Treatment of 49 year old male with frostbite of feet is presented. The treatment included reconstruction of plantar surfaces in the both feet. Necrotic tissues were excised seven weeks after the injury and the wounds were split skin grafted. Two staged reconstruction with free neurovascular radial forearm flaps was carried out 15 and 20 weeks after the frostbite. The both flaps healed without complications. The patient recovered touch sensibility in the flap skin after 6 months and than he was able to walk. He returned to his professional job. 12 years after the reconstruction the patient can

RATIONALE: Bilateral, weight-bearing heel defects after frostbite are difficult to reconstruct, and outcomes depend heavily on postoperative off-loading and patient cooperation. We report a limb-salvage strategy for severe bilateral foot frostbite that occurred during acute psychosis in a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 25-year-old man developed acute psychotic symptoms and walked barefoot in subzero conditions for about 12 hours, resulting in deep frostbite of both heels and multiple toes. During admission he had poor insight and repeatedly attempted weight bearing

BACKGROUND: Accidental hypothermia with severe frostbite is a rare combination of injuries with a high risk for long-term sequelae. There are widely accepted recommendations for the management of avalanche victims and for frostbite treatment, but no recommendation exists for the treatment of frostbite in severe hypothermic patients, specifically for the management of hypothermic avalanche victims presenting with frostbite.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a previously healthy, 53-year-old male skier who was critically buried by an avalanche at 2300 m of altitude at an ambient temperatu

Frostbite is a serious clinical condition in which delayed treatment usually results in irreversible tissue necrosis. Due to lack of effective therapeutic interventions, we have developed minoxidil-loaded chitosan (CH)-polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel (MH) to treat frostbite injury. RSM-CCD was used to optimize the independent variables in order to maximize the gel fraction, swelling index and in vitro drug permeation studies. The MH formulation was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The healing activity was evaluated in L9

Frostbite remains a common cold injury in military units operating in severe climates, yet the epidemiology and physiologic screening markers for vulnerable personnel are not fully characterized. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,250 male servicemen stationed in northern subarctic/alpine regions, combining a structured questionnaire with anthropometry (skinfolds), estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max; Bruce protocol), and a standardized hand/foot cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) protocol. Frostbite was reported by 688 participants (55.0%), predominantly first-degree; feet (78.1%) a

Cold injury or frostbite is a common medical condition that causes serious clinical complications including sensory abnormalities and chronic pain ultimately affecting overall well-being. Opioids are the first-choice drug for the treatment of frostbite-induced chronic pain; however, their notable side effects, including sedation, motor incoordination, respiratory depression, and drug addiction, present substantial obstacle to their clinical utility. To address this challenge, we have exploited peripheral mu-opioid receptors as potential target for the treatment of frostbite-induced chronic pai

Frostbite is common in high-altitude regions, where low oxygen levels and the cold climate aggravate wound hypoxia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, making frostbite lesions prone to becoming hard-to-heal wounds. Traditional hydrogel dressings remain unsatisfactory under such extreme conditions, as they lack freezing resistance, low-temperature adhesion, sustained oxygen release, and ROS-scavenging activity. Herein, we report a multifunctional hydrogel for the management of high-altitude frostbite wounds, formed from polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated CaO2 nanoparticles (CPO NPs), polyv

Frostbite injury refers to cold tissue injury which typically affects the peripheral areas of the body, and is associated with limb loss and high rates of morbidity. Historically, treatment options have been limited to supportive care, leading to suboptimal outcomes for affected patients. The pathophysiology of frostbite injury has been understood in recent years to share similarity with that of cold ischemia-reperfusion injury as seen in solid organ transplantation, of which mitochondria play an important contributing role. The present study investigated whether AP39, a novel mitochondria-tar

While much has been published on the efficacy and safety of systemic thrombolytics in the treatment of acute frostbite, there has been limited investigation into administration outside a tertiary care setting. Here, we present a single-center experience with remote initiation of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) at referring hospitals prior to transfer to a regional burn center. A modified Hennepin Quantification Score based on tissue involvement was used to determine eligibility for tPA and to quantify the severity of amputation. This is a retrospective review of patients with ac

