BACKGROUND CONTEXT: An accepted classification of spondylolysis exists. However, etiology remains controversial. There are several reports supporting acquired stress fractures in the etiology of this condition, although radiographic evidence of an acquired fracture in a given individual is very rare.
PURPOSE: To present evidence of development of pars defects during the teenage years.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective review of charts.
PATIENT SAMPLE: Two case studies.
METHODS: Charts and X-rays were reviewed to look for radiographic evidence of development of pars defects in patients wh

The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics, associated disorders, and the most common sites of stress fractures in rheumatological patients. Over a 3-year period, 35 patients with 44 stress fractures were prospectively recruited from an outpatient rheumatological department (32 postmenopausal women and three men aged 47 to 86 years, mean 70+/-10.6 years). Clinical diagnosis was established by compatible clinical and radiological data. In addition, previous skeletal fractures were recorded in all patients. Bone mass assessment was performed in 23 patients and spinal

Stress fractures in children are rare compared with the incidence in adults. This report describes an 11-year-old girl with stress fractures of the acromion, clavicle, and first rib on the left and contralateral fractures of the first and second ribs. It was eventually discovered that these fractures were caused by a nervous tic consisting of repetitive, vigorous shrugging and translation of the shoulders.

Stress fractures in athletes rarely involve the femoral neck. This report described the diagnosis and treatment of bilateral femoral neck stress fractures in a 30-year-old amenorrheic triathlete who is lactose intolerant and has a low caloric intake. The possibility of fatigue fracture should be considered in patients who have pain in the lower extremities that is exacerbated by activity, especially if they have hormonal or nutritional disorders.

Stress fractures are ubiquitary and most often caused by the subject's activities. In the past they occurred mostly in recruits, but today they are frequent in sportsmen. Stress fractures most frequently occur in the lower limbs, especially in the distal leg. We reviewed 32 injuries observed January, 1993, to June, 1995, and found that 25% of them had been misdiagnosed as stress fractures: in the cases where the diagnosis was correct, fatigue fractures (32%) were less frequent than insufficiency fractures (68%) and occurred in young subjects (mean age: 24 years), usually sportsmen (2/3 of case

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the morphologic appearance of sacral osteoporotic insufficiency fractures in MRI.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: 6 patients (5 female and one male, 54-80 years) with osteoporotic insufficiency fractures of the sacrum were examined with CT and MRI. Plain and contrast-enhanced T1- and T2-weighted spin-echo images were acquired, three patients were studied with T1-weighted gradient-echo-sequences with fat suppression.
RESULTS: Fracture-lines and sclerotic areas of the massae laterales were visible in 5 of 6 CT examinations, one patient showed no abnormalities of the sacrum on the i

Two teenage female athletes had low back pain that limited athletic activity. Radiographic examination was negative. A stress fracture of the ala of the sacrum was identified on bone scan and computed tomography (CT) scan. The lesions healed with rest. This unusual lesion has not been reported previously in the pediatric literature, but is probably more common than its lack of documentation suggests. Careful observation and evaluation of athletic individuals will enable identification of this lesion. Rest should allow fracture healing, followed by return to sports participation. Stress fractur

One hundred thirty-one patients with 169 stress fractures were treated between January 1984 and January 1990. The highest incidence was in teenage girls (25.5%), and the predominant sites were tibia (31.5%) and femur (12.5%). The mean interval between the start of hard training and the onset of symptoms was 2.7 months and the mean amount of increased activities was 93.7%. Volleyball (24.3%) and running (17.3%) had the majority of incidents, and 95 (72.5%) patients were professional athletes. Radionuclide bone scans were needed in 61 (46.6%) patients and 16 (12.2%) showed multiple lesions. Asym

To investigate whether stress fractures occurring in élite female athletes are related to reductions in bone mineral density (BMD), we measured BMD in nine athletes with such fractures and nine athletes without fractures who were matched for age, weight, height and sport. BMD was measured in three regions: upper limbs (distal radius), axial skeleton (lumbar spine) and lower limbs (femoral neck) by photon absorptiometry. The number of menses per year was significantly less (P less than 0.04) and the age of menarche was significantly delayed (mean +/- SD; 16.1 +/- 0.4 v. 14.4 +/- 1.5 years, P le

Three cases of stress fractures affecting the rigid spine of ankylosing spondylitis are reported. Even without the typical destructive features of the Romanus lesion, symptoms may be very prolonged and disabling and the diagnosis difficult. Internal fixation produces immediate pain relief and rapid fracture union.

An unusual fracture of the scaphoid occurred in an otherwise healthy young badminton player, caused by a violent movement of extension/flexion of the wrist while performing a smash. There was no direct blow or fall on the wrist, nor history of wrist pain prior to the fracture. No underlying pathology was identified. Conservative treatment failed and surgical stabilization was required to achieve bone union. The diagnosis of stress fracture was suggested. The characteristics of these uncommon fractures are reviewed.

Non-union of the ulnar diaphysis after isolated ulnar shaft fracture is uncommon. Complications due to non-union of the ulna must therefore be very rare. A case of a stress fracture of the radius in a postmenopausal woman following an isolated ulnar shaft fracture and non-union is presented. The mechanism of the stress fracture and propositions for preventing non-union of the ulnar shaft after an isolated fracture in the osteoporotic patient are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: A stress fracture is a painful condition which occurs when the adaptive ability of the bone is unbalanced. This imbalance predominantly occurs due to increased intensity, frequency, or duration of training. Identifying the etiology of stress fracture and its proper treatment prevents recurrence. Besides, evidence-based and supervised rehabilitation is indispensable for permanent remission of pain and return to sports to preinjury functional levels. The case series discusses the continuum of stress reaction to stress fracture in athletes, causes of stress fractures, their manageme

INTRODUCTION: Figure skating combines esthetic components with high impact, technically demanding elements requiring high volume repetitive training. The evidence base for the sport is limited, particularly regarding stress fracture injuries. This study aims to describe the prevalence and anatomical distribution of stress fracture injuries and assess for risk factors, as well as associations with acute fractures.
METHODS: An online anonymous retrospective survey of competitive figure skaters was distributed through social media networks and e-mail for completion by skaters from all three disc

Stress fractures of the foot and ankle are common injuries in athletes. Management differs considerably based on fracture location and predisposing factors. Repetitive loading of the foot and ankle in athletes should result in physiologic bone remodeling in accordance with Wolff's law. However, when there is not sufficient time for complete healing to occur before additional loads are incurred, this process can instead lead to stress fracture. Assessment of the athlete's training regimen and overall bone health is paramount to both the discovery and treatment of these injuries, although diagno

Isolated fractures of the trapezoid are an exceedingly rare injury, and stress fractures of the carpus are similarly uncommon. An 18-year-old competitive baseball player presented with atraumatic, progressive hand pain. He was found to have a stress fracture of the trapezoid. Symptoms resolved with rest and immobilization.
