 controls). Stroke subjects learned slower than controls to classify cues. After being

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. Despite new therapies, progress in this area has been slow, and outcomes remain poor even in the hospital setting, where providers, drugs, and devices are readily available. This is partly attributed to the quality of resuscitation, which is an important determinant of survival for patients who experience cardiac arrest. Systems problems, such as deficiencies in the physical space or equipment design, hospital-level policies, work culture, and poor leadership and teamwork, are now known to contribute signif

Dr. David Price and his colleagues, in their article in this issue of Academic Medicine, summarize the findings from recent studies regarding the association of Maintenance of Certification and physicians' learning and improvements in care. Their evaluation demonstrates that physicians often changed their practice because of these educational interventions. In this Invited Commentary, the author argues that, although this finding is reassuring, it may be the right answer to the wrong question. The critical questions the profession faces are whether physicians have the humility to routinely sub

INTRODUCTION: Academic mentoring is essential for graduate students who are slow or medium achievers. Yet, the usefulness of the Formative Structured Oral Examination (FSOE) as a tool for academic mentoring has not been studied. This study aims to assess the utility of FSOE as a tool for fostering academic mentoring among slow and medium achievers.
METHODS: A convergent mixed-method study was conducted among 52 first-year MBBS students, covering three biochemistry topics with residents serving as resource persons. The study included both a quantitative single-group pre-post quasi-experimental

BACKGROUND: High staff turnover is a widespread issue across nearly all hospital departments, often exceeding 20% annually. This constant flux disrupts continuity of care and creates a recurring challenge: how to rapidly integrate new employees into complex clinical environments, both physically and functionally. Traditional onboarding methods struggle to meet this demand, particularly in services operating 24/7, such as emergency departments (EDs).
OBJECTIVE: This formative study presents the design and implementation of a web-based 3D gamified simulation platform aimed at improving staff on

We assessed the use of guided plasticity training to improve the outcome in the first 6 months after nerve repair. In a multicentre randomized controlled trial, 37 adults with median or ulnar nerve repair at the distal forearm were randomized to intervention, starting the first week after surgery with sensory and motor re-learning using mirror visual feedback and observation of touch, or to a control group with re-learning starting when reinnervation could be detected. The primary outcome at 3 and 6 months post-operatively was discriminative touch (shape texture identification test, part of th