The critical time window between the incidence of frostbite injury and the initiation of treatment in remote snowbound areas is a determining factor for an effective therapeutic response. It is an emergency condition and challenging to treat due to the poor vascularity of affected body parts, and it requires immediate action. In addition to cold trauma-induced tissue damage, the inflammatory mediators majorly contribute to pathologic aggravations. We have designed and evaluated a topical "nano-spray gel (NSG)" formulation, which is based on a combination of liposomal heparin sodium (Hp) and ib

INTRODUCTION: Cold weather injuries require prompt warm water immersion therapy, which proves to be a difficult task in the cold austere environment. Current guidelines recommend 104 °F water immersion, but producing and maintaining large volumes of warm water is challenging in sub-freezing temperatures. We describe a novel process of utilizing a sous vide immersion circulator to maintain warm fluids for immersion therapy and efficient fluid rewarming in a cold forward-deployed setting for the treatment of cold weather injuries in an effort to bridge the gap between current medical guidelines

Introduction: Frostbite in children is uncommon; however, when severe, it can be associated with amputation of digits. Frostbite protocols have been established for adults but not for children. This project outlines our experience with the use of a newly developed iloprost-driven protocol for managing frostbite in children. Methods: Motivated by a severe case of frostbite in a teenager, resulting in amputations of multiple digits, the adult Yukon Frostbite Protocol was modified for use in children. Key elements of the new Frostbite Management in Children Protocol include rewarming, iloprost in

INTRODUCTION: Frostbite is a traumatic injury of the tissues upon low temperature environment exposure, which is characterized by direct cell injury due to freezing-thawing followed by development of an acute inflammatory process. Severe frostbite can lead to necrosis of soft tissues and loss of a limb. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have a unique ability to modulate pathogenic immune response by secretion of paracrine factors, which suppress inflammation and mediate more efficient tissue regeneration. It should be noted that potential of stem cell therapy for frostbite injury treatment has

OBJECTIVE: Development of Frostbite healing hydrogel of Manuka honey and hyaluronic acid.
SIGNIFICANCE: Frostbite is a cold-induced ischemic vascular injury non-responsive to most of the wound healing products. Thrombus-induced ischemia is the main cause of frostbite-related necrosis. Hyaluronic acid is known to possess significant antithrombotic and wound healing activity. Moreover, Manuka Honey is also rich in flavonoids and polyphenols with potential antithrombotic activity. These two agents were together utilized to develop a frostbite healing formulation.
METHODS: In-silico antithrombot

Frostbite injury is a rare but severe injury especially when rescue triage is prolonged. We here report the case of a 19-year-old male patient with severe frostbite injuries requiring amputation of both distal forearms and both lower legs due to delayed admission to medical care. This case demonstrates that even mild ambient temperatures can cause deleterious injuries if the exposure time is long enough paralleling our knowledge of burn trauma. Immediate admission to medical care is, therefore, paramount and GPS-based automated accident collision notification systems would therefore be of grea

INTRODUCTION: Hypothermia and frostbite occur when there is a significant decrease in central and peripheral body temperature in individuals exposed to cold windy conditions, often at high altitude or in a mountain environment. Portable hyperbaric chambers increase the barometric pressure and thereby the partial pressure of oxygen inside the chamber, and their use is a well-known treatment for altitude illness. This study aims to show that a portable hyperbaric chamber could also be used to treat hypothermia and frostbite in the field, when rescue or descent is impossible or delayed.

In the Crimean War (1854-56), infamous for its high death rate from disease at 212 per thousand British troops annually - one third of which was due to cholera or dysentery - skin disease was common, accounting for 13% of all admissions and 4.2% of all deaths. Excluding typhus, skin disease caused 252 per thousand annual admissions and 8.8 per thousand annual deaths, with an overall case fatality of 3.4%. The commonest skin diseases were: localised cellulitis/abscess, ulcer, venereal disease, frostbite, scurvy, eruptive rashes and scabies. The biggest number of skin disease-related deaths were

Cold associated foot injuries, such as frostbite and trench foot (immersion foot) are relatively common in cold environments. The former is classified as a freezing cold injury, and the latter as a nonfreezing cold injury. Trench foot is sometimes misdiagnosed as frostbite, and rapid rewarming exacerbates the condition. This paper aims to help differentiate between frostbitten foot and trench foot. This study included patients with frostbitten foot or trench foot treated at our hospital between December 2005 and May 2023. The differences in sex, age, month of injury, conditions at the time of
